I've been following this for months in the papers, as its been main in the buissness section. Disgusting. This is why I hate apple and anything that has the "i" pretense before it.

You hate apple because they defended themselves against a lawsuit? Or you hate apple because they like the name iPhone?

I personally don't hate Apple, but I do believe they're not so innocent in this case. They knew someone else owned the iPhone trademark and they assimilated it anyway. If Microsoft had done that every Linux hack and Steve Jobs sycophant on the planet would be screaming bloody murder. Apple has in the past made a good living out of pointing out how evil Microsoft is...I wish Cisco had nailed them to the wall on this one.

That being said I'm still considering a Mac for the kids...

Hmm, Microsoft isn't evil, they just positioned themselves well. It's just that I believe that Steve Jobs, as a leader, has more intelligence and style when compared to Bill Gates. There has been less luck involved with his success.

True to a large degree, but none of that would matter if they didn't have a patent on a programming language. Nobody buys a Microsoft operating system because it's well made or because its features are so fantastic. They'd have little power to manipulate people if they were forced to compete on that level. It's mostly luck.

What language do they own a patent on?

For the record, Bill and his buddy didn't even create DOS. It was created by another company, and bought by Bill and resold as his own (legally, but you get the point.) It was certainly luck to begin with, but it was parleyed into much more. When your licensing agreement with the computer manufacturer states that they will pay will pay a royalty on every computer they sell, whether it has DOS or OS/2 (remember that one?), then the computer manufacturer would be stupid to not put DOS on the computer that they are paying a royalty for anyways.

Then again, the computer manufacturer would be stupid to sign such an agreement in the first place, but what's done is done.

And I've been lurking off and on, JediSage. Nice to see I'm still noticed around here. Been busy, lately, and ready to jump back into that X0 action.

Stop all of this pickle twisting you fags. Bill Gates is awesome for providing Windows, and Steve Jobs is awesome for providing the Ipod. If Bill Gates hadn't been rummaging through the trash at Xerox, you retards wouldn't even be able to have this discussion. We should start bitching about the companies that don't provide anything so awesome, like Bugle Boy or Applebees.

Jedisage, Microsoft owns a patent on the 86-DOS language and all of the other OS languages it made after purchasing it.

The business deals that Microsoft made were very good for them and I can't pretend that luck had much to do with that. But otherwise, the development of IBM clones and Microsoft's freedom to capitalize upon their existence was rather lucky . . . though, then again, had they been less aggressive with their business deals when they encountered that situation, they probably would not have achieved the same level of success based on that luck. So, I guess you're right.

I'm confused. Are you classifying the underlying code that makes up the OS as a language? Or are you talking about the OS as a whole as a language? I think Windows is written in C and assembler for the most part. Sorry if I sound dense I'm just not following you. I mean, DOS was a looooong time ago, and it would be hard to say that they're STILL profiting from it in a technical sense. I guess I just don't see what the problem is with patenting a programming language.

As far as smart business moves, Apple made a HUGE one with Xerox-PARC. The GUI revolution came out of that group and Apple had no problem "positioning" themselves to take advantage of it.

Well, Xerox saw no real use in the mouse or the GUI, and so didn't bother to patent them (there were a few others, but these were obviously the biggies. My mother worked for Xerox back in the day.)

"I'm confused. Are you classifying the underlying code that makes up the OS as a language?"

I'm sure he's talking about the code. There were actually quite a few versions of DOS, such as Dr. Dos and such.

First, don't consider me an expert on operating systems or software programming. I just know that the copyrighted, source code for DOS was very important to solidifying Microsoft's dominance. Even Windows 95/98/ME all sort of ran on top of DOS as a boot loader. However having a patent on the source code works, the basic Windows API (heh, gogo wikipedia!) that the most popular PC programs used to run on computers was then hard to emulate or reproduce (at least for average PC customers like myself). That means I basically had to buy a Microsoft system whether or not I wanted its unreliable environment, one-size-fits-all add-ons, or other crap. Sure, Microsoft did stray from DOS with NT, XP, and now "Vista" but its such a dominant company now that they don't have to worry so much about losing the top position in the market. (I also remember something about how the complexity of Windows and the way that Microsoft had all the secrets to keep each new version working with older software [even when it was messy software] helped ensure that the competition could not run the same programs as easily.)

As for the GUI, it was Xerox's mistake to give away its hard work. Its not like Steve Jobs snuck into their facilities and stole something that Xerox was trying to keep private. They allowed their ideas to be seen and he simply took them because they were really good. I see no highly aggressive business tactic there.

I wasn't accusing Apple of stealing anything or being overly aggressive. They saw the potential in something that Xerox didn't know what to do with, and really didn't care for.

Microsoft also didn't steal the OS that would become DOS. They purchased it for...$80,000 I think from a Seattle company.

Both companies made good moves in the beginning. Once they both got up and running it became more of a market thing. Yes, both MS and IBM flexed their muscles to get their way but that's the nature of business (we've seen it before, eg: Standard Oil, AT&T, IBM, etc). There were (and still are) alternatives to consumers out there, including Apple, but due to bad management decisions they lost that fight. I just can't attribute MS's 25 years of success to buying DOS alone, nor Apple's failure to regain market share based solely on alleged illicit-business practices on MS's part. I'm not saying either of you implied that, but it just seems to be...there...when discussing MS & Apple.

Rob is absolutely correct to me. Irregardless of how they did it, MS is now the worlds leading company and Bill Gates the richest man. They did good for themselves.
