The TMP HD print looked to have been struck from an original positive. I found the transfer actually quite soft but would have been a standard print up for its day. I'm not really sure you would benefit too much from the HD print, unless you were viewing it on an HDTV or projector, maybe a little sharper, certainly you would see all the grain and scratches but not much more detail, if any. It certainly compressed well to dvd going by the bit allocation.
I cannot pass on what I had because as soon as that project finished I deleted the files.

RADiX

edit:

actually now that I think about it, there is more detail here and there, such as when spock is on his planet and you get close ups of his ?mothers? scarf/headdress whatever (can you tell I'm not really a big star trek fan yet?) theres certainly more detail in the headdress...

Making a 2 or 3-disc transfer from an HD source is a waste. The major loss is the resolution. DVD, well in the states anyway, is 720x480. HDTV stuff is mostly 720p or 1080i, IIRC. 1080 full resolution being something like 1920x1080.

No, that wasn't his mother ... :-)

You not being a Trekkie makes me thank you even more for this wonderful DVD. I've been waiting for something like this for so many years!

The reason why I asked for the HD files or a dual layer transfer is just that I'd like that movie preserved in the best quality possible. I don't know much about HD and DVD conversion, but movies normally need a dual layer disc, right? I'm just a little worried that by shrinking the movie so that it fits onto a single disc results in a certain loss in quality. Or did it just happen to fit onto a single disc without shrinking after you converted it from HD to DVD? This is all so confusing ...

Anyway, the DVD looks great ... it's such a big improvement over my old VHS tape! A shame that the DE is the only version officially available on DVD!

I think Faustus is still running a PIF chain in the UK. You can PM from his post earlier in this thread.

Or, if you have newsgroups, my upload will be on Giganews for a few more days.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

Download  shows from Cable DVR (Updated! Yes, it needs a rewrite, but it's worth slogging through, anyway).
