Idea: The Thing (XBox)

I’m certainly not the first one to have this idea, but how about creating a movie using cutscenes and gameplay footage from THE THING (the XBox video game) ? That would be a great sequel to John Carpenter’s classic.

For those who don’t know, the game picks up where the movie left and it is actually good.

There’s even a trailer that could be included on the DVD: simply don’t press start when you load the game and the trailer will start.

I’m sure Daveytod would do a great job with this, as he did with his 24 and Star Wars edits based on video games.

What do you people think?

You could hook the xbox upto a dvd recorder and record it

I'm also aware that there's a PC version of this game, so wouldn't it be easier to extract it from a PC?

Then again, that doesn't give us the gameplay footage to fill the gap between cutscenes.

BTW, this video game can now be found for a really low price (under $10).

Please please someone make this happen!

I would be very interested in this if it were done, I am a big fan of the Carpenter film and there has been many a time I have thought to myself I will buy this game but have never got round to it so I would like to see this if someone gets round to doing it.

unfortunatly, I've got a whole list of games that are more of a priority for me, but anyone with an xbox and a DVD recorder can do this, and I'll give them all the help they need

Alright...since no wants to give it a try, I'm going to do it by myself.

However, I have no idea when it will be completed but it should be soon after Spring Break. I do have the material to capture from the XBox (I have a Hauppage WinTV Tuner) but I need to improve my skills on editing transitions between gameplay footage and cutscenes so that it looks smooth (for both sound and picture).

I'll keep you guys updated...

Wish me luck!

Sorry about the blank post. but have you thought about trying this path for capping the scenes. Modded xbox's are capable of ripping the data onto the hard drive. Once the data is on the xbox hard drive you can then ftp into and transfer the files onto your computer. Once they are on your computer you can then convert the movie files to whatever format you want. An xbox movie file is named .xmv there should be programs out there that can convert it and you would probably lose less quality this way.

I happen to have a modded XBox but I really don't know how to transfer the data onto the drive. Can you be more specific?

If not, I'll simply record the game I play via my TV tuner.

What you would need to do is once the game has been ripped onto the xbox via the ripping program built into most installs on the xbox. Next you would ftp into the xbox and just transfer the the data you just ripped, onto the computer hard drive then just sift through the folders looking for the .xmv files and convert them to a usable computer video format.

or just record as you play....rip from the DVD-r onto your hard drive, then import into Womble to edit away
