Well, even if it is the Master Quest version, that wouldn't matter because only the dungeons were changed; everything else stayed the same.

Wow, really? I mean, you've only played the first Zelda and Wind Waker?

As soon as you get a Wii, you need to put some money up for Wii Points and get "A Link to the Past" and "Ocarina of Time"!

Yup. No kidding. I never played another Zelda after the original until Waker. I really, really regret ditching Nintendo for so long, and wish I'd stayed with it. Hopefully will get my Wii this weekend and I definitely plan to get the points card and visit the VC. I'll probably try to finish Waker prior to getting any more Zelda...pace I'm at, maybe two weeks. I don't get more than an hour or so per day on games so it'll take me a little longer.

I'm also going to try to get Mario Kart DS, so hopefully we can race some day!

Well, I gave Wind Waker another shot. The single most frustrating thing to me is still the camera control, which is evil if you are tight in the corner or a wall. The camera at that point just does not know what to do with itself, and centering it does nothing of any value.

Other than that, I've made some progress. I finally got the sail and am learning how to handle the boat. The nav system is...ok, though a little frustrating. The environments are BEAUTIFULLY rendered...makes me want to dive in for a dip. The only GC game I've seen that is better in terms of the environment is SMSunShine.

This is the only Zelda game I've played since the original, and it's been difficult for me to make the jump from 2-d "overhead" view to 3-d third-person. I miss the original music and some of the sound effects, but on the whole the game is pretty good. I thought that after years of playing more realistic games on pc that it would suffer, but I was wrong.

Yeah, Wind Waker was a toughie to get used to. It took me a good hour just to get myself acquainted with the camera - but stick with it because it pays off. It's an amazing game.

Did anyone else download OOT off of the Wii's VC? I played it for about an hour last night and noticed that when you press start to go into the save/item menu, the music glitches a tiny bit, like there's a crackle on it which is not a problem on the N64.

Also, is this the Master Quest version? I played through OOT on the N64 in December (it's been a while since I fired up the Master Quest disc) and last night I noticed something seemingly different. It's way harder. Could just be the controller, but I noticed that when you first leave the Kokiri Forest to visit the Deku Tree, the Deku Baba that attack keep growing back. I thought that in the original version you killed them and they didn't come back until you left the area...

You're right. That music problem is not there in the N64 version, but it's definitely there in the GameCube version. Settle a matter of curiosity for me. What color are the action buttons on the screen in the VCS version? In the N64 version, A (Action) was blue and B (Sword) was green, to fit with the N64 controller. The NGC version had A as green and B as red to fit with that controller scheme. Which one does the VCS version use? Or is it a new color scheme altogether?

As for the Babas returning, I recently played the game (both on N64 and NGC), and I recall them respawning in every version. And like Nanner said, only the dungeons were altered for the MQ. Nothing else was changed (except for the crescent moon, Fire Temple music, and blood that had already been altered in later cartridges as well).

The button layout is identical to the N64 version, with blue (A) being action and green (B) sword. The yellow face buttons are handled by the classic controller's right thumbstick - it's taking some getting used to!

I wonder if this music glitch is due to the Wii (or the GC) accessing a memory card/internal memory as opposed to the cartridge directly?

Also, I assume that the Wii version is the one with the non-Muslim offensind symbols and altered Fire Temple music - I'm only just past the Deku Tree so I don't know yet, but I'm guessing.

The N64 version I have is the one with the original music and symbols, but Ganondorf has green blood. I think it's the second batch released after the initial Gold Collector's cart, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll post up any differences I notice here.

There were golds and grays for the initial release. If you have the gold version you know you have the unaltered version, but if you have the grays it is harder. It does sound like your N64 cart is the first modified version Cassidy. From what I have read it sounds like the Wii version is the GC version only with the top right button icons changed back to the sixtyfour's style.

OK...I went to a local store here and found both the OCOT/Master Quest and also the Zelda Collector's Edition discs. Is it worth buying these? Or should I just wait for my Wii and the VC?

Depends - how much and what condition?

If they're new and under $40 then buy them! Trust me.

I think they were used...$15 for the MQ disc and almost $50 for the collector's edition.

My $0.02, Sage.

I'd get the Ocarina of Time/Master Quest disc.

Legend of Zelda is already out on the VCS, and it's a given that Zelda II and Majora's Mask will both be eventually. But the Ocarina of Time Master Quest may be harder to come by. Nearly fifty bucks for the Collector's Edition is way too much considering it came FREE with a GameCube.

As far as I know, the VC isn't releasing the Master Quest, right? If that's the case, definitely pick it up for GameCube.

Whoa, fifteen bucks used for the Master Quest disc? I have one still in shrink wrap. I sure wish I had that Collector's Edition disc if it is going for $50 used. I really don't think it is worth near that much. I would agree with Chaltab, Majora's mask is the only game on that disc not currently on the VCS, and there is no doubt it will be released in the near future. Doesn't Wind Waker sell for around $10 used now? It is crazy these free bonus discs go for so much. I bet the existence of the whole Wii shop thing will knock their value down considerably. Probably in a couple of years you will be able to get them for pennies. Of course I thought the same thing when I pawned off my two gold cartridges of the two NES games and I am annoyed everytime I think about it. I have still never found them at a decend price in any decend kind of condition.

I got that collectors disc just by subscribing to Nintendo Power.

Check Ebay. If it says "Zelda" on it and its' in good shape, you get quite a lot of money for it.

I paid close to $70 for a sealed copy of Ocarina a while back, versus $20 for a sealed Banjo-Kazooie...

I'm not interested in selling it at the moment. But lets see what it's worth in 10 years.

Couldn't agree with you more. You never get what they are worth at the moment, and you will regret it in the future. Then if one day you decide to undo that regret and go any buy your old memories again, you will find they cost more than what you sold them for.

On the other hand there are many things I have kept for the sake of selling someday, that have failed to gain any sort of value despite the fact they were valuable at the time.

Unless the games you want to sell are Superman 64 and Wave Race: Blue Storm.

Ha, I have forgotten about some of those. Now I remember Pilot Wings, Wave Race, and Shadows of the Empire were the first games I ever played on the 64. Needless to say, Shadows was the only one I bought when I finally owned my 64.

Well, I've decided to get some spare parts (controllers, power supplies, SD cards) for my GC. Yes a lot of games are going to the VC, but I have 3rd party games that aren't.

Wind Waker progress - I've received the baton. Took some getting used to in order to make it work, but I think I've got the hang of it. My kids are asking to play so I'm going to set up a new save file for them to use without screwing me up!

Man, that battle against IG-88 was insane. The noise he made was totally freaky...

Judging by the condition of my PlayStation which can barely load CDs anymore, and my N64 which works as well as the day I bought it. I am nervous about CD/DVD based consoles as far as longevity goes. I am fairly certain my N64 will last just as well as my previous Nintendo consoles (sans the NES with its poor cartridge loading system). However, with a GameCube what are the chances they will still be operation ten years from now? I can see why some of you are talking about buying a second unit and keeping it boxed. Motors inevitable burn out, and any CD device requires two motors. I guess it is a good thing the Wii has backwards compatibility. How great would it have been if they would have allowed classic controller support for Wii. Imagine an adapter that allowed you to plug in your NES, SNES, or N64 controller? Then all those old games would be perfect.

That was my absolute favorite level. I loved the music and looking in the background and making out familiar ships and machines hidden in the heaps of trash. I really liked jumping from train to train, it always got the blood flowing, especially on the harder difficulties. And yes, the battle with IG-88, I loved that battle. I like how he would sometimes jump and disappear, and while you are looking all over for him you suddenly hear the creepy noises he makes and he is behind you.

The "wampastompa" code in that game was really cool too. While it was very glitchy, it was cool to be able to control AT-STs, Stormtroopers, and Wampas. It was a really hard code to enter too. I invented a method using a toothpick stuck into the small in the middle of the joystick to allow you to use your teeth to assist in enter the code. It became much easier that way. Some of my friends would just use their chins to enter the code, but I found I could never hold the stick at the correct angle for long enough to get it to work. Those Lucasarts guys use to come up with some really cool secrets in their games. Like in Rogue Squadron for the 64, you could fly a Buick, or even a Naboo fighter long before Episode I even came out. They released the code shortly after the film hit theaters and it was hard to imagine this ship had been hidden in the game for the last five months without anybody even knowing about it. Then way back in the WIN95/DOS days they had all sorts of neat things hidden in Rebel Assault II, the most impressive of which was the Mystery Science Theater 3000 mode complete with silhouettes. That was fantastic, especially if you were a fan of that show.

You live in the UK, right?

It helps to learn when retailers put their stock out, as often they have Wii's unadvertised and it's just the luck of the draw.

Since I've bought my Wii through camping out and risking hypothermia, I've been to WalMart twice on a Tuesday just as they put Wii's in the display case. First time, there were 3 and were gone within 5 minutes! Second time there was one on display at noon...
