OS X also requires fairly regular updates, but reboots aren't required as often, and when they are, you only need to do it once.

It's also nice that OS X runs well on older hardware. You could drop a few hundred on a used dual G4 tower and have a fairly capable machine to get your feet wet. If you decide you like it, get rid of it in six months and buy a newer one.

I'm actually selling my dual 2.5Ghz G5 and moving to a Mac Pro if you're interested
