You can try YesAsia. Or, if PAL is not a problem for you, Amazon.co.uk.

Dark Jedi,

What method do you use to convert 4:3 to 16:9? Is it the same used in ADigitalMan's guide?

Does anyone here know an alternative to that? Thanks!

Actually ADM's guide is what got me into this stuff in the first place. I had investigated a few years ago, and found it way too convoluted to do this. Now the programs are so much better.
I think ADM converts to anamorphic by doing an AVI (compressed via lossless huffyuv) from an AVISynth script in VirtualDubMod. Then using this AVI in TMPGEnc to create the Mpeg-2 file. This was the way I was doing it, until I discovered that you can feed the AVISynth script straight into TMPGEnc (which saves a lot of time and disk space).

LeoneNut,
sorry if this has been mentioned,if so I missed it,but is this project going to be 4:3 letterbox,or 16:9 anamorphic?
hopefully 16:9,but if not, thats cool,I can convert it for my 62' widescreen.
also will it be DD 2.0 or DD 5.1?
thanks again, hopefully the soundtracks will get into your hands very soon.

Yes everything will be 16:9 anamorphic, and the soundtrack will be DD 2.0 Surround. Love to do a 5.1 track but don't quite have the know how yet.

http://www.dtsac3.com/
There is software and guides on that site that show you how to do it.
I use Plogue Bidule software to create a six channel wave file (fr,fl,c,rr,rl,lfe) out of a stereo source. Next I use a program called BeSweet to extract the 6 channel wave file into 6 separate wave files (fr,fl,c,rr,rl,lfe). Then, I use a program called SurCode DTS to load up all those individual wav files in the proper channel arrangement, so that it will encode them into a dts wave file. You can either create 44.1 (cd format) or 48khz (dvd format).
You can also use various templates inside of plogue bidule to get different outcomes on how your sound will be.

So, using the script fed straight into TMPGEnc, you won't have ~90 GB avi files floating around? Is that why it's better?

I have a project where I may need to do some 4:3>16:9 upconverting, as well as some cropping (so that everything has the same aspect ratio), and I am not very technically skilled here yet. (All I have is Womble and DVD-Lab Pro). I definitely prefer GUI software to scripting. I am just trying to figure out the easiest way to do this part of the process. Thanks for any help.

Maybe this comment would be better made on in the help forum. Sorry to get off-topic.

Yeah that's the main reason, I once had an almost 200GB uncompressed avi file of a 2 hour movie

I believe there is a GUI program called DVD Rebuilder (which dark_jedi mentioned earlier), that will convert to anamorphic for you without AVISynth knowledge. I remember people mentioning it in a thread about making the 2006 Star Wars DVDs anamorphic, have a search for it. If that doesn't work I can send you some example AVISynth scripts to do it, ADM pretty much nails it in his guide though.

Anyway back on topic.... yeah that Legend project I was doing.....still progressing....

Zeromancer - Thanks for the info, will check it out. Wonder if it converts matrixed surround information properly.

Update:
Have put this on hold for the last week, was involved in a car accident a couple of days ago. I'm ok apart from some minor back pains. The car is a total wreck and unrepairable. On the flipside I have this project to keep me busy and keep my mind from worrying about insurance payouts, buying a new car etc.

I'm pretty sure I've missed some more shots from the AC and EC, and will be doing some more detailed comparisons at the weekend. I have smoothed over the cracks in the soundtrack in a lot of places. Hopefully the whole thing seems a bit more professional
Will hopefully have version 1 finshed very soon. Once I have this locked down, I will start on creating version 2 with the alternate intro and Faerie Dance scene.

Hey - get well soon! Don't overdue anything. Glad you weren't injured seriously. Good luck with the insurance!

Just a quick update I have finished editing Version 1. There are some interlacing problems, which are present on the Director's cut, and Womble appears to show them even more while editing. I was able to replace most of the affected footage with stuff from the other cuts.
Will do a test burn and watch on my TV at some point.

Have already started on an edit of the alternative 4 goblins intro, kind of messes up the credits a bit, but not too bad. Have replaced shots of the goblins riding with shots shown later in the film of all four goblins. Not a lot of footage from the main titles is in the alternative intro.
So far it goes:
1) Main titles from DC up until we see Blix's feet.
2) Alternate Intro up until Blix's feet, cutting out any footage already in the main titles
3) Shot of Blix's feet panning up to his face from DC.
4) Alternate Into up until goblins ride off, with footage replaced from the DC of Blix reacting to the light ahead (some credits here)
5) Shot of goblin's riding replaced with alternate shots from the DC, with extra shots (with credits) of the Great Tree from the DC
6) Rest of Alternate Intro
7) When integrated with the rest of the film will fade to the sun and Lili after Darkness' line "innocence"

Oh yeah I'm feeling much better now, still waiting on my insurance to get sorted though...

Sounds great Leone_Nut. Good luck with your insurance. Any chance of posting the new intro on You Tube, when it's done? How much longer is the new intro compared to the DC intro. Are we getting nearer the 125 min?

Thanks

I might well post the new intro at some point, it's a still in a very rough state. The audio needs sorting, making the music seem more seamless.

I reckon we might just go beyond the 125 min mark, I will check tonight and report back.

Making very slow progress at the moment, a bit like writer's block, call it editor's block if you will

I definitely will be getting back to this at full steam in the next week or so, and finish it off.

I was a bit surprised when watching my Version 1 edit on my TV a few days ago. A number of audio problems: syncing, pops, cracks etc were highlighted to me, especially in the last half of the film. A casual viewer probably wouldn't notice, but I have to fix them as best I can.

I will say though the movie seems more complete with the added footage. If I find time, I may post some clips of more edited parts on YouTube.

I really love this hobby and have a number of movies I want to re-edit, more on that later

I've always said that this movie could have been a classic. They had a masterpiece on their hands and blew it. I'm sure this edit will go a long way in proving how much better this film could have been. Thanx so much for doing this.

That's great news - what is the difference between Version 1 and Version 2? I mean, which changes are in which?

Version 1 is the Director's Cut with as much material from the two theatrical cuts (US and European) added back as possible, see second page for a detailed list of additions (about 5 minutes worth)

Version 2 is the same, but with the Darkness/Blix Intro removed and the Four Goblins Intro put in it's place, and the storyboarded Faerie Dance restored too. Think of this as a kind of Workprint version.

I watched Version 1 last night again on my TV and it is still out of sync.
It's weird as it plays in perfect sync within Womble but the compiled DVD via DVD Lab isn't.
Hopefully I'll figure it out....

I fixed the sync problem by adding a delay via an option in DVD Lab Pro which works just fine.

Will try and get Version 2 finished in the next few nights
