George Lucas On the Future of Star Wars

Lucas on whether we'll ever see Episode VIII.
by Eric Goldman

US, March 5, 2007 - This past weekend, George Lucas was honored at the Museum of Television and Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival. Fittingly, the conversation was mostly about Lucas's television work, both past and present, including The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the two upcoming Star Wars oriented television series he is developing. However, Lucas also touched upon his future film work, including whether there might be any more Star Wars movies.

Lucas called them "the mysterious other Star Wars movies," referring to ongoing fan speculation on whether there might ever be an Episode VII, VIII and IX. Lucas said comments he made long ago were misconstrued as absolute statements, explaining that when he first was making the Star Wars films and was asked about future sequels, he had remarked, off the cuff, "Maybe we'll do another when the actors are all 80." However, the writer/director than laughed and added that, "What I didn't realize is, I'll be 80." Lucas noted that future Star Wars movies were, "An idea that seemed amusing at the time, but doesn't seem realistic now."

As for what films he will be working on, Lucas said that he'd been trying to get Indiana Jones 4 and Red Tails made for years, but is now, "Just about to get them finished." Indiana Jones 4 goes into production soon for a May 2008 release, but Lucas's comments seem to hint there will be an announcement in the not too distant future about the long in development Red Tails, which focuses on the Tuskegee Airmen -- African-American pilots who fought in World War II.

Lucas spent much of the time during this appearance explaining the difficulties he sees in the film business, and why he will be focusing more on television in the future, which he thinks is more "fun." Regarding his oft-mentioned "little, experimental" films he wishes to make, he reiterated his desire to do just that, but added these projects, "Might not make it into theaters."

It's much easier to refute things were ever said or put it down to misinterpretation, but it was never hard to simply state the truth that more movies were considered post ROTJ but now the idea of making them has lost its appeal. Kudos for setting the record straight......... for now.

Well, the way Lucas ruined all our expactations of the PT in six short years, would anyone want him to make episodes 7,8, and 9?

Given the amount of money the prequels made, I'd say that, sadly, more SW would make a ton of money.

He flat out said in a tape recorded interview with the official ESB publicist, (who wrote the official making of book) on the set back in '79 that he had written treatments on all NINE films. How does one misconstrue that?
When he actually makes one of those experimental films he's been talking about for over 25 years, I'll probably faint from shock!

Where were you in '77?

yaeh, I doubt that he had written the treatments for the PT, because they seem to be some awful sci-fi series somehow grafted onto the SW moniker

Poor guy, he is like that compulsive liar we all knew as a kid. He is always telling you he has these super cool idems, but something always comes up which prevents you from laying eyes on them. Everytime you say, "Oh, I would love to have that game" they tell you they have it, when you say wow, I want to see it, they say sure, next time you come over. Inevitably the next time you go to their house they will say their older brother lost it or something equally lame.

George Lucas reminds me of an adult version of this. "So do you plan on any more sequels?"
"Yes, I have a treatment written for a nine episode saga"
"You misunderstood me, I only ever intended to do six film, three really good one and three really crappy ones."
"So, about those original movies, you know the ones that are not the special editions?"
"Oh, those, I am sorry my brother lost them so they don't exist anymore."
"I see those original films are on DVD now, I thought you lost them?"
"Oh, yeah I found them, but this LD is the best quality they will ever be in, but nobody wants them anyway. They suck. LD quality is plenty for people who like to watch films with crappy quality 70s special effects. Those kind of people don't really have eyes."

"Did I say 9? I meant 6, but I'm going to retread the Clone Wars microseries and make a TV seies based on the stuff that should be in the PT"

Why not just rename Lucasfilm the Star Wars company? Its exactly as if Coppola kept making Godfather sequels or Spielberg making an extensive franchise out of ET.

Does writing treatments for further episodes mean that they are promises of being produced? I wish it were that way, then I would get Nightbreed 2, Lost boys 2, and about 10 more superman movies.

I'd rather want to see "Red Tails" being done than "IJ4".

And if the new "TV live action SW series" is to original "SW" as "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" to "IJ" trilogy, then....

...I may still find Star Trek series more enjoyable than the new "SW-on-TV".

Wait. I wanted this to sound a bit funny... but why am I not laughing at all?
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

It probably will. It's already happened to me.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Here's one fan who will not become a star trek fan just because the SW franchise has been killed. I'll just focus on Dune and LOTR for a while.

NO. I'm clinging to the past.

I agree. With or without Lucas, the supposed "sequel trilogy" is DOA

Is it just me or does anyone feel the original Yub Nub was more fitting for the end of a movie with more sequels planned and the Victory Celebration made Jedi feel more like the end of the saga. Do you think that's why it was changed in '97, to give Jedi more finality? Still, by making Leia "the other" and having the emporer die, Lucas already knew (by '83) there would be no episode 7?

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

According to Kershner's comments, he knew while he was directing Empire back in '79 and '80 that it was the second act of a three act play. Then again, this could simply be interpreted to mean just the play itself (IV-VI) and not the other plays (I-III and VII-IX).
