Well i'm pretty busy at the moment. I'm looking through my DVD collection to try and find some better explosions to use for the FX because some are so bleached they look really dated. I've narrowed it down to Episodes of Star Trek TNG, Voyager, Deep Space 9, Enterprise, Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and a few movies. Problem now is that's added up to about 150 discs with most having about 3 - 4 episodes on each to check through. I've got my work cut out for me but its something i have to do, so i will probably be a bit quieter on here for a while.

Wish me luck.

Hey Adywan,

You might try these for star trek episodes: http://www.amazon.com/STAR-TREKS-GREATEST-EXPLOSIONS/lm/1RQ1I7AJHL6LO

I figure starting with a list called "Star Trek's Greatest explosions" couldn't hurt

As for Star Trek stuff, are you just looking for Starship explosions in general or something specific? I have all of the Star Trek DVDs and could probably help you narrow the search a little bit.

Also, Detonation Films, and their counterpart, DetFilms HD, provide some free downloads of compositable explosions, plus a lot of additional footage for not very much money. It's legal to use, and shot for compositing (at full resolution), so you don't have to worry about isolating anything from your DVD sets.

Take care,

Great site. I couldn't find a link to send my resume, though.

Thanks for the links InvaderTim & Sojourn. I checked out the stock footage but unfortunately they have filmed the explosions at normal framerate and not used high speed cameras. They have used a slow motion technique in their footage that you have to pay to download which doesn't look as natural as using a high speed camera and suffers from frame mix blur. If they had used a high speed camera then they would have been perfect.

i have found a couple of explosions from Enterprise which are perfect but i still need a lot more. I'm mainly looking for any sort of explosions in space, the bigger the better.

I was looking at one of the free clips, and it seemed that they showed the explosion twice -- once at normal speed, the other using the slow-motion effect. Would the full-speed one still be useful, or no? And would it be worth it to buy their clips and not have to go through the hassle of extracting the explosions from your other DVDs (which I would assume would be a lot of masking, and something of a pain)? Their space explosions disc seems like it might have a lot on it for you, at a somewhat reasonable cost. Though if you're a really good masker of flame elements, then maybe it'll be better for you to get them from the DVDs. Oh, I don't know . . .

Take care,
Sojourn

I probably have an explosion library, I had to buy one for a job years ago - I'll take a look and see what I have (was Reel Explosions from memory as they were the least expensive I could find that had ready to comp mattes)

Hopefully, Adywan will have "explosive results!"
By the way, I strongly say that you should use a full length "Yes, I'll bet you have."

Well i've gone though about 50 episodes of star trek so far and found only 4 decent explosions, but still got a long way to go.

I have been doing the new Alderaan explosion scene but then on Tuesday night i recorded the last ever episode of Stargate SG1 and it had a perfect planet explosion. I've now decided to use that explosion with a little modification. It looks so amazing now. It has some camera shake and it really adds to the impact of its destruction now. but this has now caused me to go down a different route that i was originally going down for the explosion. Originally i was going to eliminate the energy wave from the explosion but after seeing this new effect it actually fits in much better. I know this is probably going to be a controversial decision but it just looks so great. I probably won't be including the energy wave in the Death Star explosion though. A planet the size of Alderaan probably would produce an energy wave like that but the Death Star is a lot smaller so the explosion wouldn't be as powerful, so no energy wave. Not only that but if the Death Star had produced an energy wave of the size it is in the SE then surely it would have effected Yavin IV and caused a lot of damage.

adywan, I completely support your decision to use the shock wave. Not to put down the original, but I watched the video posted by tellan recently of Alderran exploding, and something about the way Alderann explodes in the original just isn't realistic. It looks like I am watching something small explode not a planet. I just prefer the shockwave over the original. Also, the death star explosion should look different, because it isn't the size of Alderran and doesn't have the same composition as Alderran. I am glad you are doing it this way.

I remember looking at a star wars site that applied real world science to a lot of the aspects of the movies (i.e. the fall out from the second death star destruction causing a holocaust on endor) that could help you with finding a good looking explosion it might just help in general too. I have to search around and try to find it again though. Ill try to get post it up ASAP (unless another member knows what Im talking about)

Edit:...found it here

Here's something that talks about the yavin explosion that you mentioned

Didnt remember it was from TF.N so I dont know how much it means to members around here.

Thanks for the link GhostAlpha26. I have seen this site before a while ago and it does make some good reading.

The energy wave wouldn't really have been a problem in the Alderaan explosion because only the death star (which presumable had a pretty good energy shield) was nearby but Yavin IV would have been pretty hard hit if one was produced from the explosion of the death star so its definitely going in this edit.

The explosion shot is almost finished so i'm going to post the clip in a bit, probably got about another couple of hours of work left to do on it.

I have also decided not to add any extra shots, like the shots from the Enterprise episode mentioned earlier in the thread, or any surface shots of Alderaan. The destruction is going to be as quick as it is in the official releases because , originally when i intended to stretch out the destruction of Alderaan, i completely forgot about Obi-Wan's line straight after.
" I felt a great disturbance in the force... As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.."

This indicates to me that the Destruction of Alderaan was very quick and adding the extra shot, although it would have looked pretty cool, would make that line pretty incorrect. So they're all gone. And after all, i'm not making a Lucas special edition..

Congratulations on your promotion, adywan! Also, if you have room on a DL version of your edit will you include your expanded destruction of Alderran as an unused concept or deleted scene? I would love for it to be included with maybe some other abandoned concepts.

I am hoping to include extras like this on the disc.

These all sound like great ideas with the explosions. And it would be good to see the extended planet surface destruction in an extras bit on the dvd. Cool.

Well done. It goes by quickly but then it's supposed to. It seems like you're causing a lot of people to stop and stare rather than get on with their own work
