My newest experiment…

I’m planning to go through every mix I can and scavenge 1.0 elements from them, in the hopes that I can make a nearly complete stereo version of the mix.

So far I have the 1.0 mix, the 2.0 mix from CED, the 1993 mix from the GOUT, and the 2004 2.0 mix, plus the French and Spanish 2.0 mixes. (There may be usable elements in other mixes as well.) I’ve also built an incomplete track out of The Story of Star Wars (i.e., synched to GOUT and padded with blank space), it’s stereo and seems to exclusively contain 1.0 elements. All in all this would be a “best of breed” mix, in stereo, that should sound just like the 1.0 mix.

Idly, I wonder how well such a mix would dematrix to 5.1

This sounds like a good idea. I've got a few questions:

1) Are you considering the 1997 SE mix, which contains a lot of mono-isms? Or does the 2004 mix (which is based on the SE) supercede that?

2) Are you aware that Belbucus is currently working on restoring the mono mix?

1. Yes, though I can no longer find my mp3 of the 1997 mix. I would prefer to use the 1997 mix as the foundation for this reason. (I do have the VHS, but no VCR.)

2. A proper restoration of the mono mix will, of course, be mono. This mix will be stereo.

I made this sample clip (13 seconds, 1.2 MB):

The Death Star has cleared the planet / Rebel base in range

The video is GOUT and for reference only (but it's only 13 seconds). The audio is mostly GOUT except where I dropped in the changed lines from Story of Star Wars (which is stereo but is based on the mono mix). It starts at approx. 1:53:23. As you can tell, it's pure stereo. However, the voiceovers are the mono mix's.

Quite true. I brought it up not to invalidate your experiment, but to say that a higher quality 1.0 mix may soon be available, which you could use as one of your source mixes.

Cool sample. I do notice a slight hiss in the audio when the mono elements are dropped in though.

There's a definite drop in quality when the mono elements are dropped in. For those, you may want to consider using the 5.1 mix as a jumping-off point, getting rid of the center channel and downmixing everything else to stereo, and then mix the mono version in *over* that, so the quality difference isn't that noticeable. Unless that's completely ludicrous, which, given my limited experience in such things, is entirely possible.

It's possible, though it would have to be the 1997 5.1 (which I don't have), as we know the 2004 5.1 (which I do have) is seriously defective.

OK, here's what I'm trying now: I have the GOUT 2.0 English and GOUT 2.0 Spanish tracks loaded together in Audacity. I'm comparing them side by side, with a preference for English dialogue of course, but a preference for the Spanish mix as it is based on the mono version (it definitely has the right klaxons).

This will give me a hybrid mix consisting of all the 1.0isms I can eke out of GOUT.

The French audio is the original 70mm audio, but I have heard that the Spanish track is a reconstruction using multiple audio sources to create a track like the 70mm audio. I could be wrong and the Spanish track could also be the original 70mm audio like the French track.

It doesn't sound like the 70mm. It sounds much more like the mono mix (e.g., short klaxons, not long sirens; has the 3PO tractor beam line; has "Close the blast doors" - I checked all of these).

Pass 1. All in all, about 53 min. of footage has been edited. All but one of Beru's lines, and "Check that side of the street...it's secure", come from the mono mix; the other Beru line comes from Story of Star Wars. The sound effect changes are taken from the Spanish 2.0 mix. In some places where I used the mono mix I dropped in a new copy of the BGM, or even used snippings of the Spanish track, so as to avoid the track "going mono" for any amount of time.

Some line timing is different between the English and Spanish tracks on the GOUT. (I mean R2 and Greedo) I have generally preferred the Spanish track as it reflects the mono mix.

I don't expect this to be the best possible reconstruction, but it will at least fulfill my desire of hearing the mono mix in stereo in reasonably good quality.

I read that it was the 70mm soundtrack. I will try to find my source.

I know this may be too late or even redundant.. but what are you doing about the music? Were you able to mantane the sound quality? Jumping from mono to stereo--for me atleast--is too jarring when it comes to music...espeially when the question of where the music is comming from comes into play.

I just thought I'd ask if you're doing anything about that.

That is one piece of shit. You should consider using another souce, like the restoration currently worked on, just put it in stereo.

Wouldn't it have been better to use the 5.1 mixes of the foreign tracks for this. I know that the French & German 5.1 tracks off the 2004 DVDs contain a lot of the mono mix as their basis. You can strip them to separate tracks and use the left, right & surround tracks for the mix and easily add the English dialogue, including lines from the mono mix, but still end up with a good stereo mix . In the clip you posted it is very noticable when you drop the lines from the mono mix in. You can hear the stereo field expand and contract each time its dropped in and the EQ of the different tracks needs balancing too.. This can be eliminated quite easily by using the foreign 5.1 mixes.

Actually, they mesh quite well, and very little of my current working mix is actually not stereo - even when using the mono mix.

The blank parts mark where I was only using the mono mix.

This is also just a draft, and I may do additional work. During at least one of the Beru lines I actually added the music back in underneath from the OST then cropped around the voice, so it actually never goes mono. This is the trick I prefer, but I don't know enough about the OST to do this.

Keep in mind that the Spanish mix is 2.0, it's not mono, although it has all the mono elements.

My current priority of tracks is this:

1. Spanish 2.0 from GOUT (main source)
2. English 1993 from GOUT (for most dialogue; note that this will inherently synch with the Spanish 2.0)
3. English 2004 2.0 (for "Close the blast doors" and the 3PO line - unless you know any other monoisms?)
4. Story of Star Wars (one Beru line and some of the loudspeaker voices)
5. English 1.0 from ITV VHS rip (last resort)

This is more of a proof of concept than anything else.
