Anyone else who is having trouble burning this? About 2/3 through I get an error in Nero saying that it failed reading data?

it will not duplicate or even read in my dvd burner. so much for promising to pif it if i can't even watch it on my dvd player without my player saying it's corrupt. it keeps returning me to the main menu. The audio is pretty good. I never thought super 8 looks so awful thank god I never bought a projector or 8mm reels. the quality is close to starkillers 77 bootleg in places better others worse.

the quality of derann film prints is supposed to be really good if you can track one down for less than a 1000.00 dollars. full feature versions of both star wars and jedi have shown up on ebay before. never empire strikes back impossible to find.

on there website they still have jedi if you have 700.00 dollars.

i have seen 8mm flat prints of all three films complete feature show up on ebay as well. they did not sell because they were not scope. the guy selling them for cheap and they never appeared again. I could have bought each for between 25.00 to 50.00 dollars. I have seen very rare variations of the ken films also a 16mm test production reel black and white silent empire strikes back. There have even been a couple of french releases on 8mm in cinemascope, I even saw a ken films star wars one. as far as I now no such thing exited. also the mexico 8mm star wars. and of course krieg der sterne the cut german release of star wars and empire.

single 35mm reels of star wars appear time to time. one on there now is faded to pink color. I have also seen pieces of 70mm reels or film cels cut from 70mm reels show up once or twice.

I am still kicking my own ass for not bying from star wars to jedi for 150.00, as it was a low fade lpp print. and i lost the auction for the unused revenge of the jedi national screen service trailer.

A corrupted version appears to have made its way onto usenet, so if you try to get it off of alt.binaries, make sure it's the one labeled "new menu" (that is apparently the correct one - I don't know, I haven't downloaded it myself). Of the dozen or so originals I sent out, I haven't heard any complaints. If someone is pif-ing the corrupt one, that would be, er, unfortunate.

8mm can be excellent - these prints obviously weren't, and I traded off graininess for brightness and color. I imagine one of those anamorphic 8mm prints would look considerably better, particularly with a better (i.e., rank wet-gate) transfer. Mine's made with a WorkPrinter (www.moviestuff.tv), so it's scratches and all - but at least it's frame-by-frame.

I haven't read about any problems regarding the usenet posting. I know Mallwalker posted some files that he found were different, but I made my post files from the disc I received from Puggo (straight from the disc, not from the HD). Is anyone having problems with an already burned disc that they made from my posted files? The disc I got from Puggo plays just fine.

For the record, I've never said the files MoveAlong posted are corrupt. And I'm not saying it now.
I said they're different than some newer files on the disc boba feta sent me.
I posted the differing files for insane completists who like to collect every version.

So, if I understand correctly, the first alt.binaries posting of PE was slightly different than the original, but still worked, and then later, another version was posted with the addendum "newer menu", which fixed that and was actually identical to the original? For some reason, I seem to remember someone having trouble with the original version that was posted, and that being the reason for the "newer menu" version (although it wasn't really "newer", it actually was the original).

Well.. I'm confused. All I know is I made no changes to the original disc sent to me by Puggo and the discs I sent out.

Files MoveAlong posted from the disc Puggo sent:
; 51200 12:26.35 2006-12-10 VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.BUP

; 5353472 12:26.35 2006-12-10 VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.VOB

Files I posted from the disc boba sent:

; 51200 13:23.37 2007-01-06 VTS_01_0.BUP

Different dates (newer), different size for the VOB, and different SFV checksums for all three.

boba, do you think it might be possible that whichever software you used to copy the disc Puggo sent
could have changed the files even though it wasn't your intention ?

Puggo, my post files were made directly from your lightscribed dvd (the original). I even re-created the disc from those RAR files and tested it (I try to do that every time). It worked fine. The .sfv file I posted was created directly from your lightscribed dvd. I have not heard of anyone having any problem with my post files, either here or on absw.

I believe you! Honest! My memory clearly being faulty, I'm just trying to reconstruct why there were two versions posted, and why one was called "newer menu".

OK here's what I've discovered - apparently DVDShrink doesn't like the file size of the original vob's to be anything less than .99 gig. Consequently in it's wisdom to 'copy' the disk it's seen fit to resize the vobs to fit within these dimensions and restructured the iso to suit. So what I initially thought was a 1 to 1 copy was in fact nothing of the sort. Because of this I'm guessing it's introduced issues with some dvd drives not reading the disc properly, probably percieving an 'illegal' vob structure. While this does not seem to be the case on any of the drives I've tried, I'm still willing to ship replacement discs to any persons affected.

http://www.bobafeta.com/misc/comparison.jpg

Moral of the story: don't use cheap software for a one to one copy.

If anyone needs a replacement disc because of this fiasco, PM me and I'll sort you out.

My apologies.

Boba Feta - You should use DVD Decryptor for copying discs. It's perfect, from what I understand.

Puggo/Boba Feta - This set is really amazing. Thanks for putting it together. Watching ESB on here is like watching an entirely different cut of the movie.

Better still, use ImgBurn. Same author as DVD Decrypter, but still being developed because it doesn't mess with CSS. Perfect for making exact copies of discs (both CDs and DVDs) that don't have any CSS to begin with.

well, this is going to be awesome once i check them out..

i'm really digging all the lo-fi releases (like the vinyl restoration
of the story of star wars).....

ok, if there isn't a copy of 'return of the jedi' out there..

how about recreating one???? (or faking it)..

i'm going to have a lot of source material soon (laserdisc etc),
but i could also go back and the a vhs deck/tapes etc , because
the source would already be at a lower quality to work with..
or maybe it would be better to go from higher-> lower quality..

use some filters, etc.......actually i should probably get some
pan and scan versions, and use those as a base for jedi..

i wonder if the very first laser discs/ced/vhs were preserved?

anyways, just throwing out ideas, while i kill time waiting for these..

keep up the good work..

(and yes, i'm totally serious about doing this), i mean i like
the revisited versions, and the purist editions etc.......but actually
am starting to prefer the much lower quality versions now..

the lower the better..

I loved the Puggo edition. Very interesting how they cut out some of the most important plot points to get them to that length.
I have all 3 movies on CED and I've been meaning to transfer them. I know there are one or two skips in ANH and ROTJ, but I haven't watched them in a loooooooong time so I'm not entirely sure about their condition. I just don't have the proper cables to connect my CED player to the computer at the moment.

hi bobocop,
hope it works out, i'd definitely be interested in seeing it..

if they are standard jacks, don't you need a capture board, or card
to connect them? or is that what you meant..or does the ced player
use different kinds of output cables...

were there any versions of star wars shown on airplanes?
i know those versions are editted down also..

avi conversion has been made...(no quality loss)..

i will be posting the torrent in awhile..
i have about 5 star wars - revisted ones going
on now, and they have preference...

as i'm sure only a handful of people will care
to get this..

in fact, it would probably be better to put this
on a newsgroup (i don't know how to yet)..
or on rapidshare (i have an account there).

by the way, both SW:ANH, and ESB were awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
