Perhaps instead of using this scene to telegraph Vader's realization that "Skywalker" blew up the Death Star, the scene can create an ambigious ending where Vader, the ONLY survivor, of the Death Star has to report the bad news to the emperor.

Officer: “Lord Vader, we picked up your distress signal on our long range scans. Is...is it true about the battle station?”
Vader: “It is indeed. Prepare for my arrival.”
Officer: “Lord Vader...shall we transmit the data to the emperor?”
Vader: “No…I will deliver it to the emperor myself.”
Officer: ”As you wish, Lord Vader.”

Maybe this can work? I think using Coruscant would work better too rather than using the Executor, since the big reveal in "Empire" would be dimished. The whole idea of a short range fighter getting back to the capital may seem far fetched but hey in terms of drama, suspension of disbelief can work wonders in getting a point across, plus Coruscant makes for a better image in the distance.

Maybe even adding in Star Destroyers surrounding the planet also adds to the image.
