I had to download it from the Wii Shop Channel... Strange.

Oh. That's weird, but it makes sense, as new channels (such as the internet one) occupy space on the hard disk, while the weather and news ones were already there, but just waiting for activation. Gonna try it later.

What you have to do is go to the Wii settings to update the Wii, which also updates the Shop Channel which then makes the Voting Channel available. I think the reason that the News and Forecast channels were just waiting for activation is because those were promised for launch whereas the Internet and Voting channels were kind of a suprise.

Yeah, I did that, got it from the shop channel. Pretty funny, but seems kinda pointless, unless Nintendo is using the data colected for demographics research.

Like I said, it's not that great now but it has wonderful potential.

At least we know they'd be willing to listen to Wii gamer voices. Microsoft has a similar program with periodic surveys, and have taken into account feeback from Major Nelson's site, and Sony has...well...Syphon Filter is available for download.

O RLY? I never really cared for the Syphon Filter games.

Still, I guess if someone does, it's good that Sony is listening. I just hope SSBB online rocks as much as it deserves to.

I was being very much tongue in cheek

No bones about it, I'm a Wii360 gamer - but what Sony does well, they do extremely well, so I'll give them their props where due. But their promised online service is at best a sub-par version of XBL, and at worst, a little behind the release rate of Nintendo's "online" service...

Nintendo's Online service will never get past the need for Wii Codes--unless some clever programmers figure out a way to get around the need for them in software.

The floodgates would be open were Nintendo to offer an online service similar to Xbox Live. Maybe online multiplayer without voice chat, I don't know...

I've been turned off of XBL due to the smacktalk, racism, sexism and general poor behaviour of the majority of the "gamers" on the service. Microsoft's answer is to use the feedback feature and mute voices, but one shouldn't have to do that to have a fun online experience.

With Nitendo's decidely more PG oriented image, I can't imagine them everoffering a service with the robust features of XBL...S'okay, I'm content to just download old...I mean classic games.

Speaking of which, anyone pick up Donkey Kong Country?

I do not have a Wii, but I must say I have been very impressed with all I have heard about it since its release. Especially the whole ability to play all sorts of classic games on it. But there are a few things I have been curious about. First off, how are the games obtained? Are they downloaded onto a hard drive? Or are they floating out on a network? If they are actually saved to your Wii itself, what happens when your disk gets full, assuming you could dl enough game to fill it, would you have to get rid of some to get more? Or if the games are kept on a network, what happens when the Wii becomes obsolete and Nintendo decides it is no longer worth keeping the Wii network online. Will all your paid for classic games be unaccessible? Also does it bother anyone else having to repurchase games you have already at one point paid the full price for? I would not like that. For me to repurchase my entire NES and SNES collection (or even just the few I consider "must have" games) at five bucks or so a game would really take a chunk out of my wallet. But the whole concept as a whole is really cool. And if these classic games purchased for use on the Wii were to be usable on the next Nintendo system as well, that would make them all the more valuable.

All of the classic games available to download and play on the Wii are stored on the 512mb internal Flash memory. The games can be backed up on SD cards, but they are unplayable from the card itself. The games you download are locked to your system, and you must transfer the game back to your Wii console to play them.

In the event that you need to erase any games you download, you can re-download them free of charge whenever you want. Nintendo tracks which games have been downloaded to the Wii console, resolving any issues of "losing" games for good. Essentially, once bought you own the games in perpetuity.

It doesn't bother me that I've spent money on games I've already owned in the past for two reasons. One, it's nice not to have a clutter of systems. The downside of this is that you're not using the original controller to play the games, but the Classic Controller is so similar to the SNES controller that it's negligible. It's hard to explain, but it evokes the NES, SNES and N64 controller all at the same time.

Second, if you have a decent AV setup, the games look better than they would on the original console. Super Mario Bros. looks a hell of a lot better on the Wii hooked up to an LCD TV with the component cables, than regular RCA cables with the original NES. So, that's a benefit if you care about that sort of thing.

Personally I still like to have the boxed copy of the game on the original system it was intended for - you won't catch me playing 'Ocarina of Time' on the Wii, the original setup was just too perfect, but it's still nice to have the option to not have to drag out all of your vintage systems.

As for your last question, well, Nintendo could essentially "future proof" the games you've downloaded by implementing a Virtual Console into their next system, but who the hell knows what that is going to be.

I'd much rather have the ability to transfer the games over to a portable gaming device like the DS - now THAT would be cool.

That would be awesome to be able to transfer those games to you DS and play them. Thanks for answering my questions.
I know what you mean about not wanting to play Ocarina of time on the Wii, it does have a perfect setup on the N64. I think controller style doesn't matter as much with pre-n64 games though.

I still have my older systems, and a ton of games for them, and instead of dragging out the old systems to play them, I have an old laptop with s-video output and an N64/PSX controller to USB adapter and emulators for all my old systems and rom dumps of all my old games. With this I can play my old NES and SNES games on my TV just like the real things, only with an N64 controller. I find the N64 controller to be ideal for these older games since it have the classic style d-pad and the shoulder buttons and c-buttons which work perfectly for the SNES, and the a and b buttons that work perfectly for the NES. My preference would be to play my SNES games with a real SNES controller, so maybe someday I will lay down the twenty some bucks to buy a SNES to USB adapter. I just wish I could use the zapper.

Ah, and my laptop also works to play my old PSX games (only have a few games, and my PSX takes hours to load anything) and since my adapter has a PSX controller slot I can play them with the authentic controller, PSX games don't always emulate perfectly though and can take a lot of messing around with settings to get them right.

How great would it be if they made an adapter for the Wii so that you could use your old N64 controller to play your N64 games. Just thought of something else I am curious about, in Ocarina of Time, the top right corner of the screen had representations of all four c buttons and the a and b buttons with a label (i.e. jump, talk, Navi) or an icon representing the idem that is equipped to that particular button. Have they changed this on the Wii version to be representations of the classic controller's buttons rather than the N64 controller's buttons?

I haven't played the Wii version of OoT, but I own the GC version (both the Master Quest disc and the Collector's Edition disc), and on the GC controller you have two options: for the C-Left, C-Right, and C-Down, you can use the X, Y, and Z buttons (respectively) a la Wind Waker, or you can use the C-Stick. The XYZ set-up works fairly well except for playing the ocarina (since there's no C-Up button), at which time you have to use the C-Stick, which is a pain in the ass; it's unresponsive and you have to point the stick in the precise direction or else you screw up the note.

I personally think Wind Waker would be awesome with the Wii-mote, if only for the fact that I could actually use the remote as the Wind Waker instrument.

That would be nice. Also, there is no Wii version of OOT yet.

Actually I'm reasonably certain that it's out on the VC in Japan.

Don't know...I just finished it about 3 weeks ago for the I-don't-know-how-many-times, and the control scheme is so damn tight on the N64 that I can imagine playing it any other way.

Same goes for Twilight Princess. I just finished playing for a couple of hours and I could never imagine playing it without the Wii controls. Only thing that pisses me off about it is not being able to lock the Z-Target and having to constantly press the button. That's why I liked Ocarina - you could lock on and then just circle your enemy and look for an opening. I miss that.

I guess my point is that certain games are designed to take full advantage of a console's control scheme, and some of it must get lost in translation. Having said that, I only spent about an hour playing Ocarina Master Quest on the GC and couldn't really get used to it.

I'm sure I'll eventually break down and buy Ocarina for the Wii whenever it comes out in North America...although I have to admit, Twilight Princess is really giving it a run for its' money. Were it not for Ocarina's soundtrack, I don't know...

Rumour has it that Microsoft will be releasing a new SKU of the Xbox 360 sometime soon...

New Xbox 360?

Apparently it will have a quieter drive, larger hard drive and HDMI out.

It's still cloud talk, but if this pans out I'm so going to be pissed. THIS is why I am increasingly becoming a Nintendo Fan Boy. THIS is why it pissed me off that Microsoft is potentially blurring the line between PC and console gaming...so what? Maybe certain games will need the larger capacity hard drive, or a faster drive, or hell, even a built in HD-DVD drive.

I'm telling you, they rushed this thing out of the gate too soon to beat the others. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Dead Rising, Halo, Gears Of War etc...but this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Honestly, were it not for Banjo Threeie I don't think I would keep the system if a beefier one came out. I might just say "Fuck you Microsoft" and sell all of my shit and get an iBook or something. I don't take this lightly either - I froze my ass off overnight to get that damn thing. I wasn't alone - the least they could do would be honour us somehow...although I know that won't happen.

Sorry about the rant.

Except for the C-stick issues that Nanner mentioned, I thought Ocarina of Time worked just as well on GameCube as it did on N64. Honestly, the C-stick only bothered me on the ocarina to a small extent. For my items, I always used it rather than X, Y, and Z. They just didn't feel like the game to me.

In other news, I just bought Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga today, and I think it's great. After years of watching the cartoons, they finally made a game that shows the Mario Bros. (whatever happened to the Bros., huh?) working together! Anybody else ever play this?

You KNOW that this can be set on the options so you don't have to keep the button pressed, right?

I don't care if a new 360 comes out. The loudness doesn't bother me and I can always delete stuff from the harddrive if I need more room. Game saves barely take up any space and there aren't that many games I want to demo for it. But it does suck for people who are very into downloading demos and have a problem with the loud disc drive. Still, they're better off than Sony this generation--for now at least.

And has Banjo Threeie been confirmed? That's friggin' sweet.

Dudes, it's like one-frame from a 30 second teaser trailer from E3.

The game will look like the N64 ones, obvioulsy with better graphics.

Hey, I wasn't saying it was bad. Their expressions in that frame were just funny, that's all. Then again, I've never actually played much Banjo-Kazooie to begin with.

Bad frame choice.

Seriously, I found the trailer online and am suddenly exicted. I am no, however, terribly hopeful, because it's been a while since Rare has put out a game I've been interested in pruchasing. I want this game to be good, but I'm cautious about being too optimistic.
