And those last two posts are exactly why I don't own a Mac of my own, though I would love to have one. Price and compatibility are the only two places I see PC beating mac. And unfortuanately for Apple, those to things are extremely important. I think eventually I will get a Mac desktop and keep a PC laptop. Then I will have the best of both worlds.

I am using a 450 G4 powermac from 1999, and the thing still runs great! DVD studio pro is a dog, and rendering takes forever, but email, internet, music, pictures, it all runs great.

I do understand people's concerns of needing certain software (although this is taken care of through a program called parallels) and/or the price of the mac hardware, but there are a lot of people who just want a computer to do simple things and have it do it steadily over the course of a few years and I think a mac does that for you.

Nanner split: have you tried Bits on wheels? I find that to be a good torrent program.

I'm an IT guy and received a full copy of Vista Business Editon. I loaded it on one of my laptops at home and so far I'm very undecided on it. I like the interface, but it will definitely take some getting used to. A lot of settings, etc, are in different places now and so far I've just had a little bit of time to tinker with it.

I will say that I'm more than a little disappointed with it's hardware and software compatibility. Much of my software is not compatible with it (including my Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and Roxio 6). I also went to plug in one of my CD printers today and found that it wasn't compatible (Casio CW-50 thermal printer). I haven't even tested out most of my hardware yet and I've only loaded a few of my apps on it, but I'm sure I'll find more incompatibilities. Very disappointing..... and I am very much a Microsoft supporter (I'm NOT a Mac fan at all!).

The software incompatibilities are just plain stupid. I can understand my tiny virus programme was imcompatible but a huge programme like symantec antivirus??? That's just wrong.

I really don't have anything to say on the Mac vs PC debate, as I've not had any experience with a Mac since... er... 1993ish..

As for Vista, from what I've seen, it's a massive resource hog and has some kinks yet to be worked out. Windows XP has worked fine for me since 2002 and I probably won't be using Vista until this late-2005 model computer dies.

Also, I mainly use my PC for gaming and video editing, and it's even more of a pain in the ass to find Mac-compatible games.

Not to mention the fact that the only good Mac-compatible torrent client is Azureus, which I hate.

If you don't like Azureus (believe me, I hear you), Transmission on OS X is very nice. I've been using it for about 6 months now.

My two cents--

Compatibly issues------Enough said

Security----I recently re-installed XP (hence me not being on the fourms for a week or so,) To pre-SP1 stats---I get REALLY good Torrent speeds. I don't want to know what Vista does to this------

Main thing--gaming--After reading several articles about DirectX 10, and the whole debacle with hardware and upgrading---As an advid computer gamer, I AM going to have to upgrade soon. That sucks. Either by a new comp, or upgrade...

I'm still mostly happy on Win2k. I've needed XP a time or two, but for the most part, 2k has satisfied my every need and I compute for a living as well as for a hobby.

I've believed for a long time that 2K Pro is the best commercially available OS without question. We're still mostly 2K Pro where I work (still have some low-end workstations) and it fits the bill nicely. The only thing about it is the forced compatibility issues, like IE7. Won't work on it. Problems like that will get bigger going forward and IE7 becomes a requirement.

I'm a huge Win2K fan. Been using that on my Windows boxes since it was released and it's been ridiculously stable, even before the service packs. I still use it on my web dev test boxes. I have a retail copy I won in a contest MS held back when 2K was released.

Great OS. When I eventually get a Mac Pro and install Parallels for Windows, 2K will be the version I install.

Won't FireFox 2.0 suffice?

Win2K user here as well. The only reason I upgraded from W98 was because I needed to access files larger than 2GB. I could care less about XP and especially Vista (snort). Our laptop came with XP, and it's okay. Nothing I need to upgrade for.

The only time I needed XP was to try out Adobe Premiere Pro. Turns out the video stabilizing filter worked fine in Premiere, so that's what's on my desktop.

Of course, the last OS I paid for was Win3.11.

I probably will not upgrade to vista, becuse I would need to upgrade my computer. For that trouble and money I think I would rather have a mac. Now that they can run windows I am a lot less hesitant about switching over to the mac side. If I wanted to do some research on the different macs out there where would be the best place to start. If someone can point me in the right direction it would be great.

anyway here are my two cents

I have used both OSX and XP extensively, i owned a ibook for year on loan from my school, and i used them all throughout highschool. prett ymuch anytime i learned something with IT it was on a Mac. at home i still use a PC. why i just like the PC lay out. the only thing that i stole was the dock, which i have on my computer using stardock.

just in aug i bought a brandnew sony laptop, and it seems to me, to be just as good if not better then any of the apple laptops i have seen, that fall in the 1500 range. its like 4 pounds has 5 hours of batt life, 1.8 duo core. and a hybride graphics card. it is the prefect computer for me if i am doing school work gaming or just searching the internet. but last year when i was at UBC i had the misfortune of using a PC for my C programing class. and i can tell you right now if you plan on doing anything programing/graphics related go mac all the way, maybe it was cause i had always used macs for that sort of thing, or that PCs are just bad at it, but I just didnt feel comfortable at all using my PC when doing all the stuff. so there is it, they both have there places for me. p.s. I HATE SAFARIE, i donno why i just really really dislike that program.

one other thing, as funny as the switch commercials are i find themto be a pretty big low blow in the world of marketing. i woulda thought apple would have been above making fun of pc's directly with such biased ads. but meh such is the world, i wonder when if ever microsoft will launch a counter commercail line.

Yes, actually I'm evaluating it for use in our network. I love FF.

Problem is legacy applications that ONLY work with IE.

I'm waiting for the Microsoft response... "If you piss us off we'll stop selling you Microsoft Office for Mac and then you'll really be screwed. Oh, and we won't bail you out...AGAIN". Wind up with even less market share.

Not defending MS in anyway, because i know they have their share of flaws/problems. But you do realize that MS has stock in Apple, and its my understanding that part of the agreement is that MS can use (take) 'features/programs' (ie the crazy application switching thing that Mac has). Now i dont know the specifics of it, and im sure that its slightly more complicated than we want this so we'll use it (and ill give you that even when they take that stuff MS doesnt always implement it as well) but that said, i dont think its fair to say MS 'rips off' apple when there is an agreement (technology sharing agreement would be the best term i think, but not sure how much sharing it is) between the two.

with that said, I remember the days when people with a mac had to pull the light and mirror show to be able to connect to windows file shares. maybe this has changed in recent years, but the point is you cant forget that even if it is better now (and once i disable 'idiot' (simple) file sharing on xp i generally have no connection problems unless its with someone using idiot file sharing or windows me) it wasnt always that. The simple file sharing in windows is one of the prime examples of MS trying to 'dumb' things down for the average user that doesnt know anything and making it harder on those of use who actually know what we are doing (which seems to be most people on this board, and probably everyone in this thread)

Please dont take any of this the wrong way, but I feel (and this is a generalization) that mac users tend to overlook any imperfections with the mac and point out all those (perceived and real) with the pc. Mind you most pc users do this too. The guy who works for me uses both on a regular basis and he probably is the most impartial opinion i've ever heard. he has pros and cons of both.

part of the problem microsoft has is that since they are so mainstream, and the compatibility is a big part of their appeal, when the release a new OS its excpected to be backwards compatible. So if they do a complete rewrite, starting from the ground up, and working on all the 'security issues' and other problems then they will loose that compatibility with previous versions of software (i read some article detailing this). I personally think they should bite the bullet and start fresh (keep it simple, and not put all this bloatware in) and it would help the product in the long run, making it much faster and reliable.

i could probably go on with more specifics, but ill say just 2 final things. Windows ME was NOT a predecessor to Windows XP (as someone seemed to imply in an earlier post). ME came out at the same time as XP and pretty sure it was more of an upgrade to 98, sort of a middle ground from going direct to XP. Also it was a total failure and from my few experiences with it had trouble with everything, I'm pretty sure microsoft stopped supporting it.

finally, i find it totally ironic that in order to get your product certified or tested with MS XP (whichever the lowest 'certification' is) you need to not have unnecessary reboots, yet nearly everything that MS itself puts out requires a reboot.

ps. I agree Win2K is a fine peice of software.

I had to take Vista off my computer. Nero wouldn't install even after I downloaded the Vista-certified update. Besides that, ASPI drivers didn't seem to want to install, and half the freeware video programs I use either wouldn't work or plugins for them wouldn't work. Of course all this came after I posted earlier about not having any problems....

I officially have an opinion on Vista now--it sucks.

My mother bought herself a new laptop computer today for her new job, and with it a satelite internet card. Unfortunately, the card doesn't realize that Windows Vista is a newer version than 98SE. Wonderful job with compatibility there, Microsoft. Worse still, it's a slow and buggy mess. I can't even install FireFox on it for God knows what reason.

I can't even concern myself with Vista because, like most people, I lack the funds to update ALL of my hardware to run the thing.

The nice thing is, the program I'm in at my technical school has a nice little hidden web-site where anyone in the program has a direct link to download Vista for free and legal (some computer workers association runs it)...or actually any version of Windows from 95 on.

I finally get the opportunity to not pirate an OS and I can't even use the new one....damn.

That sounds interesting...

I once collected OSs, it was an odd hobby, I even had a computer with a boot menu and as many OSs as I could get on it. I had windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, OS 7, OS 8, and OS 9 all on the same system. The computer was just a tinkering machine and was pretty much rendered useless for any serious work, one change of something in one OS would often totally screw up another. Later I discovered Virtual PC for Windows, which was great because then I could add Windows 3.1 (a personal favorite, since it was on my first PC), ultimately Virtual PC ruined this pastime of mine because you could load as many OSs into it you as you wanted and it was no longer a challenge. I still have my OS collection though.
