I'm guessing you've tried before? It is nearly impossible to deal with.

So little is on the album and the film is filled with horrid edits and tracked music. Not to mention, even the video games have very little material.

On top of that, there was some strange mixing gong on... it's all very bright...too bright. there is soo much hiss for a digital recording. It's rather sad.

The lesson is: never let your sound designer be your film's editor. And for heaven's sake get him out of pre-viz.

The problem with Ben Burtt is that he believes sound effects can instill emotions in a person more than music. Music is a serious emotional stimulate, but he refuses to believe it. Look at him in the "In a Minute" doco ( or what ever it is called ) on the ROTS DVD, he gets in an argument with one of the sound mixers. All because he thought that when Obi-Wan and Anikan are fighting and that big metal arm thing they are on plummets into the lava river below, he thought that you should here more sound effects than John Wlliam's score. He actually pouted when he didn't get it exactly like he wanted it. He almost made that scene worse than it was. I wonder how many other times he ruined scenes emotionally that could have been fantastic had he not tracked music over John William's score?

if you get corrupted files, its not because the file is actually corrupted. Try downloading again. I also should warn hat if you're trying to download things with third party programs rather than simply right clicking and downloading, It doesn't always work and you will get corrupted files.

Heh... if you were on JWFan.net, they'd kill you for that "one of the other sound mixers."

That happens to be Kenneth Wannberg. He was supervisor of the music mixing of nearly every (if not every) John William's film since 'Tom Sawyer'...and including the OT.

lol... so you'd have to imagine he has quite a bias when it comes to this sort of thing.

It is kinda sad that he feels that way, but you do have to remember, Star Wars is the reason we have surround sound these days. Fantasia-sound was too expensive, although it was the forefather of it... Star Wars really made it worth-while for theatres t have and films to utilize so I'd imagine there is some sense of Pride in that as well for Ben Burtt although, in all fairness, I feel the sound design/editing to the star wars is below par.

Yes, he won an award. Yes he made the lightsaber sounds ... wopdie shit. lol

But if you listen to just one channel.. like... say the center channel on ANH... say... when Luke asks his uncle owen if he can "go to the academy this year." The edits between both takes and live vs re-record, not to mention Aunt Beru's voice... it's sooo obvious.

And the Rancor sound from ROTJ... it's an elephant. They didn't even BOTHER to change the sound. It's just a normal elephant sound.

and there are a dozen examples of this where it's like they didn't try...

Oh well...

Anyways!

I think that Burtt ended up with too much power over the sound mixes and has since ruined even the OT with his so called "better" mix for the 2004 DVDs. How the hell can he justify having the music for the surround channels opposite to the front channels? This destroys the spacial field of the music so it makes you wonder if he has a grudge against a musical score in movies Plus it does make you wonder if the prequels would have been better if Burtt had just stuck to sound design though

GoodMusician, i have just downloaded your files and i must say you have done a great job. I can't wait for your ROTJ to appear.

Hang on... You mean to tell me that the rear channels are flipped?!

As for the music... I hate how they remixed it.

Look at when the X-wings fly into the Death Star trench... what happened to the fanfare there? What? Ben Burtt dialed it out almost completely? WTF?

And Don't get me started with Episode II

Oh well... I responded to the PM's ...thanks for the support guys!

GM, I also have experienced corruption with this track within this file, which I have downloaded a total of four times now. Is there any chance that this one didn't get cleaned up the other day? Or, is it perhaps something that certain archivers perceive as corrupt? I've used Newztools and WinRAR.

so it would seem that I was wrong. Disc 4 does have aproblem.I'm guessing that no one's really mentioned it except you two because it's the last track of disc 4 but thats ok lol

I wouldn't recommend any programs to download except right clicking and downloading. I have been asked before if there were corrupt files and there weren't and it was because the program had messed them up.

I use Winrar also to unload the files. By the time you all read this, the new disc 4 will be uploaded. I'll see about uploding the file separeately as well.

If anyone has further trouble, let me know.

Rather than Redownload the whole disc for one track, heres the track:

No, not my work, and by no means representative of what the edit I'm doing is.

For example, "Old Friends" is released in a video game... that's really an album comparison to the music as used in the film.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Nice to know people appreciate the work heh...

Again, if you have any questions or comments or if you have other problems, let me know.

GM, this is an ambitious (and way cool) project. Do you have a detailed list of the source(s) for each cue?

Here's a little present for you:
Dagobah

I ripped and worked with the "Exile to Dagobah" deleted scene, and by transitioning back and forth between your "Yoda Farewell" track and this one, I was able to get it pretty well FX free. It's the same cue, and is well-placed before [EDIT:] "Padme's Funeral."

Enjoy!

Cool edit. I notice you didn't include all the music... you only included wht was in the deleted scene. You say it was the same cue as Padme's Funeral... are you sure about this?

Sorry, what I said was probably a little confusing. I meant it was the same cue as Yoda's Farewell (though apparently there are some differences with what music leads into it) but it should be placed before Padme's Funeral in the order.

I hope you take on Ep II. I tried this exercise once and was daunted, lazy, or perhaps simply otherwise involved in a re-edit ... probably a combination of all three. The guide at JWFan.net looked promising and I started to download the various source bits from somebody's server, but just didn't follow through. I'd bet you could do it though. The bits are certainly out there.

Ep. II would be great, but I know how hard it is because I've tried myself. In many cases there is so much voice/FX bleed that I couldn't use the original music tracks.

Listening to your Ep. III soundtrack, I'm really impressed by how much of the music is "clean", considering that only an album's worth was released (besides games and so forth). My favorite cue in this movie is "The Death of Dooku II". The creepy counterpoint as Palpatine "comforts" Anakin gets me every time

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side

almost reminicient of War of the Worlds heh...

As for the Yoda's landing on Dagobah, I'm glad you said it was before the funeral... I had trouble figuring out where it was meant to be...

Anywhere else and it would disturb the flow of the film.

As for Episode II... it is a very daunting task. So much is edited and so little is released. I can't release anything that will be very clean or listenable or even enjoyable... it's just a very hard thing to find the balance on especially with how difficult and easily displeased people are with fan-edits. I always try to present the best... better than anything released... thurough, complete, clean, listenable, and have tons of extras.

Episode II really doesn't allow for much of that... I'm trying my best.. but it's hard to make any promises. Even the album was a poor transfer considering the amount of hiss there is on a "digital recording"...

I'll keep you up to date.

There are a lot of people on JWfan that have made fan edits of AOTC. There supposedly is a good deal of music in the video games.
Author
Time
I'm aware of what is available and I can say there is not a great deal available from the video games.

And what edits I've seen done on JWFan have all been based almost predomnanately in the album, with a little extra... there are some scenes that rip clean but predominantely, there is little to be had all around.
