I’m wondering if it’s possible/feasible to strip out the music from ANH in some format (I have the 2004 DVD if it’s of any help to it).

I’m thinking of stripping it down to that so I can do a completely new mix. (Acquiring OST now for that purpose.)

You might want to try the technical forum. I think some people have attempted this, with limited degrees of success.

It's my basic understanding that it's damned near impossible, though.

Here's a similar topic: Dialog and FX *ONLY* Audio Track? with technical possibilities to accomplish the task. (the idea has been accomplished on pop songs) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attempt it, since i haven't gotten access to a copy of the ISOMix's. (anyone know a live trrnt?)

I meant extracting it from the 5.1 stream, not a 2.0 stream. It's almost certainly easier to isolate them from 5.1

Extracting channels 4 and 5 (0123 being the corners) seems to do a nice job.

Now as soon as I can get a working isomix I can start hacking away...

I'll prolly mirror this in the tech forum though I only really monitor this one...

I got reasonably good results working from the 2004 DVD (remove left/right/surround) but there's still some soundtrack bleed, maybe I'll get better from a 5.1 based on the 97 lasers. My idea is to lay everything on a multitrack in Audacity, tweak up a few things (with the mono mix), and create a whole new mix.

Well, if you manage to get a 5.1 rip from the 97 laserdiscs, please upload it/them somewhere so we can all benefit from it/them. I've yet to see a 97 SE audio mix made available. I know that it's most likely very similar to the 2004 mix, but that mix did have a number of problems.

It's not bleed...that's how they were mixed. The center channel contains most of the dialogue, but dialogue is not necessarily limited to the center channel. Otherwise, there'd be no stereo/pan effect when people to one or the other side of the screen are talking.

The LDs are 4.0

Have you tried the radio dramas. There are quite a few isolated FX that could be used. I'm sure you could find some speeder FX you could use

All I can do is drop the 5 and .1 channels from my 2004 DVD :/

If nothing else, it would sound neat to have a "mostly isovoice" mix.
