Perhaps I'm sharing stuff here that you guys already know, but I thought this post from 2004 on the "Velocity Reviews forum was interesting...

To save you the trouble of following the link, the poster ("unclejr") says:

The Hong Kong SOTS LD is the exact same film transfer as the UK PAL
VHS tape. In fact, if you press your pause button while playing your
DVD, you will see overlapping still fields -- a tell-tale sign of a
PAL-to-NTSC transfer. Also, the film runs a few minutes shorter than
the NTSC-mastered Japanese LD -- another indication that the HK LD is
a PAL-to-NTSC transfer.

Of course, the phrase that caught my attention here was "overlapping still fields"... Can it be that Disney themselves are the culprit here? Why would *their* PAL-to-NTSC be f-ed up unless their PAL master was bad? (In fact, why wouldn't they have done a new TC straight to NTSC?) Sounds like the 2006 BBC broadcast was from this same fatally-flawed master. If so, shame on Disney (well, *further* shame, anyway) - and I guess that puts the kibosh on the Doctor M's contention that there might be a "pretty decent looking NTSC telecined source floating around somewhere". (Sorry, Doctor M - just don't want you to have to be Indiana Jonesin' around the 'net looking for an artifact that's only a legend...)

Well, just tripped over that and thought I'd FYI - if it's "old news", so be it...

Just finished downing DrGonzo's up of Mentor's PAL cap from RS, and looking forward to Dr. M's NTSC. I know it's heartbreaking to have to "throw away" picture information, but you'll have to be content with having made any kind of silk purse from this sow's ear...
