Idea & Info: The Challenge of Re-Editing a Crap Flick

Hey guys,

I just had a rather interesting thought pop into my head. There’s a lot of really talented amateur editors in this place. and they’ve done a good job of taking good and average films, and turning them into excellent films. But I think it’d be interesting to see what could be done with truly bad, bad films. So I propose a little competition for the folks here. Why not have some sort of competition where everybody who enters tackles the same flick, the same source material, to see who can do the best job of turning it into something watchable.

I propose…

The Uwe Boll Cook-Off!

In short, one of Boll’s films would be chosen, and everybody interested would take a crack at reediting the film into something not completely nausea-inducing. Does this sound interesting to anyone else?

I'm always in support of a contest. I still don't know beans about editing, but lots of the kool kats here do. You want a real challenge, host a contest about editing the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Probably impossible, but I'd like to see someone recut "Manos:The Hands of Fate" into a decent scary movie.

Eh, but that's the thing. EVERYBODY does Star Wars. The Holiday Special is the one exception, but everybody and anybody does 5 different SW reedits. It'd just be neat to see different material...just for a change.

Take a look at IMDB's Bottom 100:

Come on, you know you want to take a crack at Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 or From Justin to Kelly...or better yet, Glitter.

Oh, and FYI: Alone in the Dark 2 has been announced for production.

Actually, I have ideas for From Justin to Kelly. Nothing to actually make it a better movie, per se, but to make it funnier.

Yes, I have seen it. I was ill and stayed home from school and couldn't find the remote. Stop your laughing.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I think alone in the dark would be a good choice.

Or Garbage Pail Kids

Or A night to dismember

Or Undead-

Or Any of the Lou ferigno Hercules movies.....

Re: uwe boll edits - it sounds like a good challenge, but i think you really need to have a love for the thing you're editing. Nobody [it seems] likes boll films. The idea of the contest sounds great nonetheless.

I like House of the Dead. but that beacuse it's some dire. I did make a re-edit of Van Dammes Street Fighter that was pretty entertaining! i shortened it to about 3 mins and put it on DVD (which i recently FOUND by the way!) and it is an improvment!

If i get time, i'll try and rip it and upload it somewhere.

I did have an idea about re-editing the US version of Godzilla. had pretty mean ideas for that!

I had the idea a while ago of trying to edit Candyman 3: Day Of The Dead into a good movie, more in line with the first one, which is one of my favourite horror films of all time. (Not massively keen on the second one either, but at least it tries to be an honest-to-goodness sequel).

The idea would be to add Philip Glass score, maybe some Tony Todd voiceover from the Final Destination films (just so his every other word wasn't "Be my victim" again) and try and make it look a bit classier than the DTV shitefest it is.

But there's things even a fan edit can't cover, like shrill lead characters, awful acting, unconvincing effects... in the end, the film's best swept under the carpet and forgotten.

What about superman 4? At least somebody out there might appreciate it.....there are fans of that movie believe it or not.....not me of course

my vote for the film is the american godzilla. everyone can agree that movie was balls, but it had potential to not be balls.
I'm always looking to trade my edits, if you don't want to get them from a torrent. PM or e-mail!

The problem is that too many crap films are crap for things that fan editing can't solve, such as bad acting, poor plot, etc. Some films, such as the Star Wars prequels are edited quite a bit because they have the potential to be a good film, with some editing.

I've actually considered this. The problem is that it would mean taking the 68 min. film and in the end having something barely over 20 minutes. The good thing about the film is that it is kind of creepy (mainly because it looks like a snuff film).

Maybe if I ever try this, I'll post about it here.

Jaws The Revenge. Now, that would be a challenge.

As a matter of fact: not every crap flick can be saved or is even worth being thought about a fanedit from it.
But sometimes you just raise your eyebrows and look at another so couragous one:
Scaperat has been making a fanedit out of DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. You have my full respect, even for trying to make something watchable out of this.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

I actually had an almost complete fanedit of MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE before my computer crashed and lost it.

- I removed many pointless scenes (the night scene of the two teenagers making out, one of the Master's bride finding Mike tied and kissing and slapping him, etc) as well as many endless pauses. I re-arranged some scenes for a more coherent story, mainly the climax, resulting in a more tense finale as the Master and his wives search for the family.

- I stripped the sound completely, added a new soundtrack and planning to re-dub it. I used mainly music from the TV series Angel and lesser known scores from Buffy as well as some other pieces from composer Rob Duncan. The result was a creepy atmosphere with a more professional approach than the damn jazz muzak!

- I started re-coloring the picture for a more pleasing aesthetic, as well as re-incorporating 2 missing shots found only on the MST3k version of the movie. Added opening credits on some toned down driving sequences and some montage-free end titles.

- Made a script for dubbing in many filler lines explaining some plot holes. (ex: the 2 cops are not useless anymore: when they get in their car, they call for backup to check the area in the morning.)

- Added widescreen bars (I am usually against this, but in the case of Manos, re-framing some shots is a good thing!)

- Created the cover for a planned special edition including the original uncut feature film, my recut version, the MST3k audio track, sketches and the documentary Hotel Torgo.

Manos: The Hands of Fate - Approved By The Master

It's a real shame it was deleted...but I'll start over soon.
(By the way, I think the running time was 30 minutes after re-editing!)
