So yesterday-----At Office Depot, they were selling 50 pack DVD-R and DVD+R. In a rush to buy monitor cleaner-----I grabbed DVD+R.....Now, I know this may be an age old question----and after a test the DVD+R do work for me, but I'd like a general consensus on which is more compatible----I have a Sony player--and it works for that-but I'm worried about friends and family who might have diffrent players-

DVD+R is a more widely excepted and used format than DVD-R. Some players play both so it really depends on the DVD player.

Both play fine in my player. I tend to use Verbatim DVD-Rs for SL, and Verbatim DVD+Rs for DL.

I see..I was really worried last night ;p I read that the Sony "Officially" Endorses the use of +R, which calmed my nerves.

In that case, I might be sticking with only -R

Actually, +R has one compatability advantage - you can set the booktype to "DVD-ROM". Some settop players won't play a disc that has "DVD-R" coded in. (Probably just some old, cranky ones).

I think you need a utility to tell the drive to put that in there, though. CdFreaks forum would be the place to find it. But if your drive was rebadged, it might be difficult to find out the true manufacturer.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

 

Download  shows from Cable DVR (Updated! Yes, it needs a rewrite, but it's worth slogging through, anyway).

This is a good point. The burner is about the most tool for the, um...work we do here. Probably best to make sure you buy a quality burner with both +R and -R capabilities. The same goes for your DVD player. Spend a little more for one that reads PAL and NTSC discs. Definately worth the trouble.

As far as settop players go, I use a Zenith DVB 314 upconverting player. It's the only affordable one (that I know of) that will upconvert DVD over component to 1080i and it does it beautifully. It will also player PAL right out of the box, and can be made Region free through a hack. Though if you have HDMI or DVI on your TV (I don't... only component) I'd suggest the OPPO.

Actually DVD-R plays in a wider range of players, but not by much these days. You will only have problems with older players, and anyone with an xbox - the original xbox (i.e. not the 360) won't recognise a +R disc at all.
