Looking for 1997 Star Wars Special Edition DVD9, 5 Star Edition (Please Help)

Hello Everyone,

I'm a long time reader of this forum but I rarely post. A couple of years ago a Hong Kong based company was offering the 1997 Star Wars Special Edition Trilogy in DVD9 format. From what I understand this version of the SE Trilogy was the best available on DVD. I believe it may have been called the "5 Star Edition" but I'm not certain.

Now I have DVDr versions of the SE Trilogy but I would like acquire the DVD9 versions if they are still available. I'm a bug for original packaging and such. I'm also a bit of a film history buff, especially when it comes to Star Wars. I would like to preserve every step of George's mania by owning every version of the trilogy available.

As we all know, the SE Trilogy stands between the Original Trilogy and the bastardized 2004 DVD box set. Its sort of an oddity now. So finding this DVD set is very important to me.

Is there anyone out there who can point me in the right direction? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance from one hardcore Star Wars fan to another.

All the best to you and yours.

Thanks for Reading.

There are some better quality DVDr versions of the SE floating around. The 5 Star may have been the best bootleg version availible, but from what I understand it is still pretty poor quality. If you want to own every version of Star Wars including the foreign bootlegs (which the 5 Star set is) you are going to have a lot of hunting and buying to do, because there are a lot of them. If you just want a good quality set of the 97 versions those are a lot easier to get than you think.

Thank you C3PX, I greatly appreciate your help. I guess what I really want is the best quality version of this trilogy. Although I'm a bug for original packaging, my priorities lie with getting the best video/audio quality possible.

If you can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I've been reading a few old topics on this subject but I'm still confused about which version is the best.

Thanks Again for all your help.

Look at the Galactic Trade Federation website. - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/gtf/

He has information for most all the major DVD transfers of the trilogy, including the '97 SE. Personally, I'm partial to the Dark Jedi's set. I think you can torrent this from MySpleen. There are much fewer choices for the '97SE than the OOT.

As far as original packaging goes, I think there were a couple of versions of Five Star set with different covers (I very well could be wrong) and if I remember from the pictures I have seen they were all less than perfect looking. You can find some pretty good covers around here, my suggestion would be to find the ones you like best and to print your own set. There are plenty of cover designed specifically for the 97 SE sets.

Thanks Guys! I appreciate the help very much. It seems like I might finally have a sollution to my problem. I'm going to look into Dark Jedi's SE DVD set.

Funny thing is, I LOVE myspleen! Its my favorite torrent site. I guess I must have overlooked this version of the SE trilogy.

And C3PX, thanks for the tips on the covers. I found a couple that should fit my needs perfectly! Hell I even found some liner cards.

(On a side note: I'm making a little project for a friend of mine. I'm going to take all of the versions of the trilogy and put them into one big box set. My friend is a bit of a film history buff as well. In fact he thinks Wookie Groomer's Split Screen Trilogy is a work of genius as it holds Lucas accountable for his creation. When its all said and done, this box set should look pretty snazzy. I'll be sure to post pics.)

Thanks Again Guys. All the best!

You're gonna need a shelf if you want to collect all the different versions of the trilogy.

I have:

Dr. Gonzo's DE LD transfer 4 discs
Moth3r's PAL set 3 discs
Dr. M's Reinventing the Wheel set 3 discs
Editdroid's transfer 3 discs
OCP's Classic Editions 3 discs plus 1 for version 2.0 of ANH
Darth Editious SE ANH version 1.0 and 3.0
Wookie Groomer's split screen set 3 discs
Deleted Magic
Building Empire
Returning to Jedi PAL dual layer and SL and NTSC SL

and if you include the official releases, you're looking at about 30 discs. And if you include the rare stuff by Baby Hum, your talking about a 50 disc set.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

I've got a few of the sets you mention on your list. Although I'd like to get more of the Baby Hum releases. I'll admit I'm a SW dvd junkie.

On a related note, I have a question for you and everyone else here. I've always considered the Edit Droid Trilogy to be my personal favorite. Which version of the OT do you feel is the best?

Never saw it myself but allegedly the single layer 97se by 'LOOK' was actually better than that 5 Star dvd9 version.

I had the 5 star set but sold it again because the quality sucks (being dvd9 doesn't add quality in this case). I had the "original" factory pressed bootleg bought on ebay from someone in Hong Kong. It has a DTS track but the quality is just so bad (audio volume going up and down in the middle of a scene, stuff like that). It's no use looking for this set unless you don't want to watch it but want it as a Star Wars item on your shelf.
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

I think OCP did a great job as a hybrid. His version 2.0 of Star Wars is great.
Darth Editious did incredible work to make the Special Edition more palatable, and correct things that are to this day are not fixed.

As far as LD transfers are concerned, I like Moth3r's PAL and Dr M's NTSC conversion of it.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a Dark Jedi release of the '97 SE Trilogy set. I assume that they're on myspleen.org?

If so, could someone send me an invite code or, if they're not on myspleen, could someone give me a hand finding working download links?

Cheers!

The 1997 Special Edition 5 Star DVD set looks BEST on a CRT television.  If you're trying to watch it on a Widescreen LCD or LED you are going to be disappointed.

Having the Laserdiscs and a player are probably your best option for the 1997 SE.

Unless of course you own a 35mm projector and prints of the films.

People are currently working on getting an archive project of these films in to full swing, although, patience is going to be needed as I don't see it coming to fruition for quite some time as it's NOT as popular as the OT is.

I believe this is the wrong section of the forum for this.  If it could be moved to it's proper place it might generate more discussion for the OP.
