Six-Movie Star Wars Marathon at Celebration IV

1. Yes, I am sure the OT will be the SEs.

2. I am posting this info because I am sure this is going to tie in with the 30th Anniv. DVD releases. Regardless of the rumors as of late saying that we WON'T be getting them, I still think that we will...

The marathon is no surprise.

It is so ironic that they are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of SW by showing all 6 films, and the version that is 30 years old doesn't exist anymore! It should be a marathon of all 6 movies to commerorate the 10th Anniversary.

When I see crap like this (below), I dunno, I just don't see LFL letting this whole 30th Anniv. slip by without squeezing out every single cent....

I wonder what exactly they will be screening, and how? Will there be new prints made or high res digital projection from the digital masters, or will they simply be projecting the dvds, as is sometimes done? If they are from digital masters, i wonder if they will be any of the updated versions of the films, if such things are indeed coming. That would be quite the way to reveal them. Anyone who attends these screenings should be on the lookout for pink and green lightsabers in Star Wars--if theres not then these are brand new masters which will assumingly be made for an impending release. And if there are still pink and green lightsabers in Star Wars during a marathon screening organized by Lucasfilm for the 30th anniversary...then thats just dumb. But i guess it will go well with Greedo shooting first and Hayden Christenson in Return of the Jedi.

Yea, except the SE's 10th anniversary has already passed!

The posters shown on the website are from the '97 SE. The AFI in Silver Spring, MD has shown those prints as recently as the past couple years so those will probably be screened at this thing. This assumes of course that it isn't some sort of grand unveiling as you're suggesting.

I ordered a ticket to the event, but I'm not sure if I'm going to go because I already made plans to go to Universal Studios that day. I'd like to swing by and see the OT though so maybe we'll cut out early and head over there. My guess is that this will be a digital presentation of the films since Lucasfilm is directly involved. I wonder though if they would show the newest versions of the films even if they did have them ready.

They'll be showing the SEs, I'm sure. Which means that I don't care anyway. This is far from surprising. I just don't think that it's that big a deal even if you are an SE fan.

I get one of these at home every year without having to travel.

Lucas needs to make this worth peeps' while ... like showing extended prequels or the new CG Yoda in TPM or things like that. Or that O-OUT-GOUT thingie.

This nails it. Why should I go to CIV to watch all 6 films when I can watch them all anytime at home? Sure, they'll be on a large screen. But you can bet that it won't always be in a quiet room. Someone's cell phone will ring and they'll probably answer it, disturbing the environment for everyone. People will be coming and going (I doubt they'll close the room during showings) which will let light spill into the room every now and then.

In essence, CIV better have a lot more than that if they expect people to come. I probably wouldn't waste my time in that room anyway. That's 12 or so hours that you could be seeing the rest of the convention.

After reading the news item, I have only two words: Trilogy Tuesday. In case you don't know, Trilogy Tuesday was the day that the LOTR trilogy was played back to back in select theaters around the country. FOTR and TTT had their extended editions played, followed precisely at midnight by ROTK. Of course, that was the advantage of being at Trilogy Tuesday. Not only did we get to see all 3 movies back to back, but we got to see ROTK first. Star Wars fans were practically begging for something like this back when ROTK came out. It looks like it's finally being done, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

Personally it was tough sitting through 3 movies back to back (especially considering that the theatrical release of ROTK was over 3 hours long). I can't imagine sitting through 3 movies just to see the Star Wars Trilogy. I really hope Celebration isn't going to start immediately after this screening. Anyone that goes to this is going to be 1) exhausted from sitting in the same spot for 12+ hours and 2) stinky. They're going to need a shower and some sleep.

I think it would be fun and cool if this was done in a few select cities around the whole country, but this is just to limited. And I wouldn't exactly call it a "free" screening. Since you have to be registered for CIV, your admission to Celebration covers part of the cost.

I think I've become far to cynical when it comes to anything Star Wars these days. I would've been totally excited at just the idea of this a couple of years ago (before the GOUT was announced). Now, it's no more than "meh".

These will most likely just be digital projections of the DVD's, as they did at Celebration III. The damn things looked and sounded like shit in that auditorium thrown up on that screen that the projected image didn't even fit.

In any event, LFL can kiss my ass for puting this thing in LA. I went to the first three Celebrations and always loved the fact that they were centrally located. I think they have shot themselves in the foot judging by how many people are bitching about the location. I would LOVE to get a look at their pre-registrations compared to CII and CIII in Indy. (And by the way, I am not an Indy homer, I live in Nebraska. And I have been to LA a few times and can say that I think it is a HORRIBLE location for this event just on atmosphere alone.) Indy was awesome, as was Denver (though admittedly a little small for the event).

K... done bitching. And yeah, these will most likely just be projections of the DVD's as this was the same way they advertised the showings in Indy two years ago. As far as the Celebration, if anyone is going I would greatly appreciate setting up a purchase of the poster from the event. I have the first three posters and would like to complete the set. As for the event itself, I'll tune into the Spike TV coverage to see how it goes. I am sure they will be totally "respectful" of our fandom.

This is the first officially sanctioned Star Wars convention to be held in California since 1987. The previous celebrations were not centrally located to me. So give us poor west coast fans a break!
Would be nice if someone could hold an "unofficial" screening of the original film elsewhere in town.

Sorry, but a six episode marathon of SW with the PT and SE can only make me suicidal now.
It should just be the OOT, leave it at that, and move on.

Just for the record, Trilogy Tuesday culminated with a premiere screening of Return of the King at 10 pm. Return of the King had a midnight show for everyone else.

Celebration 1 was not centrally located, not by any means. Granted Indy was more centrally located (by population, not by geography) it was still out of reach for most people on the west coast.

How is LA a more horrible location than Indy? Indy was small. For C2, someone had the brilliant idea that they wouldn't need the whole convention center (half was taken up by some marathon). For C3, even with the whole convention center, it was still nuts, with lines everywhere. From what I heard (I volunteered, so I didn't have to experience any of this) it was WORSE at C3 than it was at C2, just to get in the door, nevermind getting into the store.

As for the atmosphere in LA, what's wrong with it? Universal Studios is fairly close by, as is Disneyland and Knott's. A lot of people are flying in for the whole week just so they can go to the theme parks while they're in town. All Indy had was a downtown district and some movie theaters. As far as I know, no one went to the baseball stadium to see any games (assuming there were any games while it was going on).

Denver was not only small, but it was almost entirely outdoors, which ruined the experience for a lot of fans and a lot of dealers. It rained for 2.5 days! C1 was 3 days long! Standing out in the cold rain, trying to keep dry was anything but awesome. Yeah, it was cool to see that many star wars fans in one spot, but other than that, it was probably the worst experience I've ever had at a convention. It took them 3 days to realize they needed separate lines for all the celebs that were appearing in each tent. About the only thing, as far as I remember, that they did right was the store. I don't remember there being a long line and I know I didn't get up at the butt crack of dawn to get there.

The Celebrations, IMHO, have been nothing but successive failures. Sure, each one gets more and more fans, but each one seems to have worse crowd problems than the last with no one doing anything to help it. At C2, they fixed the outdoor problem (it was indoors). At C3, they claimed that having the whole center would fix the crowd problem. Oopsy, that didn't work, mostly because the crowd problem comes from the store. At C4, the store will be open 24/7, which will hopefully alleviate the crowds. I don't plan on going for more than 1 day though, so it doesn't really matter.

It's kind of funny. I had been very vocal about getting Celebration in LA and now I'm only going for maybe 1 day (I want all days at C1-3). Of course, if it didn't cost so blasted much to go, I'd get a ticket for all days and plan on going. As it is, I've been really put off by the cost alone.

Well, enough ranting from me. I just get tired of hearing how LA sucks and it should stay in Indy (which, even with the expansion, was not big enough). I'm willing to bet just as many people bitched about Indy for C1 and C2 as are bitching about it being in LA. People came from all over the world to go to Indy, they'll do the same to go to LA.

Sure, LA is not centrally located - in the United States. But really when you think about how many people come from other countries, it makes a lot more sense to have it in a city that is easier to get to from an international standpoint.

If pre-registration sales are down compared to C3, it isn't because of the location. It's because there isn't a new Star Wars movie coming out. The first three Celebrations happened right before the theatrical premieres of each prequel. C2 easily had many more attendees than C1, and C3 had close to twice as many as C2. (And that is why your lines to get into C3 were so bad lj. It's hard to get 40,000+ people into a convention smoothly when people start lining up hours before the doors open. I had a volunteer badge, so I just walked right in. ) C2's lines were horrible (my friend waited in line for 8 hours to get Carrie Fisher's autograph). But aside from the store line, C3 really wasn't that bad.
