DVD burner problems

Lately, my burner (an LG something or other) isn't working. It's maybe a year and a half old. It won't copy (it errors out about 2/3 way through the cache process) or burn anymore (again more errors). I borrowed a Sony external burner from a friend and it is giving me the exact same problems. Any ideas what I can do to fix this? Would installing new drivers fix this or ...

My old Sony burner started doing that a few months back, but since I have a new BenQ DL burner, I haven't really tried to get it fixed. At first thought, you might try and see if doing a lens cleaning with one of those cleaning discs helps at all. If not, you might just have to take it in and get it fixed, but buying a new one might be cheaper...

I'm thinking that it is something else. I cleaned the lens of the LG and I still get the same problems. The Sony drive is brand new.

Same problem on two drives sounds like a driver problem.

What operating system do you have? Do you have Nero? Is your LG an external? Did you update your motherboard utilities before that started? Those can screw up burners, on random systems - If you're running Microsoft, you'd switch to their drive controller drivers.

If you have Nero, you can check out your system with Nero Tools. If not, and your OS is compatible with Nero, then I'm positive that you can get the Nero tools on a free download somewhere, or you might have something analagous with your own burner software.

You could check your ASPI layer with ASPICheck. If I recall, there are alternative drivers for external...

My memory isn't very clear on these topics, and I won't have a chance to search out specifics. But CD Freaks forum is the best place to look for answers.
