I'm not an expert, but I guess the correct pronunciation is "zvyezdnye vayny"
Correct russian pronunciation is "zvyOzdnye vOjny" (with accent on capitals).
There isn't much of "cultural perceptions", they just picked up the wrong guy to draw a poster.
His name is Yuriy Boksyor, and he had a pretty unique style.
I really like his poster art for one of the best Soviet thrillers, Agatha Christi's "Ten Little Niggers":

He's good for avant-garde and art-house kind of movies.
But Soviet cinema bosses definitely done a mistake when asked him to draw poster for Star Wars.
Totally unsuitable.

By the way, I'd be interested in how the trilogy was split into 5 parts... worth a fan edit maybe?

It was TV-show for teenagers called "Zebra" where they shown the whole trilogy in 5-10 minute pieces.
This "broadcasting" idea was authorized by George Lucas himself, letting "Zebra" not to pay any fees to Fox or Lucasfilm.
