I tried my other DVD player. The subtitles show up there, too. So the problem is either my primary DVD player, or the combination of the player and the disc.

Time is running out for the Rebels. Antilles upcourt to Skywalker. He’s being paced by Darth Va— the bone-jarring pick by Solo! He came out of nowhere! Skywalker’s open from way outside, he launches at the buzzer... Good! It’s good! The Rebels win on a sensational buzzer beater by Luke Skywalker! Let’s take another look at that last shot. He just does get it off in time. Wow, what a shot. That’s why they call him Luke Legend.

That may be the most exciting battle I have ever been privileged to broadcast. Certainly the most dramatic finish. We’ll get you an update on the Artoo Detoo injury situation in just a moment. Right now let’s go courtside where SuperShadow is waiting with Chewbacca.

It didn't. It's evidently a glitch on my end.

Has anyone burned this yet? I attempted to with PgcEdit, but I was given a message saying that no cell was good for a layer-break. Wondering what other people have done to burn this.

I burned this as a DL and the layer change came as Luke, Han and Chewie were coming out of the elevator into the holdng cell. My player paused briefly but it does that a lot. I haven't tried it on another machine yet.

I'm still downloading this so I've seen about 75% of it, that being said what does everyone think of it?

What I'm particularly interested in is opinions on the transitions and wipes between the '04 dvd and the GOUT. Being that I'm no expert on the matter and there are far more experienced forumers here who after working on their own edits know the material inside out.

What do people think of the transition when Obi Wan and Luke are walking to the docking bay when in the SE's it cuts to Jabba? From the few fan edits of the '04 dvd I've seen, this part can be the most problematic. Is this done well in the CE v2.0?

From what I've seen it looks really good for an edit of the '04 dvd. I thought the Han/Greedo scene was to my eyes perfect. And I thought the Mos Eisley approach scenes were done well considering the source material.

I'm looking forward to sitting down and watching this all.

Wow. What a disappointment. I feel like I just wasted a DL-DVD.

Let me preface my comments by saying that I love every project that OCP has made for this forum. I love the Classic Edition series. I loved Star Wars: Classic Edition (Version 1).

That having been said, Version 2 is a mess. I went into it expecting a vast improvement over Version 1. I was wrong.

I don't know whether it is from his color correction process, or from his encoding, but the video is terrible. Every slightly dark area of the screen is swimming with what looks like the Wonka Bar from Willy Wonka that is being transmitted via television waves. Bear in mind, I am watching this on a low-definition television. I am certain that if I had a higher-quality TV, I would notice even more noise in the lighter areas. It is just terrible, particularly in space scenes.

Along those same lines, the opening title crawl is also really bad - stars flicker as (what I assume to be) the box containing the 2006 OUT crawl shrinks in size to match the crawl as it vanishes in the distance. In the transition between the crawl and pan down, there is a terrible crunchy bright starfield. When we see Tatooine and its moons, they are surrounded by a tacky glowing halo because the picture has been brightened using an apparently-not-very-good brightening process. Then, each laser shot has a similar fuzzy gray halo around it. Terrible.

Later, during the Death Star Assault, during the iconic fly-by near the towers, OCP apparently used the OUT for the first part of the shot, then switched to the SE after the X-Wings had passed out of view. When this happens, the starfield behind the tower explodes, new stars appearing, and all of the stars glowing way too big and bright. Stylistically, this just seems like a bad choice - why not wait for the shot to end before transitioning to a new source? Who knows? End result = bad.

I need to rewatch Version 1, but I don't remember the video quality being as bad as it looks in this version. Version 2 was supposed to be an improvement, but if it was, I REALLY need to rewatch Version 1, and then have my eyes checked. And I am not even a very picky or particularly sharp-eyed viewer - there are several laserdisc transfers that look better (in my eyes) than OCP's final encode of SW:CE.

I went into this expecting it to be at least equal to, if not better than, the sum of its parts. I was mistaken. I would not recommend this to anyone, really, except for completionists.

If you really want to see a reconstruction of the theatrical Star Wars, I would suggest marrying this audio mix (which is great) to an anamorphic conversion of the 2006 release - at least the video quality would be consistent (and in many cases, better).

OCP - if you ever do a third version of this, please use a different system for applying your filters, or for your encoding. Whatever you are using now doesn't work.

With all of this in mind, to think that OCP was selling a "no-frills" DL version of this edit for 10 bucks a pop is just horrendous.

Does the CE of ESB and ROTJ share these problems as well?

Could anyone else who's downloaded and viewed this corroborate this disappointing review?

As I only saw these movies in the form of self-encoded avis/ogms, ... Star Wars looked fine to me, ESB and ROTJ only problems I saw was slightly low-q OPEDs.

Yeah, more or less. The brightness was kicked up a lot rather than any overall color correction, so the result is some ridiculously grainy dancing blacks that's insanely distracting. Take a look (not resized for anamorphic squeeze):

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Well, I'm watching it currently on a 17" 4x3 CRT monitor, so I'll watch it at work on my 16x9 22" LCD monitor, maybe then I'll change my mind

Just turn the brightness down.

Has anyone made divx/xvid's of these yet? preferably 640x272 over 1GB each?

I torrented only one of them as I recall, but I made all 3...could prolly torrent them all again...

Star Wars - 1.1 GB, with commentary track (ogm), 836x352
Empire Strikes Back - 826 MB (!), no special features (avi), 852x352, +5.1 MB file with similar settings for Emperor scene redubbed
Return of the Jedi - 1.1 GB, no special features (avi), 836x352

I have to tweak the header of Return of the Jedi, sometimes perfectly valid mpeg-4 avis are rejected because the 4cc is FMP4 instead of XVID or DX50... I might also strip out the commentary track for Star Wars

strange resolutions there what made you go with those settings?

reason I always choose 640x272 as it is easier to upconvert to 1080p eg; 640 x 3 =1920, 272 x 3 =816.

obviously the vertical resolution is increased for 16:9 aspect etc. I also up the bitrate for the vertically higher aspects.

Also read somewhere that some MP4 standalone players only allow aspects divisable by a factor of 16 so I always try to stick to this rule when possible

still be interested in them if you ever reseed.

Forgive my ignorance just realised you were probably trying to keep the DVD's vertical resolution with your sizing.

I finally got the Demonoid torrent downloaded this evening, ran the folder over VLC (1024x768 laptop screen with 32bit resolution)....and boy, you aren't kidding. There was an obvious flickering in the starfield after the text crawl (annoying, but willing to forgive) -- but the graininess is horrible. The shot of Vader walking up the corridor after taking the door down; his black cape is just swimming in errant pixels. Followed by Leia loading the card into R2 (pixelation in dark shadows), then 3PO walking through a doorway -- lots and lots of dancing pixels in the flat blacks especially to the right.

What a shame.
