Geez, with a $600 price tag, Sony is still taking a loss in console sales? How much money would they have to charge for systems to break even on hardware?

And that reminds me of a situation in Twilight Princess. It might even be Nintendo's in-joke to companies taking a hit for the hardware. The lantern salesman in the game gives you a lantern for free, admitting that he takes a loss on the lanterns because the profit is in selling oil refills for it!

Screw that I DONT hate Sony,I friggin LOVE my PS3,and the Blu-ray looks fantastic, the comments made here just totally crack me up,there probably all made by people that dont have and cant afford one.

I also have the Wii,and totally love that too,I have the original Xbox, and believe it or not,I like that system as well, but I have NO interest at this point in the Xbox 360.

DJ,
You have stated this before and I reiterate, I do not hate Sony at all and don't see why anyone would think it is cool to do so. It is just obvious and proven history that they have made several bad business decisions, just like Microsoft & Nintendo, but yet they keep doing the same thing (trying to force their own format on people) whereas the others learn and do something else. Plus, I DO make enough money to buy a PS3 right now, my brother even offered to sell me one he bought because he could not sell it and he knew i could afford it, I told him no and he had to take it back to the store. I could own a PS3 right now, but I just am not impressed with their current game catalog nor do I want to commit to any one format just yet in the HD home media genre.

Although Blu-ray is the better format, I think HD-DVD will win based on it's name. Even the least tech savvy person knows HD means High Definition, whereas they'll see Blu-ray and go Huh?. Just my opinion though.

You may be onto something there. I mentioned Blu-ray to my girlfriend, and my work colleagues, with replies along the lines of "huh?", "blue what?", and "you're smoking what now?". The only people who recognise the name are my other nerd friends. Not that I ever brought up HD-DVD, but they all seem to have an idea of high definition being, um, more defined than before...

i suggest we all give Sony the benefit of the doubt before making assumptions. if they end up failing, then its obvious they deserve it for not looking into what their consumers actually want. but if they do end up succeeding i dont see why there is any reason to hate on them?

after all they did ship their 1 million consoles like they said they would by the end of decemeber. this is almost twice the amount that xbox360 had shipped by the end of 2005. and i never recall people badmouthing Microsoft this much.

for some reason it just seems to be "cool" these days to hate Sony.
i dunno why.

They didn't say they'd ship 1 million. They said they'd ship 4 million. Worldwide. At launch. And what did they do? They shipped 400,000. To North America and Japan only. Way to go guys! Best. Launch. Ever.

From what I've seen, there seems to be two types of people that have HD systems. The first is the audiophiles/techincally savvy types who do know what blu-ray is, and every, or most every acronym there is. They've extensively researched everything and pretty much know exactly what they want before they ever set foot in the store to buy anything. No, these types won't be bothered at all by the name blu-ray or HD-DVD.

The others are the people who want an HDTV and home theatre as a status symbol and to show off to their friends. These people are usually older, and more affluent. They don't know much about a high-def setup, and do minimal research before buying. They buy based on which model in the store display looks best to them, and/or brand name. These are the types who will walk into the store and get confused at the blu-ray name, and skip over it in favor of the name they understand, HD-DVD. So I think the name issue is going to hurt blu-ray. Will it cause it to fail? No, I don't think so. There are many other factors that will go into play in the end. And to be fair, Blu-Ray is not a "Sony only" format. Its gotten labeled as such, but there are many companies that are supporting Blu-Ray, and it isn't another Sony-proprietary technology. But the issue that it is becoming increasingly labeled as a Sony proprietary technology can really hurt blu-ray.

I'm not making a prediction, but I could see that even if Blu-Ray gets accepted as the standard format, many people will still call it HD-DVD because thats what they understand and relate to.

Redbaron, I'm pretty sure you are wrong about the 4 million. This is a quote from an IGN PS3 Article: "However, Karraker reasserted Sony's intention to "remain focused on having one million PS3s in the pipeline by December 31, 2006."" Article. I think you might be thinking of how Nintendo said they would have 4 million Wii's shipped by the end of 2006, which they came pretty close to because they are at 4,479,500 units sold, worldwide. Here is a nice site to see total sales of each console: click me

someone else has already pointed out that your wrong about the shipment thing.

second it is cool for people to hate Sony these days. There is so much proof on this forum in particular for that.

1st reason is the comment you just made about their shipment. tell me something, since it is obvious that you own your own electronics manufacturer, which console ended up making their initial target? here's a clue. fuckin none of them.

every console had a shortage. but because your on top of facts like this its no wonder you never brought that up. rather it was just easier for you jump down Sony's throat because they've released a console that a) you cannot afford or b) have no use for. either way that doesnt make it an inferior product.

but im sure if you were in charge of the company you would definatly be able to handle shortages like that right?
i mean after all, rather than sending all your ideas to Sony about how they can improve their business strategy your here talking to us. why?

Nintendo did make their initial target. They said they were shipping 1 million units to North America and 400,000 units, pretty sure on that number, to Japan. I don't remember how many they said they were shipping to Europe, but I'm almost positive that they did make their initial target.

Yeah, don't show fear (or annoyance) he can smell it. You have to just laugh at his jokes and let him know you are no intimidated by him. However, I am afraid you have already shown your annoyance towards him and he will never forget. So in other words, your marked for life. Good luck.

And about the PS hating thing. It has nothing to do with being cool to hate PS. Just because a bunch of us are of the same opinion on this matter all the Sony fanboys get their panties in a knot. If Sony suddenly takes off and becomes a popular system then it is not going to hurt me. I really don't care, but because I make the prediction that I think it is in trouble you guys get all pissy and say it is only because I cannot afford it. If you like the PS3 then I am happy for you. I still like to look at the situation as a whole and to makes guesses as to what is going to happen. For the last several years this has been predictable. Sony would be at the top, followed by the Xbox, and Nintendo would hang in there because of fan loyalty and there licensed characters. This time things are different and the boxing match is getting exciting again. Just because I am not rooting for your favorite boxer doesn't mean he is going to loose, and it doesn't mean I only hate him because it is the cool thing to do. I take it the ones of you who are claiming we are only hating it because it is cool are still in High School perhaps? Well, once you get out of High School you do things not just because they are cool, but because they are reasonable or practical, or because they are what you want to do. You no longer go out and buy a $80 dollar pair of blue jeans because they will make you look cool. Now is the part where I remind you that a good number of us are not in High School any longer and don't really care if it is cool to hate Sony or not. I promise you, even if it was extremely uncool to hate Sony, I would still be of the same mindset. I really don't think Sony is going to do so well this round.

More or less agree with what you said, except I don't think it is necessarily about hating Sony. Only reason I say this is because in your last sentence you say, "I really don't think Sony is going to do so well this round." That doesn't have anything to do with hating, you could just not be behind Sony or excited for the PS3 because you don't think it will do so well. But your analogy to being in high school and buying the expensive clothes was good.

Just read on IGN's PS3 site that Famitsu, the Japanese gaming magazine, reported that Sony only managed to sell 466,716 PS3 units from it's 11/11 launch to the end of 2006. Meanwhile Nintendo sold 989,118 units from it's 12/2 launch to the end of 2006, that was 22 days after the PS3 launch and with 29 days till the end of the year. And Nintendo has managed to sell 1,135,671 units as of 1/7/07. Article So Sony is having a tough time in Japan, which is where they normally do really well.

And this is an interesting little tidbit from the last paragragh of the article: "The PS3, on the other hand, has been readily available since the New Year began. We were able to find a used 60 gig unit today at a major retail for $50 less than the new selling price. This would suggest that the lack of sales is due to more than just supply constraints."

im not a Sony fanboy whatsoever. everyone knows that i think consoles are a complete waste of money and are horrible gaming systems. but thats beyond the point. i just dont like people saying, "Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft are going to do bad this year" based on poor evidence. ie. they had shortages at launch, or the system is too expensive, or they have shitty launch games. point is nobody can make a proper argument at this point in time. 2 of the 3 consoles are only 2 months old. therefore there is no reason to state an opinion at this point in time, for the simple fact that you do not have enough proof to back this up, nor even make a semi intelligible argument.

if you want to say which console you think is going to do bad, without proper proof, thats what i consider hating.
because your not proving anything nor are you backing anything up, your simply stating a negative opinion on something just because you can.

make sense now?

ahh yes and im not hating on consoles. ive stated many times before why they are inferior to me? noticed how i said to me and not to everyone.

Yes, it is too early to call any system a failure, but I think that one can say that these systems have problems that might cause it to fail in the long run. Of course, these problems can also be overcome. The PS2 had issues at launch, and it overcame them and became a great success. But other systems have had similar issues at launch, and never could overcome them, leading to their failure.

i totally agree with that statement. thats why im saying only time will tell.

to be perfectly honest im leaning towards the fact that the Wii will definatly have the upper hand. But from what ive seen at my work and talked to customers about, the majority of them anyway seem to be graphics whores for the most part, or into more adult themed gaming (see gears of war). Im thinking that will be the only downfall of the Wii. Now although they cant get past the fact of not having much eye candy i think its crucial for them to break this mould of catering towards more family oriented games and start to shake it up a little.

for example, look at Resident Evil 4 for the gamecube. Anyone who has played this game knows how much ass it kicked. It was a different spin on the survival horror genre and it worked extremely well. It even looked damn good on the system too. I'm not saying that Nintendo should start pulling out Grand Theft Auto games or things of the sort, im just saying that perhaps by catering towards more mature themed games, they would be able to keep a broader audience.

I would totally love to see Nintendo come out on top, but im just not sure if its going to have the thunder to keep gamers interested for the consoles 4 to 6 year life cycle.

People say they love great graphics, which is only partially true. Ultimately, it is games that sell the system. If awesome graphics were all it took, the Atari Lynx, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, and Neo-Geo would of been huge successes. These systems were sold on their incredible graphics for their time, but they were expensive and couldn't come up with games to attract the masses. So they didn't sell and lesser systems, graphically speaking, won out.

One of the reasons the Gamecube didn't get crushed by the PS2 or Xbox was the fact that they avoided this market and concentrated on the children's market, that was mostly ignored by Sony and Microsoft. But yes, they had non-children's games, its just that Nintendo has a reputation for not going after this market. The question is will they continue this, or will they see the opportunity to take on Sony in their niche market?

I would totally love to see Nintendo come out on top, but im just not sure if its going to have the thunder to keep gamers interested for the consoles 4 to 6 year life cycle.

This is my concern as well for the Wii. Is the controller scheme going to catch on beyond Wii Sports or the swordfights in Zelda. Time will tell. I hope it does, but you never know.

But at the same time, one of the reasons the Gamecube came in with the lowester market share last generation is that Microsoft payed publishers NOT to port some games to the Gamecube (because the X-Box has a higher graphical advantage over the PS2 than it does over the GC)... So you could also argue that had Microsoft not done that, third party support--including some of the more mature games--may have kept the Gamecube afloat longer.

Honestly, I don't really care. I've had just as much fun with my GC as I have with my X-Box over the past five years, but the marketplace tends to lean towards the more mature games.

On an entirely different note, who else thinks THIS GAME would be the perfect Star Wars title to port to the Wii?

I really don't think Sony is going to do so well this round.

im not a Sony fanboy whatsoever. everyone knows that i think consoles are a complete waste of money and are horrible gaming systems. but thats beyond the point. i just dont like people saying, "Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft are going to do bad this year" based on poor evidence. ie. they had shortages at launch, or the system is too expensive, or they have shitty launch games. point is nobody can make a proper argument at this point in time.

I am sorry it is such a sore spot for you, that is quite unfortunate. You see, a lot of us like to make predictions and see how far off we were. Ever made a prediction on a sporting event? You say you bet one team will win, even though the game has not begun yet thus you are basing your opinion on piss poor evidence. It is like that here. At least for my part this is how it is. I know you work at a game store, so I imagine you do get a lot of snotty little preteens saying things like "Sony sucks because it is not Nintendo" and non sense like that. But it is fun to discuss and speculate. Of course none of are feel we know the future, the whole fun of playing this game is trying to guess what the future has in store for these consoles.

To say, "I don't think the PS3 is going to do so well" doesn't need any proof or evidence. I could be wrong in this and it is nice if you come up and say, Oh I don't agree with you, it is going to do well becaused...
I know people are putting down how many consoles ship where and such stuff. The funny thing is that that does not even matter, by next year all of these console will still be on the market and nobody will be mentioning who shipped what the first weeks on the market.

"your simply stating a negative opinion on something just because you can."

Sounds like a personal issue to me. You are on a website that has a reputation of being a bunch of old SW fans who sit around and complain about George Lucas and the special editions. I don't think there is anything wrong with stating a negative opinion. Especially in a thread titled "ANIT-PS3 THREAD" in all caps. As I said about it being a personal issue, don't enter a play station bashing thread if you hate hearing play station bashing. Especially when you have to put up with it all day at work to begin with.
