I think most PAL 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen movies have a picture resolution of 720 x 432. But a differs a bit (430-440) and it's not alsways 2.35:1 but sometimes 2.40:1.
In avisynth you can crop and resize Star Wars like this:
crop(0,124,0,-126)
Lanczos4resize(720,432)
addborders(0,72,0,72)
(Since the non-anamorphic video res is about 720 x 326 resizing to 720 x 434 may be more accurate (borders should be 71))
Edit: if you want to use a sharpening filter use it before you add the borders to avoid this weird white line around the edges of the image. also if you change the contrast or anythin do it before you add borders.
