I suppose this is just me coming from my circumcised perspective, but I never saw an uncircumcised penis until a few months ago when I got curious about circumcision and looked it up on wikipedia. And, honestly, I just think it looks weird. I'm a bit biased, obviously, but, in lieu of this topic popping up, I went back to wikipedia, and there was a picture of a foreskin that completely covered the glans, and I swear it looked like Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors!

I'm sorry. That probably came off as derogatory to those with intact penises, and I'm sure if I had missed the infant circumcision thing, I probably wouldn't get it done now because just reading about circumcision gives the willies. But from my bias, it just looks weird to me.

Of course every one in bias on the subject. And of course it looks weird when it is not what you see everyday. Nobody ever says that the statue of David's penis looks weird, it is uncircumcised (ironically). That is typically what an uncircumcised guy looks like. If you ever go to Greece or Rome you will see the same thing on statues everywhere. So from what I have heard, and from what I read on wikipedia, the only real valid reason for practicing modern day circumcision (other than for religion) is purely cosmetic.

Honestly, I never thought about it before, but I suppose those statues would be uncircumcised. I guess I've never looked carefully enough at the package on David to really notice whether he had a foreskin or not.

If you had seen the real thing you would notice, it is huge (talking about the statue here, I just realized in the context of this conversation this could really be taken in some very humorous ways).

Heh, yeah, that could be interpreted the wrong way, but, in case you haven't noticed, this thread has had no shortage of puns in it. ^_~

Can we start a new topic? How about why the Republicans think they are god approved. I never understood why they thought something intangible such as god would say they approve of them. Doesn't he love everybody? Why would he pick one group of his children as his favorite?

I guess Democrats also think they are God approved (well, the ones who are religious ofcourse). Anyway, I think you should keep church and state seperate.

Edit: That's funny by the way, I heard last week on the news officially all congressmen believe in God. Statistically speaking that's almost impossibly if congress reflects society. But is true in the US it's bad for you career when you openly admit you don't believe in God?

And not a lot of people know that the idea of separation of church and state was first suggested by Pope Gregory the Great.

One reason is that many Democrats have thrown the whole "God approved" label as far away from them as they could. They seem to actively cater to the atheist crowd. There is a delicate balance that should be maintained on religious neutrality. Many Democrats have been extremely hostile to religion. Freedom of religion does not mean you have freedom from ever having to see anything even remotely related to religion.

As for the entire US congress professing belief in God, the vast majority of the US population does believe in God in some form as well. The cynic in me then says that its a vote getting ploy to get the most votes. The non-cynic says that its just that the people who are elected happen to all believe in God. I think that true athiests are very rare, at least in my experiences. Most people who call themselves athiests that I have talked to are actually agnostic.

Of course there is nothing wrong with that question Sean. What Number 20 said about Democrats aiming at the atheist crowd may be true. It is true that the Republicans aim at the Christian crowd for the most part. They don't literally claim to be God approved, it is more that they uphold traditional Christian beliefs. Such as being opposed to abortion (which is not a solely theistic stance) and being against gay marriage, and freedom to practice religion to name a few. Religious people will traditionally be Republican because the Republicans are interested in protecting the interests of religious people. Not because God comes down and gives them his stamp of approval. It is common sense really, you are going to vote for the guy who holds similar viewpoints to your own. Really when it comes down to it, if a voter is smart they will look at the person and his views and decide from there, rather than voting for him because he is in the Republican party. This is pretty ignorant, and yes, a lot of religious people fall into this trap.

The thing is atheists are such a small minority-why the dumbos are catering to them--I don't know--

I'm watching the Documentary Jesus Camp to understand conservatives. I've seen parts before and it is scary.

I watched about the first ten minutes of that video, Sean, and I just wanna say, don't let that video speak for all Christians out there. There are plenty of perfectly ordinary ones, and that video happens to document the crazy ones.

Thankfully my church isn't like that. Maybe it's because I'm Catholic.

Oh I know that it's just the conservatives that bother me such as the Evangelicals. I love it when she call Harry Potter a Warlock. He isn't a Warlock he is a wizard. Warlocks are like dark wizards and witches.

Well, I'm somewhat conservative (more of a right-leaning moderate, really), but I'm just not crazy like those people.

So in other words, I'm religious, and I'm (semi)right, but I'm not part of the religious right. Does that make sense?

I guess so. You're not going to try to burn me because many of my friends are Pagans and Wicca right? Also I kind of believe in reincarnation.

Sean, you are kind of going about this the wrong way, watching stupid films like Jesus camp. If you really want to understand conservative then try a non biased source. Even when you say not so much Christians but "Evangelicals", do you even understand what evangelicals are and what a broad range of groups that categorizes? You mentioned that your family was formerly Jehovah's witnesses, JWs are some of the creepiest people I have ever met. If you take JW to equal typical Christian you are going to have a skewed view of all Christians. You mentioned some woman saying Harry Potter was a warlock, probably she was very anti HP. Well I know a good deal of evangelical Christians who are big fans of Harry Potter, those people who are so quick to condemn HP know very little about the books. I find it funny that nobody condemned Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but Harry Potter gets all sorts of flak while both display witchcraft in a harmless way. I think the world has a very warped view of Christians these days because you have so many dolts running around condemning things like Harry Potter in the name of Christ. Poor bastard who is doing this has probably never even picket up a Bible (or he is hell bent on never touching anything other than the KJV) and has a completely twisted view of theology. It is very unfortunate for Christians everywhere that there are so many religious fanatics that run around passing judgment on everyone and everything. If they would look at the source material for Christianity, they would see that judging others is condemned. I don't blame you and others for having the opinions you do about Christianity given the example you have had. But watch out for biased sources like Jesus Camp that are bent on making Christians look like a bunch of creepy cultists.
