Hey, Desree glad to see you're back. I'm gonna try out those SW histograms right now. Thanks for introducing the colourlike filter and how to use it, this is great stuff!

EDIT: Wow, that's a lot of histograms! Any suggestions on the optimum combinations to use?

PaulIsDead2221 - Let me echo other people's thoughts that you consider doing a "Vintage Edit" of Star Wars, also. I know - you work at your own pace, you do your own things - but please at least consider it. It would be a shame to leave it out.

Could someone please post that histogram zip to yousendit or something else? I usually don't have problems with Rapidshare... but I was downloading something which I accidentally canceled and now Rapidshare won't let me download as it thinks I'm still downloading that file. I tried refreshing my router and whatnot... to no avail.

Please, someone help me out with the histogram goodness.

Thundercracker- unfortunately, at the moment, i have no suggestions for optimal usage. Truth be told i only rediscovered the histograms today. Just to compound matters, i`ve deleted my original scripts (annoying, since i`d written a script that put all different versions side by side for comparison). It`s getting a bit late here in england now, but what i`ll do is this; when i get home from work tomorrow, i`ll write up a quick batch of scripts to replicate the side by side comparison , so that people can a least see what each histogram does to each video and see which produces the desired effect for each scene, and i will post these into the "please help me with histograms" thread in the technical discussions board, since that seems the right place to continue this. I`ll also prat around with a few things that i want to try. The basic scripts will be posted tomorrow evening (english time), when i`ll probably have quite a few notes to go with them.

Thanks thundercracker.

Btw, can someone direct me to the post that details how to create histograms? I'd like to try something different. I want to create a histogram of the original 'The Matrix' DVD and use that to change the color on the regraded transfer from the boxset. Not to distribute or anything. Just to get a feel for working with these things. I figure this is the simplest one for me to attempt at the moment.

I imagine another interesting, albeit ambitious, thing to try would be to remove the color casts from lord of the rings using a number of bits and pieces around the place.

1) write out your avisynth script. I think you're supposed to crop off the letterboxing for all your scripts before you plan to write something, that's what I do anyway, I think the black gets in the way of the pallet or whatever. Might be wrong. So something like "crop(0, something, 0, something)"
2) input "writehistogram("matrx_orig.txt", 100)"
3) input "writepolarhistogram("matrixpolar_orig.txt", 100)"
4) save, play in mediaplayer or whatever and sit and wait a few minutes, once the video actually starts that means it's done, and in the same folder as your avisynth file you should have two txt files of the colors for the Matrix that you want. The value 100 means you're taking every 100th frame as a sample for your pallet.
5) do the same thing for the footage you want to regrade, but rename "writehistogram("matrix_crumby.txt", 100)" and writepolarhistogram("matrixpolar_crumby.txt", 100)
6) Then, probably in a new avisynth file (a copy of the footage you want to change without the "writehistogram/polarhistogram" functions in it), you toss in these values.

polarcolourlike("matrixpolar_crumby.txt", "matrixpolar_orig.txt")
colourlike("matrix_crumby.txt", "matrix_orig.txt")

Well I guess you already knew the sixth step, ah just making sure. Oh yeah, then re-add the cropped letterboxing with addborders(0, someting, 0, something). I think the cropping then re-adding keeps any added brightness from interfering with the letterboxing. Anyway, this is it in it's most simplest form.

Quick question. The Emperor scene. Gout or digital broadcast of the '97 SE?

Nah it's all from the GOUT, which is fine for darker scenes like the Emperor scene, but doesn't work well for Hoth scenes, lots of noise. What kind of broadcast is this? Where can I get it?

I didn't think to adjust the hue of these shots to get Vader's saber back to red. I was playing with the red levels of the image for so long, lol. I'm just worried about what's happening to Luke's saber in some shots, ah well at least it's still blue.

Whoo! Star Wars: Classic Edition today at 3:00! If I had time this morning I'd post the trailers I made for the hullabaloo before. Maybe tonight. God, so many people are going to show up, I'll tell you all how it went.

Good luck with the exhibition! I just hope Lucasfilm doesn't bring down the hammer - I've heard GL doesn't like the theatrical versions to be shown. If it all works, though, this might be the first confirmed time that it has been shown publicly in years.

I don't know a whole deal about it. I know OCP used it for his CE. It's a german broadcast of the 97 SE as far as I can remember, I'll seen the dvd's poster here, but i don't have them. That's all I know.

And yes do tell us how the screening went and the response it gets. Andy K has a good point. I'd be hilarious if Lucas' stormtrooper like goons show up and attempt to shut the screening down..... well not too funny for you.

Any way I hope it goes well.

Just so you know, I'm a close friend of PaulisDead.
Anyways, the showing went alright, not as well as we had hoped, but not bad. This is probably because most of the Seniors/Juniors have sports after school. I've talked to many of them and they said that they would have liked to go, but had to go to practice. So I'm thinking we might to a back-to-back showing for ESB.

Yeah a lot of people I talked to too. Jocks you know...go figure. I just don't know if I can sit through Empire twice in a row.

Updates:
-Isolated score is synced up.
-Empire is being shown next week instead of this week, and Jedi two weeks later, giving me three weeks to work on Jedi.

Sounds awesome. Neon Yoda, blue snow, and bad sabers are really starting to annoy me.

Quick question, did you restore the old Boba Fett voice and make other OCP-like changes...or are you just worried about color-correction for now?

I have a question. Did you leave in little things like composite fixes and matte line removal? Or is "laserdisc" footage used for them too?

This sounds like the BEST trilogy project yet on these boards. Hoping you do ANH as well!

P.S. If you want to make torrents of these, please make them dual layered.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I'd do both SL and DL torrents if you do torrents of these.

Although this is the ESB thread, when the inevitable ROTJ Vinatge Edit is done for your future screening.....

Though the color correction has garnered the most attention, this is definitely a "preservation/fanedit" trying to recreate the theatrical experience of ESB. I switched out the center channel of Morrison's voice with audio from the GOUT.

How did you build your isolated score?

Like most things in this project, it's stolen. I snagged the first laserdisc transfer I ever downloaded, my old ISOMIX trilogy and ripped the isoscore from there, and just adjusted it on my timeline to make sure it synced up the entire film. It only goes out of sync in the last optical wipe...I don't know why, it's fine up until then.

In general about the matte fixes, I left them alone cause they didn't bother me too bad. Of course when the OUT is released by Lucasfilm properly they better be there, but for now I didn't feel like losing quality over it. The rancor I'll just leave alone too. There would be so many shots to change, for instance pretty much any cockpit shot on Hoth, due to the transparency issue. The only time I switched out a matte fix change was when the digital compositing altered the sync of ships slightly:

http://www.starwars.com/episode-v/release/video/f20060901/20060901_picview/img/25.jpg

Unfortunately the "complete" list of changes on the Star Wars website, though the most complete of all change lists, isn't entirely complete. They leave out a couple redundancies, for instance, the third or forth time R2s dome is fixed from black to blue. I think I got them all, but we'll see.

I need one more encode for everything. I missed 3PO's added line in the freezing chamber. Plus my editing program is dropping in an extra frame where it shouldn't every now and then, all easily fixable. This weekend I think I can upload it to Demonoid, then start jumping onto Jedi. Thanks for the support, it's just about done.
