Nintendo Power was pretty crappy during the N64 and early Gamecube days. They barely even acknowledged that Nintendo even HAD competation back then.

That's weak. You beat the competition by making superior products and letting them speak for themselves, highlighting the differences. Not by ignoring it.

Nintendo Power is a Nintendo publication. So they aren't going to do anything that could be viewed in any light as promoting anything non-Nintendo. But Nintendo Power was never great. Even in the NES days it had problems and wasn't the best. They too often gave bad tips, bad codes, etc. But I do believe that it went down from the end of the SNES.

They've become a bit more fair in recent years. I've seen some fairly harsh ratings to some games, even ones published by Nintendo.

But as for Nintendo Power, I stopped buying consistently around '98 or so, and from what I've seen lately, it's gone substantially downhill primarily because it's now infested with so many ads, just like any other magazine. Remember the old NP where it was just content? Say what you will about that content, but at least it wasn't interrupted by ads in the middle of articles.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I remember a few years back when Electronic Gaming Monthly did one of their April Fool's Day cheat codes (I think this one was that you could unlock Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee by getting ten kills in Cruel Melee), and Nintendo Power took a potshot at them in the next month's issue, saying something along the lines of "We pride ourselves on being honest with our subscribers and not tricking them with false information" or some crap like that.

As an interesting side note, so many people were angered by the April Fool's Joke that EGM held a contest where people were to send a videotape of them getting ten kills or more, and they'd win a copy of whatever game of the month they had that month. (I think the highest was over 20....and with Jigglypuff, no less!)

Skyman8081 tells me that he can kick anyone's head in with Jigglypuff. Who knew?

Jigglypuff is possibly the most powerful character in the game.

That is really funny. I hate April fool's jokes in publications like that. It gets to the point were it is pointless to even check on anything during the month of April.

Well, they had "EGM EXCLUSIVE!!!!!" plastered all over the page, so only n00bs would misinterpret it.

Um--Ganondorf? Yeah. Granted he's slow, but that's how balance works.

Ip banned or account banned. Did you use the exploit to try to get around it?

Never got into that one much. Tried playing it a few times, but ultimately found it annoying and not too entertaining. Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance. I had high hopes for it since it was subtitled Super Mario World 2 and all, but I felt it didn't live up to SMW (which was a near perfect Mario game in my opinion. Absolutely fantastic. Especially if you played it from the context of upgrading from an NES with the wonderful SMB3 to a SNES when it first came out). The one thing about SMW that has always bothered me from day one is that the gumbas don't quite look right. They look more like balls with feet than walking mushrooms.

SMW2: Yoshi's Island was an absolutely brilliant game. I only consider Super Mario Brothers 3 to be superior and that's only in a purely historical sense. Each level offered entirely new mechanics, challenges, and fun. That and the game was an exploration/find-everything gamer's dream. I still get orgasmic when I think of it today. And I shouldn't forget to mention how the graphics in the game were amazing. Not only were they pretty (in their crayon-drawn style) but the most impressive effects were actually used for gameplay purposes in the vast majority of cases! ::sigh::

The only downsides to the game were the sound of Mario's shrill crying (which you really wouldn't hear too often once you got good at the game) and the fact that the overworld map was so linear and closed.

About Nintendo Power though, I had always hated their reviews since they almost never offered real opinions unless it was absolutely safe for them to do so. But, other than that, I liked NP for the "inside" Nintendo information they often provided (with the Donkey Kong Country VHS being the pinnacle of that). In the SNES era they were the most bold when it came to their criticism and comparisons with competing consoles. With Gamecube it was almost like idiots were running the magazine. And, now with the dominance of internet, gaming websites I see virtually no reason to get a print magazine, much less Nintendo power.

Heheh. Not at all, though since I still own my N64 cartridge AND the Collector's Edition Gamecube disc there's no way I'm downloading the Wii VCS version.

How's this?

I bought the game in 1998 for my N64. Sold it in 2001 to finance the Gamecube @ launch.

I bought the Gamecube Version a few years later with the Master Quest...but I still missed the original version.

This summer I bought a N64 and a sealed copy of Ocarina on Ebay. It is glorious.

Tonight, I plan on downloading it from the VC on the Wii along with Donkey Kong Country.

I'm crazy like that.

Well, I gave Wind Waker another shot. The single most frustrating thing to me is still the camera control, which is evil if you are tight in the corner or a wall. The camera at that point just does not know what to do with itself, and centering it does nothing of any value.

Other than that, I've made some progress. I finally got the sail and am learning how to handle the boat. The nav system is...ok, though a little frustrating. The environments are BEAUTIFULLY rendered...makes me want to dive in for a dip. The only GC game I've seen that is better in terms of the environment is SMSunShine.

This is the only Zelda game I've played since the original, and it's been difficult for me to make the jump from 2-d "overhead" view to 3-d third-person. I miss the original music and some of the sound effects, but on the whole the game is pretty good. I thought that after years of playing more realistic games on pc that it would suffer, but I was wrong.

Yeah, Wind Waker was a toughie to get used to. It took me a good hour just to get myself acquainted with the camera - but stick with it because it pays off. It's an amazing game.

Did anyone else download OOT off of the Wii's VC? I played it for about an hour last night and noticed that when you press start to go into the save/item menu, the music glitches a tiny bit, like there's a crackle on it which is not a problem on the N64.

Also, is this the Master Quest version? I played through OOT on the N64 in December (it's been a while since I fired up the Master Quest disc) and last night I noticed something seemingly different. It's way harder. Could just be the controller, but I noticed that when you first leave the Kokiri Forest to visit the Deku Tree, the Deku Baba that attack keep growing back. I thought that in the original version you killed them and they didn't come back until you left the area...
