Burning Dual-layer DVDs

Author
Time
Hi, I have just finished the first DVD of my little project. The original project size was 10(!!!)GB, so I had to shrink it in DVD Shrink to fit to a DVD9 (!!!). That's why I've decided that I will burn it to a DVD9 medium. The problem is that I have never done this. Do you have any tips for me ? Like what about the "layer break thing" ?
What medium would you advise me to use ? What speed should I burn ? What program should I use for burning ? Etc...
And what about the common dual-layer myths like "every second disc gives an error during burning" ?

It's best to make an ISO using pgcedit and burn the ISO with imgburn. Don't use nero to burn dvd files directly to a dvd9.
In pgcedit make sure "options > input/output > when saving, leave at least 32k of space between ifo and bup" is marked. In pgcedit you can also set the layer break.
When burning with imgburn you can mark the layer break as seamless.

Edit: There's a very good guide at videohelp (I don't know the link). If you can't find it and need it I can mail it to you (if you PM me you address).

Any reason you shouldn't use Nero? I've burned several projects with it and haven't had a problem yet (though to be fair I've only viewed two of them).

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Nero will burn the disc fine that's not the problem (and I use it for all my SL discs). But nero needs one layer (and I forgot which one) to be larger. So if you placed your carefully selected layerbreak at a "wrong" place nero will choose it's own layerbreak position. And usually it will be at places you don't like. With imgburn you can select the option of seamless layerbreak (the layerbreak will not be marked as layerbreak and the dvdplayer will play it seamless).

Edit: If you don't really care about the layerbreak Nero is fine ofcourse.

First of all : Thanks.
Second : Any tips about placement of the layer break ?

In pgcedit you can place them at a chapter point. I usually place them at a chapter point so both layers are about the same size. You probably don't want to place the chapter break in the middle of a moving scene. Otherwise you my notice a slight stutter during playback. If you select seamless layerbreak in imgburn it doesn't really matter I think (although it depends on your dvd player a bit).

So I have destroyed my first dual layer DVD :-( I did it like you wrote, when I created the ISO in PGCEdit, it showed me a table of possible layer breaks, I have chosen the first one, then it created the ISO, which I burned using IMGBurn, the writing finished successfully, but verification failed, I tried the DVD on my DVD player, and it freezes in that section.
What have I done wrong ? Or did I simply have "bad luck" ?

BTW I am using "seamless branching" in my project. How "seamless" will the transitions be if one scene is on layer 0, the second on layer1, the next on layer 0 , etc... ?

I also had trouble burning my first DL discs. It's difficult to say if you did something wrong. What type of media did you use and at what speed did you burn it?

How did you create the "seamless" branching? Did you make a chapter playlist using dvd-lab? If so it will not be seamless (even if you would burn to a SL disc). Does the branching play seamless on your compter? Why do you think the branching will go from layer to layer, did you try to make it that way?

Media used : Verbatim, speed 2,4x.

I used DVDLabPro. The "movie" consists of Star Wars I theatrical re-edit, followed by deleted scenes from disc 2, followed by slovak opening crawl. I have created 3 chapter playlists in DVDLabPro, one is theatrical version with english crawl, second is theatrical version with slovak crawl and the third is the extended version.
I have used this method several times before on my SL projects and they work fine (at least on my player)

Verbatim +r is all I ever use. Sorry, I don't know why your burn failed or what you can do about it to make the next one succesfull. It could have been just bad luck.

I also experimented with playlists in dvd-lab but on the scene changes I always had slight pauses when playing back in my dvd player.

How many possibilities for the layerbreak did you have? I always select one somewhere in the middle to make both layers about the same size.

So I'll buy new media and try it again.

I'm not sure how many possibilities did I have, but a LOT, cause the table had also a scrollbar

So I did buy new media, this time only Verbatim DVD-R DL.
When I tried to burn the ISO omage with IMGBurn, I got a funny error message, something like "Cannot set layer break on DVD-R when burning using DAO mode ". I tried to change the mode to "incremental", but after this step imgburn ignored my layer break, and asked me where should it put it. When I selected any of the possibilities I always ended with the same error message (even when I was in incremental mode).
Then I deleted the ISO and re-created it in PGCEdit, but this time I have selected DVD-R in the pulldown menu in PGCEdit's burn window. It didn't help, the same error message in IMGBurn. Any ideas what went wrong ? Or IMGBurn supports only "plus" DL media ?

Finally, I've burnt it with Nero. And the result is funny, the transitions are seamless in the term that you don't SEE it (no video freeze), but a couple of second before the "layer switch" my player makes terrible sounds, like a chainsaw in Doom 3 But at least the video doesn't freeze.

I know this isnt the right place but I didnt want to start a new thread just for this question. I downloaded Magix Pro 11 and something funny started happening on my computer. Now everytime I put a DVD or CD in to my drive it opens the "explore" window not the "which programe would you like to use" window. CDs I can still use by opening media player however I cant seem to watch any DVDs! I uninstalld the software but I'm still having the same problem. HELP.
