R.C. But you also have to decide on the format, right?

G.L. In terms of what?

R.C.Do you say, "Dammit, Steven, do it in digital," and he says, "Dammit, George, I?m doing it on film"?

G.L. Pretty much.

R.C.Who wins?

G.L. He?ll win. He?s the director. The great thing about working with Steven is that we don?t have agendas. We want to make the best movie possible, I want him to be happy. If he he wants to shoot it on film and cut it on a Movieola... Hey, he?s got a great editor. Michael Kahn can cut faster on a Movieola than anybody can cut on an Avid. And I don?t really care. But I do tell him, 'This is your chance to play with this and experiment with it and blame it all on me'—say, ?He made me do it.? And then you can go back to film if you want. But he has relented after all these years to maybe cutting it digitally. We?ll see what happens.

George is trying his best to get that film shot digitally. If it is shot digitally George will be more in control of the editing, and that would not be a good thing.

I'm cautiously excited. George burned us all on the prequels and it will be hard to win that trust back. Fortunately this is a Spielberg film starring Harrison Ford, so that's two against one.

I'm not sure how you necessarily figure that. Just because George wants it to be shot on a medium he prefers doesn't mean he'll have any more control over the editing than he would if it were shot on film. Spielberg would still have control over who edits his film, and, at this stage in his career, I'm sure he has right to final cut that even the studio wouldn't override.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Quite frankly Michael Kahn will be calling the shots with Spielberg, so stylistically the film is in good hands. With Marshall & Kennedy producing, Lucas has little to do other than raise the money for it and negotiate the deals with the studio, in this case Paramount.

He has some artistic control over the storyline, but Spielberg isn't afraid to tell Lucas when something stinks.

I have the utmost confidence that this picture will please longtime fans.

Now, onto other business. Douglas Slocombe retired after Last Crusade, so this film is being shot by Kaminski.

what look would you like? Would you like it to fit with the rest of the films, or prefer a look similar to Private Ryan or Munich? Spielberg and Kaminski have been using a bleached, colourless palette for a while now, apart from Catch Me If You Can. What look would suit Indy?

LOL, the CGI whip idea is ridiculous. I'm glad Harrison Ford is having none of it.

As far as the look goes... I think it would be best if they tried to make it look like the previous films. I mean, yeah, they have these really nice cameras that can do lovely cinematography... But a bleached-out Indy (ala Minority Report or Saving Private Ryan) would be jarring, I think.

I never thought this movie would ever get out of development hell... But after Superman did, everything is possible.

What worries me is:

On August 8, 2006, Lucas told Empire magazine:

"I discovered a McGuffin. I told the guys about it, and they were a little dubious about it, but it’s the best one we’ve ever found… Unfortunately, it was a little too ‘connected’ for the others. They were afraid of what the critics would think. They said, 'Can’t we do it with a different McGuffin? Can’t we do this?' and I said 'No.' So we pottered around with that for a couple of years. And then Harrison really wanted to do it and Steve said, 'Okay.' I said, 'We’ll have to go back to that original McGuffin and take out the offending parts of it and we’ll still use that area of the supernatural to deal with it."

It's a plot based on an idea GL had, and people balked at it... I'm not sure this is going to be good...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Wow. That whip story was crazy. When did these new dumbass safety laws come into effect where an actor can't even carry a whip?

I've got extremely mixed feelings about this. The Indy series was just as important to me as Star Wars, and given the schlock we've gotten from GL, ie: the trilogy who's name shall not be spoken over the last several years, I hate to see this happen in a way.

Then on the flip side, it's MORE Indy. I will wait for reviews and see it ONLY if they're positive. I mean reviews well after the film opens.

What if it was set in modern day? Since Indy and Henry Sr. drank from the cup of life, they could pull a Green Mile and have them aging very slowly. Not that I think this would happen, but it would be a very interesting plot twist. Perhaps more interesting than Soviets-under-Kruschev as the bad guys.

Maybe in a star-powered crossover, Indiana Jones and Robert Langdon can debate about whether or not the Holy Grail really was a cup.

I've wondered about the cup drinking since I first saw Last Crusade. It is an interesting premise. Too bad Denholm Elliot isn't still around. He was classic in that movie.

Nah, he was classic in 'Raiders' but a total fool in 'Last Crusade.'

The cup thing is often debated on Indiana Jones fansites. What the Knight says is basically the price of immortality is the cup cannot pass the seal. Now, Indy and Henry Sr. don't take the cup past the seal, but Elsa does, causing the cataclysmic implosion of the temple. So, are they immortal since they didn't take it past the seal, or do her actions cost them everlasting life? I'm thinking the latter.

As far as villains go, they are shooting in and around LA as well as the jungle, and have apparently scouted San Francisco. The new Indiana Jones video game in the works has sequences in San Francisco with the Chinese Triads as the villains. Recently, there has been NO NEWS at all of this game, which is kind of weird.

It's got me to thinking that they are somehow related, meaning we could see Chinese Triads going after Indy, maybe a bunch of Lao Che's goons, I don't know.

I just hope the movie isn't too on the nose, and that it stays away from constantly winking at the audience. Each sequel had it's nods to the others, to be sure, but I don't want to see things like "Oh, there's the idol, hey, check it out - there's the Ark." Hopefully it's sentimental in the right spots and not too cheesy.

I always thought Indy and his dad couldn't have been immortal because they left the temple. As the Knight said, the price for immortality was that they had to remain there forever. The other Knight left and died of extreme old age, which is what ADM touched on. Indy and his dad aren't immortal because they drank from the grail, but they could be aging a lot slower... Hence the possibility of an Indy movie in the present day. That would be an interesting idea, but I don't know how well it could be pulled off.

I'm not sure if it counts, but didn't Young Indy establish that Indy had aged perfectly normally, as he was an old man narrating the events in the '90s?

Not exactly. What the Knght said is that the price of immortality is the Grail cannot pass beyond the seal. Doesn't mean someone couldn't drink from the cup and leave. But Elsa crosses the seal, and there you have it.

Which has been conveniently excised from versions released after their initial television run.

Take a look at 'Mystery Of The Blues.' Ford has a great looking Indy in that episode, which takes place in the 1950's.

Really? I wasn't sure if they were still considered canon or not. For some reason, I thought it was announced that they were. I don't know. I don't keep up.

Indiana Jones 4 is going to suck, just like the Star Wars prequels.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

to me, the film seemed to imply that you had to continue to drink from the grail to remain immortal. That's why the knight's brothers died when they left. That would also require one who wishes to stay immortal to at least visit the temple periodically to continue drinking from it, as the grail itself cannot leave. This would also explain why the last knight was so old.

Filmmaking is not what it was in the 70's/80's- everything has a different feel to it. Really quick cuts, really glossy feel, and mediocre music for the most part.

I think that unless they make a conscious effort to do it in the old style of the previous ones (and if John Williams can deliver the type of score that he used to be able to) it will be a flop.

Yes. That's true.

What isn't true is that we're not talking about White Chicks. This is Indiana Jones - with Michael Kahn editing, as he has with the previous 3 installments. Take a look at Spielberg's recent films and I think you know what to expect. Apart from 1941, the man does not direct shit.

C'mon, let's have a little optimism here.
