I'm thinking of somehow creating a "Cobbler in a Box" that would take everything ocp has put out and convert it all to MP4 video so it could fit onto two DVD-Rs via a torrent zip file.

I was a bit annoyed to find out that Google Video doesn't let you download the original MP4 videos I uploaded, but rather downscaled and re-compressed versions of those. All this time, I assumed they let you download the originals. This is purely aimed towards those who want to view it on a computer (or iPod/PSP), but very high quality.

Heh, now you know why I asked you for those materials from your "alternative recobbled cut" edit a while back. I want to make my own cut for personal use, combining what I see as the best elements from your cut and Garret's. I certainly wish that I could just download them from Google. Could you possibly break the files up into sections and put them up for download at some download websites? Many of those sites allow up to 300mb files.

I just don't trust torrents, sorry - the process is very slow for me and it seems that it's like opening your computer up to malicious software. It seems safer to download something from just one website.

I'm not very hot about torrents, either, but they're a bit more practical than the download websites. You're safe as long as you have good protection on your computer, anyways. However, I'll see what I can do... but you know that the eMule workprint alone is 850 MB and suffers from a lot of compression issues.


By the way, I found some nice Nasruddin resource on Wikipedia. A lot of these stories are really funny!

I am de-lurking for two reasons. One is to offer my profound thanks to all of you who made the restoration of this film possible. From the first frame of footage I ever saw (a trailer attached to some Disney VHS) I knew this was something special. When I finally got to see the film on VHS a few years later, I unfortunately saw that it was obviously, and seemingly hopelessly, compromised (it seems too polite a choice of words). There were hints of its original glory buried within, but as a film it was all but unwatchable. As the internet rose to prominence, I followed the (lack of) progress made in getting the original version made available to the public. And then I stumbled across this website via the magic of Google, and saw that some masochistic lunatic was actually trying to restore it himself. And, with a lot of help from you guys, he pretty much pulled it off. I salute ocpmovie's incredible, Quixotic, unpaid efforts to restore a film from found tatters scattered literally around the world, and the efforts of all of you who made his work possible. You're heroes to a lot of artists and animators - there's no other way to put it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The other reason is to add one name to the list of companies that would be worth contacting in the name of trying to get a more official restoration done, a company with far greater resources than the admirable and effective open-source approach taken thus far would be able to muster. I actually view the RECOBBLED CUT as a triumph of the open-source collaborative model, but that's a thread for Slashdot, not Originaltrilogy.

That company is Studio Ghibli, specifically their new Ghibli Museum Library sub-label, dedicated exclusively to Western animation. They've got the deep pockets to pay for what needs to be done - they can afford to do things that the well-intending likes of Unearthed Films and even Criterion simply couldn't afford, like solving pesky rights problems with the Weinstein Company, if that's even a factor in Japan, where the film last surfaced via Disney, who just happens to be Ghibli's main Japanese distributor. They've got the love and respect for animation in all its forms, and they'd certainly understand the significance of the project. I direct your eyes to their page for LE ROI ET L'OISEAU, a French animated film that I never heard of before today, which apparently has a protracted and troubled production history not unlike THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER, if not quite as extremely troubled and protracted. Look at the amount of love and effort that was put forth to present a restored version of this film to Japanese audiences (i.e. flip around the website trying to find the trailer like I did - it's well worth finding), and picture that, only with THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER. It's definitely a long shot, but the potential payoff is enormous, and there's certainly nothing lost by trying. THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER is a perfect fit with the concept of Ghibli Museum Library, and even if they're not in a position to do anything, if nothing else our pleas would not be falling on deaf ears. At worst they would fall upon helpless, sympathetic ones. They can be reached at post@ghibli.co.jp (it's probably a good idea to put ATTN: Ghibli Museum Library or something to that effect in the subject line), and obviously Japanese correspondence would simplify things on their end - but write in English if you must. I did. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" has served this project well thus far. There's no telling what might come of an attempt to bring Ghibli into the fray.

Thanks again for all of your hard work. I fade back into the mists of antiquity... I trust ocpmovie will see this one way or another.

(and no, I'm nobody of any importance pertaining to THIEF AND THE COBBLER, just a fan)

Does anyone still have a copy of the ifo/bups I posted that fixed the disc stopping after playing the main movie?

I don't have them and I've had 3 requests for it in the past couple weeks.

YouTube deleted ocp's account, so you can't watch any of his Thief stuff there anymore (deletion was apparently for his Deleted Magic videos). However, everything is still up on Google Video here. RW's A Christmas Carol has gotten almost 15,000 views since Nov. 16! The Recobbled Cut has received almost 12,000!

I'm still working on it. The big thing I have to do is to create a new master of the workprint. I'm going to take care of this in Final Cut Pro this or next week. It has to be re-synched and partially "replaced" with 2nd gen footage (in the handful of dropouts and some audio needed). Once I get the workprint re-synched and made as complete as possible, the Cobbler in a Box will be ready. I'm going to send the DVD-R discs to one person first (the guy who sent me the 3rd gen sourced DVD-R that was my first exposure to the entire film), then either he can upload the zipped files or I can send a second/third set to others who can start a strong torrent. But the workprint is what's holding it up. I won't settle for the 2nd gen, nor will the out-of-sync eMule print be kosher. Best of all, I'm going to design an HTML menu to access stuff easily.

Holy ballsack! If you can get that transferred, it'd totally be worth it. If you try hard enough with a bit of grassroots campaigning, you can definitely raise that money. Hell, I know I'd pitch in.

When copyright is concerned, you've got to tread on eggshells, especially if you live in the United States; the US has powerfull lobby groups which can and do force law enforcement officials into overreacting on such matters.

Although a screening of the Recobbled Cut would be a great idea, please try to make sure that there will be absolutely no grounds for anyone to get in trouble because of it. In fact, could the very possession of the DVD be illegal? I wouldn't rule it out, given the amount of BS I've been hearing lately. In that case, it might be best not to advertise this fact and keep the information within a small group of people whom you trust.

By the way, I think that a good idea for a "Thief in a Box" release might be to give people who ask for them the materials to make their own version of the film and provide them with various different "raw" visuals, soundtrack files and scores (so that, for example, if they wish to use the alternate Flyover scene, they can add it in).

On a somewhat unrelated note, check this out, and then check out the English-dubbed version that Chris gave the link to in the comments. I got deja vu from watching the dubbed version; it reminded me of watching the Miramax cut of TatC after having watched the Recobbled Cut first. I'd say you could even compare those two versions in a class to teach students how easy it is to ruin a great film.
