Getting too old for this sort of thing? — Page 2

I just turned 26.

I got to see Return Of The Jedi in the theatre. My Mom says that when Luke took off in hix x-wing after they all defeat Jabba, I was worried about R2's head being exposed in space.

I'm 19 (February 23rd, 1988).

My first exposure to the series was with the "Faces Set", and I've never stopped loving the series, in spite of the prequels.

27 here, My mom has told me that she took me to the ESB screening when it first came out, but I was just about to be one years old. I distinctly remember my brother and I playing with our Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker action figures when I was about 3 or 4. He also had an x-wing that he played with all the time. We used to go over to a freinds house to even be able to touch an AT-AT walker. My actual first memories of the real movies was in about '84-'85 when my Dad got a hold of it somehow, I think it was on laserdisc, and we viewed the entire OOT as a family over the course of a week. Then in 1997, we did that again when he bought the 1997 SE.

I'm just about to hit to 40 mark in a couple of months. I was lucky enough to see Star Wars at the first showing in Birmingham UK in '77. I can remember seeing the trailer months earlier and pestered my mum & dad constantly to take me and we were lucky enough that one of my dad's mates worked at the local cinema and we got tickets to the first showing. I was hooked from day 1. I doubt i will ever be too old

Tell me about it. I just remembered that my eldest daughter was also 10 when she was first able to see star wars on the big screen when the special editions came out in '97. She was star wars mad since the age of about 8 months. The first time i put the video on she was having a bit of a kiddy tantrum, but the second the star wars theme started she suddenly went quiet & just became glued to the tellyand remained that way until the second that the end credits music finished then she started again. I thought that it was just a fluke so i rewound the video and started it again and the same thing happened. She just couldn't get enough of it & has remained that way since. must be in the genes.

Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw on the big screen. Later that year I saw Watership Down and Superman. But Star Wars has the distinct place in my heart of being the first time I ever saw a big screen. I remember the hype. I still have the Kenner action figures (R2-D2 was my first). I remember Donny & Marie spoofing Star Wars. I remember missing the Star Wars Holiday Special and hearing all about it from my next-door neighbor. It sounded great, with awesome scenes of the cantina characters and a guy who drank from the top of his head. I will only be too old for this sort of thing when I'm pushing up daisies.

And if you guys think what a kid like me thinks about SEs an PT... Well, at first I thought that the SEs were cool because of better picture and sound quality like they showed in the featurettes before the movie. I didn't focus to the things they changed. Then I heard about Episode I. I thought why would they make more because the story is complete already. But I got excited about it and I even went to see a movie because I knew they'd show TPM trailer for the first time! Man! When I saw The Phantom Menace, I thought it was kind of cool with all these lightsaber fights, but I never ever thought that it was better than any of the originals. As I grew couple of years older, I was maybe 14, I started to hate it. I thought AOTC was as boring and crappy as it is still to me.
And of course, I absolutely hate this Lucas' tinkering and weird stuff he's come to. I want the real theatrical releases on DVD, dammit! Btw, I've been eagerly waiting for X0 for two years now. I'm so happy when it's launched.

I too am 19 (4/13/87...hence the numbers in my sn) and I first saw the OT all in one day in maybe 1995 when my dad brought down the VHS set he had. It's the black box that had wing type things on the sides and original poster artwork on the boxes...I think.

I agree with most of what you said here, I was too young to really care about GL's revisionist craziness (plus we all still kind of assumed he'd not completely disavow the existence of the OT at the time). When TPM was announced and released and so forth, I was in the perfect demographic GL had obviously targeted and was sucked in by the hype, all the crazy CG (still didn't care for Jar Jar...mainly his voice) and cuz I thought Padme was pretty good lookin' (still holds true). When AOTC was released, I was older and wiser to what was going on. I was bored with the over-use of CG that wasn't even that good most of the time and the convoluted story-telling that really was going anywhere sometimes. Then the hype of ROTS started and I truly believed I'd get to see an excellent Star Wars movie the day it was released. Sadly, the 8 hours in the line/party in front of the theater turned out to be more fun than the movie, but it was a slight step above AOTC. Overall, the only PT movie I really watch anymore is TPM because I liked it so much more at the time I saw it than the other 2...and the CG looks better on film....and the Maul saber battle....and the pod race....yep.

EDIT: Yep, this VHS set...http://i2.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/8b/95/2a74_1_b.JPG

I just turned 30. I think I've known about Star Wars most of my life. Born into the time it was so popular. All the older kids around me were into it, and they indoctrinated me. Wasn't so hard to convince.
I remember when my dad took me to see Jedi in the theater in 83. That was awesome. And even though can't remember my earliest memories of the other two so notably, that Jedi screening has never left my brain. Star Wars is great and formed a large part of my growing up. It's good to see the younger generation responding to the trilogy as well now.

I remember the line in my pissant hometown for Empire on opening day. All of the kids in my neighborhood were in that line. It must have been 100 yards long. But when it came to Star Wars, mom took me to the nearest "big" town 20 miles away to see it. It was sold out at the first theatre we went to so she found another one showing it. She still talks to this day about how my mouth hung open speechless at the start of it. I recall some other kid having to be taken out when R2 was shot by the Jawas, but again, I was simply transfixed. Silent as a tomb.

My Uncle took me to see Star Wars at The Odeon in London Leicester Square back in 77. I fell asleep and thought it was boring
Shame on me.

But for some reason, when it reached my home town I loved it and went to see it again and again with various members of my family and friends.
I do think though, if it wasn't for the action figures, I wouldn't have loved SW as much. Collecting them little babies holds the best memory for me. There was nothing better than finding that one bloody figure you've been looking for for ages, and seeing it on that shelf.

Remember seeing Empire, but Jedi was the best time for me. God I was so excited. A whole group of us went after school and man, I thought it was the best thing ever. I don't think I slept that night. It just kept going around and around my head. And because I only lived about 2 mins from our local cinema, I went to see it nearly every day. A few times I'd go and watch it in the afternoon, go home and get some grub, then go back and watch it again. 17 times in 3 weeks Happy days!!!

Saw SW in San Francisco in 77. I was living in Kentfield, up in Marin County at the time. I remember my Mom telling me about "that local guy, George" who did American Graffiti had been working on a space movie. I was oblivious to American Graffiti, as you can imagine as a 7 year old... But, the idea of a space movie sounded cool. I don't remember the theater (don't live there anymore), but I do remember having to stand in a line that wrapped around a couple of blocks three or four times. I have memory burn of when Vader walks into the Tantive IV and pauses, looking at the battle's dead. Everyone in the theater was cheering loudly for him. "Who the heck is this guy?", I was thinking. Oh yeah, I was hooked...

Saw ESB in Salt Lake City of all places in 80. Driving across the country with my Mom and our old BMW 2002 broke down outside of SLC. Got towed into town. My Mom dropped me off at a theater and I watched it 3 times in a row. It had been out for a few weeks so the people at the theater didn't care. When the car was fixed, we continued on. Really didn't want to leave that theater...

Yeah, I guess I'm one of the old ones too...

I remember seeing ANH at a drive-in at some point, don't remember seeing ESB in theaters at all, and remember seeing ROTJ opening weekend.
As far as getting too old for this? Well, my wife would certainly say so, but here I am anyway. BTW, I am a newbie here and I really dig it. I'm also a member to another SW board, but there appears to be more of an older, more mature crowd here and that's refreshing at times.

Wow, am I the oldest on the board? I'm 46. Saw SW five times in three different theaters when it opened (I was 17 in 1977). SW had been heavily hyped in northern CA by a popular late-night TV show hosted by Bob Wilkins - so I knew it was coming, knew it would be good, and loved every minute of it. I remember every detail as if it were yesterday.

My only regret is never having seen it in 70mm. Five years ago, I saw 2001 in 70mm, it was without question the most stunning image I've ever seen on any screen. I can only imagine what SW must have looked like in 70mm. I should have driven to LA to see it. If a print ever made a tour, I'd fly out to see it... although I'd probably have a heart attack or something watching it.
