Ogg, I know this is off-topic but do you have any of the other AL-TVs? I'm trying to track down good copies of the older ones. I'd ask via PM but I'm in the middle of emptying my overflooded inbox.

I found my VHS tapes for the 1999 and 2003 specials and will eventually put those up (both are very nice SP quality). Maybe someone out there has good copies of the others.

Ogg: I have divx files for 1988 (#5), 2003 (#9) and 2006 (#10). I don't think that I'll ever see a better version of #5 but the more recent ones such as the 1999 one you mention would be good to see.

Hmm... some quite interesting things in that thread. If nothing else, there's the possibility of finding another excellent lost scene from the film.

I won't expect anything from that anonymous poster until something concrete actually happens, though. What I wonder is that if they're going to go ahead with this, what will Richard Williams' role be? On the one hand he seems to want nothing to do with the Thief nowadays (since he's working on a new film, apparently, and his mind is elsewhere) - on the other hand, I simply can't imagine an authentic, official restoration being done without Williams' involvement and approval.

Do you know more about this than you're telling us, Ogg?

Well, I'm in the process of contacting as many specialty DVD labels I can. So far, I've emailed Criterion, Anchor Bay, Unearthed Films, and Fantoma. Blue Underground's email doesn't seem to work. As for other stuff, I'm waiting to find out from some others.

Would be cool if Criterion got interested. It seems to be right down their alley. They could do something similar to what they did with Mr Arkadin. Release both existing versions, then compile a recobbled cut as the main feature.

I think a Criterion would only happen if the film were restored and completed into a final theatrical re-release version. There's no doubt they'd do a fantastic job on it, though.

However, I did get a reply from one label. It may be difficult to wrangle rights from the Weinsteins (they aren't fond of licensing out), but given the treatment they've given the film, it can't mean much to the brothers. This label seems interested, though!

I heard as much. But a "Thief" release would be a much harder job than "Rock & Rule", if for the simple reason that "Rock & Rule" was already a finished film.

Ogg, did you mention that "Holy Grail of Animation" discussion that recently took place among animation fans in your letters to the companies? There was quite a strong showing for "Thief" over there, which seems to suggest that more and more people are hearing about this.

Also, do you think it would help if any of us emailed some of these companies as well?

Esn, if you could email that link to them (I already sent out a letter to each, with more technical stuff), that would be nice. Best to be brief and just give a short explanation on why you want it from them. Remember: These are companies that have no control over anything unless they get a license to deal with the movie. It's no one's fault if the rights can't be obtained.

I'm sort of worried that contacting this many labels could start some confusion (if all of them are asking about the title), but five DVD labels all asking about the same movie will help exposure... I hope.

Hey,

I was watching the Princess and the Cobbler version a while back, and I'm convinced that Ed E. Carroll's voice work for the Thief amounts simply to that stupid laugh that's added in when he does that dance during King Nod's speech. (Perhaps some of the other wheezing and coughing that's ADDED into the Calvert version, too, but I'm not sure about that...)

Ed E. Carroll, judging by his IMDB listing, is an American character actor, who mostly did bit parts in TV shows, made-for-TV movies, and low-grade films during the 80s. Since Carroll is American, I highly doubt that he would have done voice work on the Williams version; except for Vincent Price, everybody else in Williams' cast is British and/or generally worked in Britain. However, the Calvert voice cast was indeed comprised of Americans and/or talent that worked primarily in America. Ed E. Carroll seems to fall into that category.

As for who did the original wheezing and gasping, Patrick and I have mulled over the possibility that it might be Richard Williams himself...but don't quote me on that.

I always doubted that Ed E. Carroll was part of the original Williams production as many of his whines and laughing are exclusively in the Calvert cut. I noticed that in addition to the scene that you mentioned where the Thief laughs during King Nod's speech, the same voice can be heard as the Thief is traveling through the pipes of the castle earlier in the movie. As he gets stuck in the pipes, he whines in the Calvert cut while there is none in the original workprint soundtrack. The wheezing and coughing effects in the original workprint also sound very different from the added Thief audio in the Calvert cut.
IMDB lists someone named Ken Nordine as having done the voice of the Thief, which I highly doubt.

Nordine had no involvement. Famed "jazz poet" Ken Nordine (who was the voice of the old Levi's ads of the 70s) was mistakenly identified as the voice of the Thief somewhere, because someone confused Jonathan Winters' voice for his. I e-mailed Ken Nordine and he told me that he wasn't involved at all.

I can still imagine those wheezes coming from Richard Williams' mouth. To me, they sound very similar in timbre and pitch to his voice. But hey, what do I know? I could be incredibly wrong...
