It doesn't matter if the demand for the originals isn't huge, or if the new versions are awesome because the fucking ships roll better. The originals have value, and don't even say there isn't enough sales potential for 3 bare bones discs, when there are 3 goddamn releases of Alexander and Smokey and the Bandit. It is the right, painfully simple thing to do.

From The Digital Bits...

We've been hearing from multiple sources now that the folks up at Lucasburg were surprised enough at the lackluster sales of last year's Star Wars Trilogy DVD re-run ("Now with Han shoots first!") that they're afraid they might have gone to the Sarlacc Pit one too many times, so to speak.

Oh gee!!! REALLY?!?!?!

As usual, there's no fucking common sense coming out of LFL.....they want to delay the box set cuz they think people have had too many SW releases and that's why the last one tanked? IS THERE ANYONE IN THAT COMPANY THAT HAS ANY FUCKING BRAINS WHATSOEVER??!?!?!? ARE YOU ALL IDIOTS WITH YOUR HEADS SO FAR UP YOUR ASSES THAT YOU CAN TASTE YOUR BREAKFAST???

Let me spell it out for any of you LFL retards in case you are reading.......NO ONE BOUGHT THE LIMITED EDITIONS CUZ THEY WERE SHIT QUALITY AND YOU CAN'T WATCH THEM ON A WIDESCREEN TV!!! GO TO BEST BUY AND SEE HOW MANY TVS ARE WIDESCREEN!!! WHO'S GOING TO BUY MOVIES THEY CAN'T BE PROPERLY WATCHED?!?!?!? AND YOU DUMBASSES WERE WARNED ABOUT THIS TOO....LAST FUCKING MAY!!!

YOU STUPID FUCKING DIPSHIT MORONS!!! GODDAMN, ARE YOU DUMB!!! PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES ALREADY......NIMRODS!!!

The preceding was aimed at Lucas and the employees at his companies who make the decisions and issue the public statements. The author of this post makes no apologies for said content because he cannot tolerate such stupidity. Jumpman, bringing up a point like this is irrelevant for multiple reasons. I have little respect for people who use it over and over again. It is most notably stupid because it assumes that there is no merit behind attempting a DVD-dedicated release of the theatrical version of Star Wars (and its two sequels) simply because there might be a few remaining idiots out there who would still complain about something additional, or simply because some mistakes might be made in the process. The theatrical versions of the original Star Wars films deserve plenty of respect (read and reply to Zombie's post if you disagree) and the demand for them is more than sufficient (even if it were from a small minority of Star Wars fans). People shouldn't cower in fear from doing the right or at least sensible thing simply because it cannot be executed perfectly. If you can explain otherwise (why your quoted argument may be cogent despite my objections) then I would suggest you do so. If you however cannot, I suggest you stop using the argument and thereby stop making yourself look foolish by repeating it.

IMO, LFL is the typical corporate conglomerate aka it has absolutely NO CLUE and is completely out of touch with reality and what its customers really want, so this rumor could be dead on.

But with that being said, I find it a little hard to believe that LFL won't pimp the 30th anniversary for all it is worth...

Its amazing how much things have changed. When the Definitive Edition was released on Laserdisc, it was an amazing set for its day. A commentary track even if it didn't run the entire movie, and the extras, were incredible for its day, when anything additional was pretty impressive. Today, we get the '04 DVD with trailers and Empire of Dreams, and a bad commentary track, not exactly 'nothing' but not very good, considering what it could of been. Subsequent releases didn't even give us that bonus disc. The PT gets a bonus disc for each movie, but the OT doesn't rate that much. Why not? Maybe we are spoiled with all these extras, but its not like Lucasfilm doesn't have loads of stuff that could be made into extras laying around. Some of the stuff that has come out of this board shows that. The common guess is that they were waiting until 'later' to release the bonus materials. Maybe they've decided that they've just gone to the well too many times, and have given up. I hope not. But as someone has said earlier, nowhere has anything been promised. It was just assumed by the fans because this is the 30th anniversary year. We'll see.

that was me,

although thinking back on that, Lucas did say in an interview around the time of the 9/12 release "now we'll see" and "it'll all come out in the end." Maybe to him this is nothing more than a funny experiment even though, as I keep saying, there's no way he doesn't know about the huge demand for a good quality OOT release. LFL should just do a high-def transfer of the OOT and get it over with so they can keep revising the SE every few years to keep it "updated."

As someone said in either this thread or one of the others, the star wars trilogy is just one of countless other movies that are yet to see the light of day. Watching that youtube video that someone linked to earlier, the "real political face talk" one, THX-1138's original version hasn't been released on dvd either. What are the chances it ever will be?

I just think Lucasfilm is lazy and don't really want to put out the definitive set. I always get mad at the Lucasfilm when I see how the LOTR movies were treated on DVD. You have a choice of the theatrical versions with a good amount of extras on the second disk, or the extended cuts in DTS, along with 3 bonus disks of countless documentaries that takes days or weeks to watch. Putting aside the SE/OOT debate, the '04 DVD Boxset is lame compared to other trilogy boxsets, and maybe they were holding off for future releases to cash in, but who knows anymore.

the way in which the theatrical LOTR dvd's were done would actually be my ideal treatment for the OOT. For each film, first disc is the movie in 16:9 enhanced widescreen and Dolby 5.1, with maybe a commentary or something since the movie isn't as long as an LOTR and hence doesn't take up as much space on the disc, and then the second disc would be all vintage documentaries, commercials, trailers, etc (then again, they already took care of the commercials and trailers on the '04 dvd). This wouldn't be hard to do at all, but LFL will probably drag this out as long as they can, selling us the "30th anniversary" stuff and the two tv shows before they bother to get around to it.

Lucas will construe this as lack of demand for the OOT, digging us forever into the pit.

Well, the last release was a problem either way. If it was a runaway success, Lucas would say it was because of the SE. If it failed, it was because nobody cares about the OOT. Either way, he gets to conclude that everyone loves changes, and nobody cares about the OOT.
It could be worse, though. I am also a fan of the Andy Griffith Show. On the season boxsets of that show, though, they have no extras, besides a few in-character commercials for one or two seasons. There has been numerous cast reunion specials, a made-for-TV movie, behind-the scenes documentaries, cast interviews, etc. for Andy Griffith Show. So there was no shortage of bonus materials. But they gave us absolutely nothing. So at least we got what we did. But yes, it would of been easy to have done much better than they did. And the LOTR series is a good example of how one should release a film series.

All they need to do is go on Amazon, it is spelled out for them there, I have never seen so many one star reviews for a product, not everyone wants the OT but it would have sold more had it been actually value for money, which it wasnt, and I cant believe LFL are that stupid to reliase that the product wasnt any good and thats why the figures werent as good as they thought they would be.

"DVD has been out for 10 years and the fans have yet to get a nice version of the OOT on DVD, and I find it hilareous that Lucas will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of SW this year, yet he says 'that' version doesn't exist anymore? Why doesn't he just celebrate the 10th Anniversary of SW this year because that is how long 'his' versions have been viewed by the public."

This is an awesome sig.

"this is the first time that something SW didn't sell well"

Actually, product merchandising for TPM was abysmal. Lucas complained that there was simply too much, and subsequently limited the licensing for AOTC.

"Why would he have to fix them if they were his vision finally realized?"

As is true with everyone, his vision deteriorates with age.

Right, but I think what was meant is that it was the first time a home video release of Star Wars did not sell well, and even that I think is up for debate because as we've said the numbers pretty conclusively show that the GOUT sets sold well.

Lucas really is an attention whore when it comes to the OOT. I actually want to believe that he authorized the GOUT release not only to keep money flowing into LFL but also to keep people talking about him.

I'm wondering, now, about the "Last Time to buy the OT" LDs, otherwise known as the Faces set. I knew someone who belonged to the Columbia House DVD Program (Buy 5, get one free), and he mentioned that those LDs were given away to new members, or something like that. Whilst the Def. Col. was going for big bucks, the Faces set, near the end, was going for $10 to $15 dollars, if that much.

Though I remember paying about $40 for the widescreen VHS release. Months later, I broke down and opened it up to play the films, and found out the tapes were bad. I was able to go back to the store (The Wherehouse, maybe?), buy a new set, and return the old set with the new receipt.

Just like to point this out:

The GOUT sold well. It was number one on Amazon pre-orders for a long time. Considering that it was the same film re-packaged for the third time, that is damn good. I guess maybe Lucasfilm was expecting it to be this giant hit?? For a triple-dipped disk that was technically flawed from its initial release, that is one of the best dvd sellers of the year as far as i am concerned. So, the news that LFL considers it dissapointing to me is very strange.

Secondly, the news is not that the set has been cancelled, its that it is CONSIDERED being cancelled for fear of over-exposure. It may yet come out. Thirdly, there was already that press release, i think it was Lego, that said there was a new dvd set coming out; the news then is that a few execs are considering "maybe we should wait another year?" not "cancel the release right now." Considering its the 30th anniversary i can't see any logic in postponing it until any other date. But, you know, Lucasfilm and all--dumbasses.

Fourthly, i think there is a very significant item in the digitalbits rumor (remember--rumor) that should be highlighted. Nine-disk set. The prequel dvds are two disks each, totalling six--that leaves only three disks for the entire OT, in other words, movie-only, not even the GOUT or the 2004 bonus disk. This to me is even more perplexing--its just the previous releases, with less bonus material, in an expensive box? At least they could include the bonus disk. Just doesn't make sense.

For all these reasons, i am suspecting that maybe this report is bogus, or inaccurate at least. My feeling is that if LFL released a 30th anniversary boxset, it would probably include a few additional extras, like perhaps deleted scenes or a vintage doc on a second, exlusive bonus disk, plus maybe even the Clone War animated series which Lucasfilm sort of considers Episode II.5, and the GOUT would make sense considering this whole year Lucasfilm is really milking the "vintage" and "classic" imagry of the OOT for the anniversary. I still give digitalbits benefit of the doubt, but there are a few aspects to this report that i think are not quite right.

I think the "9-disc" part of the rumor is actually just pure speculation and a jumped-to conclusion on their part. It's funny the way you construe it as the 2-disc prequel sets plus the '04 OT discs, 'cause I was thinking something quite different. If it were nine discs, I'd think it would be the latest 2007 edition of the saga plus the 3 OOT movies fully remastered. If the Superman set was 14 discs and it could be sold for only 70 dollars, I don't see why LFL can't go all out and do at least 12 discs for the movies themselves plus any additional discs on top of that.

That's right, because ever since Lucas wrote the first word for the draft of Episode 1 and did the first alteration for the SE that the death of the OOT was beginning. The world will not allow the last release of the OOT to be non-anamorphic, but Lucas will make that happen.

I bet on his death; but when can any person predict the death of any human being? And will the need for another 100 million dollars give us the impossible hope of a good-looking OOT? As it had been said 500 million times, the release on the OOT in non-anamorphic is the least expected caveat for our demand for the OOT on DVD, and Lucas only did it to 1)get rid of SE DVD's at the warehouse, and 2)justify the de facto destruction of the OOT by saying there is no demand and that the best we will ever get is letterbox. Lucas has proven to me that a person can genuinely, with enough money, destroy every shred of a groundbreaking and enormously popular film trilogy. It is equivalent to burning every copy of the Godfather that you can afford. So, we might as well go into a life of piracy, become a Lucas propaganda slave, or go into some sort of rehab to wean you of the OOT like they do for drugs. I sincerely hoped that the OOT would be released on DVD, but that hope is essentially dead. Game over. You can forget seeing Han shoot first and Sebastian Shaw on your 50' HDTV.
