What do you mean? They're not adding in scenes that never should have been in there or making the Gorn shoot first. They're just converting it to HD and sprucing up the special effects to make it easier for repeated viewings. Besides, the originals are still out there so I don't see the problem.

Those look MUCH better than what I saw. And in widescreen? Interesting.

So how do ya'll think this Star Trek Preservation should go about? Divide everything by series? That makes since at first, but there is so much out there on TOS (and TNG) that it wouldn't be very balanced. And frankly, I wouldn't be that interested in a Voyager-only disc.

I agree by going series by series, then movies, then games and others (TV specials etc).

What i'd love to see again are the STAR TREK NIGHT thoings from 1996 bbc2.

How do we preserve things ?

Lots of people are saying they have stuff. Do we send each other copies ?

My main interest is the Kirk Movies era. I'd love the stuff from Klingon Academy. I have a copy of the Powergen Ad...not from youtube or the DivX compressed version, but not perfect I wish it was higher quality. I hope someone will drop me a line about Klingon Academy filmed scenes.

Check the official site. While they're not adding new scenes, they're doing far more than the originally stated cleaning up. Adding ships that weren't there, modding the looks of others, changing the entire composition of some shots. They're doing far more than sprucing up. It's not George's yet, but they look like they're getting there. I hope I'm wrong.

Pretty big changes there.

As for the problem, firstly, they claimed they were just redoing the shots digitally, when they're doing more than that. Second, while it's true they aren't officially suplanting the originals, which version do you think's getting the HD release first?

EDIT: Though this is heartening.
http://trekmovie.com/2006/10/25/cbs-is-future-proofing-original-star-trek/#more-269

You can see more comparison shots there. Good to know that they are doing HD versions sans CG. Though it begs the question of why are they doing it then? I thought that was the stated reason. It seems it's simply a marketing gimmick.

I'd still take cheesey models over cheessy CGI (a lot of the new shots look about par for a video game, though others blend well). At least then we know we're looking at dated effects, and not average to subpar "we luvs CG!!" ones. I can understand doing it to keep the whole thing in HD, but this is getting a tad too revisionist. At least they changed the model, so it looks a bit more like the real Enterprise.

Granted, I did like the redone TMP, but that was overseen by the director, and 99 percent of the new effects were based off of the original effects storyboards. In the case of TOS, they've flat out said in inteviews that they'll change anything that "looks bad" time permitting. Looks of little unneeded "fixes". The Gorn blinking, agonizer lightning, a new chronologer. I'm all for adding a beam where they accidently wasn't one, but this stuff...

Interesting enough, I watched a TV Land marathon last night, and thought the video looked as good as the supposed restored version. I'm sure the difference is more obvious in HD, but SD, I couldn't see much of anything. I'm not even sure what channel it airs on here. I've had to download them (watched Balance of Terror side by side for a few minutes).

I got a few amusing bits from the marathon for the project. They're in EP though (I had limited tape).

Those bloopers look like the ones I have. I know I have the TNG one.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went back to clip the audio--- and it wasn't there... I don't get it... There is a Grammer-live voice earlier, aknowledging when the Defiant and Bozeman are ordered to fall back to position 3, but that's audible on the DVD. I've can't think of any other version it could've been on. I thought that VLC was playing tricks, so I ripped the audio to 6 wav files - nothing. PowerDvd started playing the DVD from the point I had been comparing to the HD... so I know I didn't swap places with a counterpart from a different timeline...

Maybe Paramont broke in and replaced the disc?

Anyway, I don't want to be the source of misinformation. So it's better to retract it than delete it.

Captain Bateson's voice is on every release I know of. The story goes that Kelsey Grammer phoned in his lines for FC because he was a huge fan of Star Trek.

Maybe it's slightly off-topic, but what about preseerving "The Star Trek Saga : From One Generation To The Next" ?
Or what about the original pilot movie of Star Trek called "The Cage" ?
The original pilot movie was NEVER released, according to what I found on some other website

From Bill Williams:

Hi Andy,

I have some comments on your review of Star Trek: Season 3, pertaining to "The Cage". You shared that both versions of "The Cage" are on the new DVD set. There are actually three different versions that have been released to home video, all of them with varying episode labels, along with a fourth unreleased variant. Allow me to explain:

The first version is the original hybrid version that was released on VHS in 1986 as "Episode 1". This is the same version that has appeared on both Vol. 40 of the single-disc releases in 2001, and on this new DVD set, as "Episode 99", containing as much of the color footage that was used in the 2-parter "The Menagerie", black and white footage from Gene Roddenberry's workprint version of "The Cage", and the wraparound commentary from Roddenberry on the ST movie sets. On the S3 set, this version is presented in a 2.0 mono mix.

The second version is actually the first full-color version that appeared to the public on October 4, 1988 as part of the syndicated TV special "The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation to the Next" (with 30 minutes of wrap-around interview segments with the Original Series and TNG casts). This full-color version was later released on VHS and LD in 1989 as "Episode 99". This version has the same 2.0 mono audio track as the original hybrid version, and some of the restored color sequences were electronically slowed to account for missing gaps of footage that have, unfortunately, been lost forever. This second version remains unreleased to date. Rumors surfaced during the 90's that the color footage was in fact computer colorized, but the footage is too precise in its color balancing and tinting to be computer coloring.

The third version is the recent restored version that first surfaced on the Vol. 40 DVD in 2001 and on the new DVD set. This version is labeled "Episode 1" and has the erroneous first broadcast date of October 15, 1988 on Disc 7 of the set. The major differences with this "Episode 1" and the 1988-89 version are a more balanced resequencing of the restored color footage, the digitally enhanced 5.1 mix, an additional 2.0 mix (this is only available on the S3 set), the digitally enhanced voices of the Talosians, and a better musical sound mix restoring nearly all of Alexander Courage's original score. In the case of the latter, one piece of music underscoring Pike and Vina on Rigel VII is NOT the original Courage score, but rather a re-scoring from a later date. If you listen carefully to this section of music in both DVD versions, you will notice some substantial differences in its performances, though the music is similar. Also, listen to the digitally enhanced voices of the Talosians in the restored footage. You can make out some very distinct sound hisses in the audio mix. Finally, to account for the restored color footage, some 5-6 second of footage has been trimmed from the overall re-edit.

Even with all of this restored footage, digital enhancing, and resequencing to the 1988- 89 VHS and 2001 DVD versions, there are still approximately 30 seconds of footage that unfortunately have been lost forever. The sad case behind it is, when it was decided to fold "The Cage" into the series' 2-parter "The Menagerie", Gene Roddenberry loaned out his only color master to the film editors, with the belief that they would make a duplicate print for editing purposes and return the original to him. The film editors, however, thought that Roddenberry had given him a duplicate print to begin with and went to work in editing the necessary footage for the 2-parter. Imagine the s--t that hit the fan as a result of this miscommunication!

This leads to a fourth, unreleased version, and that is Roddenberry's black and white workprint version of "The Cage". This one looks and sounds rougher in places, as Roddenberry had taken it to science fiction conventions over the years and showed it to fans. If you look at the 1986 VHS version ("Episode 99" on the DVDs), you'll notice portions of the black and white footage that is present only in that version and not in other versions. Some die-hard Trek fans have wanted to see this black and white workprint version released in an official capacity, but to this day it remains unreleased. (Of course, there is the case of the unreleased alternate version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before", but that is a story for another day.)

In addition, very rare outtakes from "The Cage", showing production occurring as late as December 15-18, 1964, have not been seen by a lot of people - except for those who saw the E! documentary on the life of Jeffrey Hunter. When StarTrek.com commented on the production of "The Cage" and referenced the Justman/Solow book "Inside Star Trek", I forwarded the editor a .wav file of the "Cage" outtakes as documentation, and the article has since been updated and clarified with this information.

While the restored 2001 DVD version of "The Cage" is not the original version as Roddenberry had originally filmed, it does remain as close as possible to what Roddenberry had intended and stands to this day as close to the original version that can be achieved. Hope this helps!

Hmmm ... So which version was on the UK VHS re-release in the late 90ies? It's full colour, and I assumed that it was the same version as the DVD version from the Season 3 box set. Or isn't it?

I think the colour pilot has been available here in the UK for some time, and has even been broadcast on TV as a special programme.

I'm still interested in the cut scenes from Starfleet Academy and Klingon Academy if anyone managed to extract them and save them as video files ?

Christ, I wish I had known about this forum a while back. I used to have a whole boatload of commercials and clips for all the different series. I went around just scouting sites looking for commercials, as well as using Kazaa. There was one early promo for the show Enterprise that referred to Spock as a different military grade, and I had a whole bunch of other UPN clips as well. There's a site somewhere (maybe I'll remember the name later) where every single promo from the first three or four years of Voyager are posted, network broadcast info and all. There's also the Generations deleted scenes, which were actually really funny (Scotty and Bones looking up as a wine bottle rockets through the air to crash on the ground in the aborted alternate beginning is a good one). If I can, I'll check around to see if I can find some stuff.

I think, THINK, I can get some of the bonus materials that came on the store-exclusive discs (as they're on another torrent site), but I'll check back in tomorrow to tell you folks what I can find.

No need to go crazy-nuts on those. I have all of them, as does everyone in the world who bought the TNG and/or DS9 on region 2 or 4. All those extra-extras were on them as standard.

But I'd like to hear where to find the TOS, Voyager, and Enterprise bonus discs (without exact links, of course, just the tracker).

And I hope there's good news on all the rest of that stuff.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

What I would love to have in DVD quality are the DS9 episodes "To The Death" and "Sons And Daughters" from the R1 discs. The R2 versions of those two episodes are cut, and I'd love to have them uncut and complete. But I really don't want to buy two box sets just to have two episodes.

Well, I found the site I was looking for (Trekpulse.com), but it got shut down by Paramount about a year ago. That's a shame. I will keep checking around.

Nothing. The listings are a dead zone, although I did find some sites with interviews, as well as one with most of the trailers of all the series.

I rediscovered my off-air copy of "The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation to the Next" last night. It's missing the opening and closing credits though. (I also found Gene Roddenberry's obituary from Entertainment Tonight on another tape.) It was released on Laserdisc in Japan as part of one of the massive original series season box sets. The other tv specials came out in Japan as well.

i just downloaded the 25th anniversary special of star trek as an avi file off of demonoid that appears to be sourced from the 1992 vhs tape of the 1991 tv special.

those of you who want it may want to grab it while there are still some seeders.

hopefully someday someone will produce a better copy from the superior picture and sound of the laserdisc, on a dvd.

until then this is the best you are going to get i would rate the video a 5 out of ten and the audio a 4.

what do you want to expect out of a vhs rip that is less than a gig anyway, LOL

now all i need if for someone to preserve the star trek memories vhs by shatner on dvd since paramount has no intention of doing so.

too bad that happens to be one of the documentaries not released on laserdisc.

leonard nimoys star trek memories also need to be preserved. the youtube quality ones suck. then there are the lost interviews from star trek II. also the smithsonian institution video of the star trek exhibition, as well as the interviews with shatner and nimoy from the sci fi channel special edition of the original series.

some further deleted scenes from trek II have surfaced from a press kit those should be put in a dvd preservation somewhere.

Did this potential project ever get any legs under it? I would love to see as much unreleased and/or rare material relating to the original Star Trek as possible get preserved, because (a) its an important show in the history of the medium, (b) the further in time we get, the more likely some of that stuff is to just disappear, and (c) I love the show.  I'm kind of surprised by how much Paramount and CBS Television aren't doing to properly document such a landmark piece of entertainment. And as this thread has illustrated, there's a wealth of material out there worth preserving, from bloopers and EPKs and specials and interviews to the Sci-Fi Channel segments and trailers and TV spots and that didn't make it onto the released DVDs. I have a fair amount of material on various and sundry formats, but sadly I'm far too inept, untalented, and ill-equipped to do the work myself. Maybe I just don't know where to look for it, but I'm kind of surprised that - given how legendarily devoted Star Trek fans are - there isn't more of that kind of stuff out there, especially given that everything Star Wars-related seems to have been wonderfully preserved and widely disseminated. I have to confess, I'm envious.

I think the biggest problem with a project like this will be the quality of the results - a majority of the stuff with be 2nd generation or older VHS so the quality of the video is going to be bad.  even stuff taken from an original tape will be lacking compared to modern stuff.  having said that, i think a lot of this stuff should be preserved in the best way possible.  I know myself, i saw Nimoy's Star Trek Memories on tv a lot as a kid but no one seems to show it now.  i didn't notice it (could just be me) but did anyone mention the Making of DS9 tape that paramount put out with Terry Farrell hosting?  very interesting on Paramounts part but that was back when they actually did stuff with Star Trek.
