Excellent job on this, Pugs! This is an absolute must have!

I just watched the Empire reels and something stuck out at me. I had another look and I believe I have found something quite significant. Check out these screen caps:

2006 GOUT:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_1_06DVD.jpg

Same image from the 1985 CAV Laser:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_1_85LD.jpg

And the same image from the Super 8 reel:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_1_S8.jpg

Another frame from the GOUT as the Emperor fades in:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_2_06DVD.jpg

Same frame from the '85 Laser:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_2_85LD.jpg

And the Super 8 reel:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_2_S8.jpg

The above shot on the Super 8 reel corresponds with reports regarding the 70mm cut of TESB. In the 70mm version, the Emperor's hologram doesn't fade in, just like the Super 8 reel.

Another example:

GOUT DVD:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DISH1_GOUT.jpg

Same frame from the '85 Laser:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DISH1_1985LD.jpg

And the same frame from the Super 8:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DISH1_S8.jpg

Again, this corresponds to the 70mm cut.

I believe this is the first confirmed visual evidence of alternate footage existing within one of the films!

Also, this section of Michael Matessino's 70mm list that appeared in Film Score Monthly also appears in the Super 8 reel:

In the final scene, there is no tracked music from "Yoda and the Force". The scene begins with the first establishing shot of the rebel fleet, then cuts inside the Falcon for Lando to say, "Luke, we're ready for take-off" (but a different take of this was used). After Luke says (voice over), "Good luck, Lando" the scene cuts to inside the rebel cruiser where Luke says, "I'll meet you at the rendezvous, " etc. Not in this version are two more establishing shots of the fleet and an interim effects shot over which Lando says, "When we find Jabba the Hutt and that bounty hunter we'll contact you."

Add all of this to the numerous (and already known) differences in the Super 8 audio and this becomes even more intriguing.

Fascinating!

First off, great job, Puggo! I've finished watching this set and it was very well done.

Interesting that they got the super8 reels from the 70mm set. Hopefully someday the 70mm cut will come available.

Another somewhat interesting thing is that in ESB, they cut the "Luke, I am your Father" line. Does anyone know if these films come out before or at the same time as the theatrical releases? Or did they just not want to spoil it for those who might of not seen the theatrical film yet?

Top effort Starkiller! I knew it would take someone with a keener eye than mine to find such minor irregularities. Keep up the good work, I'm sure there'll be even more differences to be found by the intrepid explorer.

Also, my apologies on the lax effort on completing the cover, I'm a little overextended on the work front, but hope to have it completed this weekend.

Cheers.

It must be your lucky day daveytod. In celebration of the completion of this project and in keeping of the spirit of the board, I've decided to undertake a ten person mailout. The next 10 people to pm me will receive free copies of the project.

I am downunder, but I'll still mail anywhere in the world.

Cheers.

Thanks to BF for sending me one.
I have 5 blanks left so I will send a puggo to the first 5 in Oz that want one, send me an e-mail and your address.
Then make sure *you* remember to pay it forward when you receive it.

Yeah, I got a copy from BF, too, so I suppose I should PIF! I'm in Western Canada, so I'll PIF fellow Canadians at the top of the list, and other North Americans thereafter. Please send me e-mail, rather than PM!

Thanks, and I'd like such a list too. I can accumulate them on the website as they materialize. Now I need to go back and find that thread that had an initial - presumably partial - list....

Jambe did a little research in this field. Combined with what we know and what The Starkiller has found I guess we have a list that looks something like this:

Star Wars:

Introductory Crawl is Spoken.

ESB:

Video:
The Emporer does not fade in in his communique with Vader.
Millenium Falcon Satellite dish not visible with Luke on weather vane.

Audio
- Han saying 'watch this' as he tries to jump to hyperspace in the asteriod field. Although the dialogue hasn't changed different emphasis are put on certain words."
- Luke - "I don't pick up any life readings" - Different take
- Han - "I'm going back" - Different take
- More rebels calls of 'retreat' when Walkers attack
- Leia "They're getting closer [star destroyers] - Different take - she stutters it twice
- Cloud Car pilots - Different line - will confirm with actual line asap.
- Leia "I know where Luke is" is replaced by "we must go back" or something similar
- C3P0 - new line just before "I thought that hairy beast would be the end of me" - It's something like "I'm glad we are back together"
- The frigate at the end looks decidedly different - i will have to check this.
Cloud City Security - "Any aggressive move will not be tollerated!"
Cloud Cit Security - "Permission granted to land on platform 3-2-7. Any deviattion will" - Han cuts of comms.
Leia - "Lando, hurry up, we've got company!" (as Lando is rescuing Luke from the weathervane)
C3P0- "Get away from there, you don't know how to fix the hyperdrive!

The circle is now complete. Once again Boba, you have outdid yourself. This cover will make a excellent addition on the Star Wars DVD Shelf. Many thanks.

This disc seems like it could be very beneficial to a reconstruction of the 70mm prints of ESB. I'm gonna start moving some of the camparison pics and such to the appropriate thread.

The ESB reels were apparently released on June 1, 1980, which is a mere 11 days after opening day. TESB opened exclusively in 70mm, which may explain why that cut would have been used on the Super 8 reels.

I think there are a lot more than that. I'm going to go break out the fine-toothed comb and go over it.

So Sluggo, do you think that this is indeed the 70mm cut on these Super 8 reels? I just don't want to jump the gun, but it certainly looks that way. This is very exciting.

I'll post anything else I find in that other thread.

Well, it does have a lot in common with the Story of the Empire Strikes Back album. Many of the alternate takes are there in both, including the many of Carrie Fisher on the Falcon. The odds seem to be good that both are from the 70mm. The beauty of the 8mm reels is now we can see visual differences as well. Of course, since it his heavily edited, not always razor sharp on the details and is pan and scan, we need to be extra careful when relying on it for differences.

Interesting discoveries. I wonder then if any of these alternate lines appeared in the 70mm mixes? Its obviously based from an earlier pre-35mm mix of the film, as a drastic re-mix such as this would not be performed for a super-8 retail version. I wonder if some of this are from an even earlier work-in-progress mix that pre-dates the 70mm one...

I pretty new to the boards, but I have been waiting for this release for a while. Thanks a lot Puggo. Is this release going to be posted via rapidshare at all? just curious. I didnt see mention of it on fanedited.

This is a very cool project! I just jumped on the torrent.
I saw the preview-clips on your site and the quality of the capture seems really good.
would have been cool if the rounded corners of the frames had been preserved

Cheers!
