Wow, as a huge fan of animation in general, and of Hanna-Barbera in particular (like Disney, and classic Warner, they fed my love of cartoons as a kid), I can't help but feel that part of my childhood has just died.

Rest in Peace Joe Barbera. It'd be a different world for me without your cartoons.

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

There would be no animation on TV today if it wasn't for Hanna Barbera... RIP
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Indeed a sad-day. Kind of strange as I was thinking about the car-tipping ribs the other day. Quite a stable of animation that will be on for generations, I think. RIP.

I was so sad to hear the news the other day. Rest in peace Mr. Barbera. I think the man was a great example of how entertainers and animators really can change the world.

I was never a gigantic fan of Hanna-Barbera cartoons, but I watched them a lot as a child and can easilly appreciate the role they played in animation; for that both men should be remembered.

"Tom & Jerry" was, and always will be, my favorite cartoon of all time. Watching those old shows never gets old.

Tom & Jerry were Hanna-Barbera cartoons?

Yep, Tom & Jerry were, I sure watched alot of them cartoons. I remember that swirling star logo that Hanna-Barbera had.

I admit I took tom and jerry and all the Hanna&Barbera cartoons for granted... probably because I'm so young and not knowledgable about how much impact they had on the industry- still am actually. But I did enjoy them even if I'd usually flip the channel whenever one of those "old" cartoons came on. Now I call them rightfully (I hope) "classic" since I appreciate good old american animation more than the stupid pokemon stuff I got suckererd into wasting life watching.

note that I do love anime, the good stuff anyway.

RIP, Joe Barbera.

An excellent brief history of the Hannah-Barbera partnership:

Thanks. I like reading about legendary animators.

Wow, I always knew some of my fav toons like Dexter and 2 stupid dogs were connected to the old school H&B toons in some way, beyond the brand name, because I'd always catch a homage to the flintstones or jetsons in episodes... but I never knew Barbera himself was actually involved with those shows actively with the likes of Gendy Tartakovsky etc.

Awesome.

Tom and Jerry was more Chuck jones than hanna barbera. they were the release company. you can see similarity's between them and the road runner/ wild e Cayote cartoons from warners.

And yes animation is a dying art form mostly outsourced now at least in japan if not the u.s. as of yet. hand drawn cell animation is nearly dead as well, being replaced by computers. Which makes it all the more important for these classics to be restored for posterity and be left uncut and not censored Like disney and warners have done before.

Hmm, that would make more sense to me. I was never a huge fan of Tom and Jerry, but I always respected the level of animation put into their cartoons. Hanna-Barbera just don't seem to fit that in my mind (perhaps I should actually read their history).

Otherwise, Walt Disney and Chuck Jones were my idols as a child. And, even though I no longer have any desire to be an animator, I still have a lot of respect for their accomplishments. In fact I still seek to emulate the life of Walt Disney quite a bit (minus the cancer hopefully).

The Hanna-Barbera episodes came earlier, and the Chuck Jones episodes came later. It's fairly easy to tell them apart once you know what you're looking for:

-The Chuck Jones episodes have the roaring lion opening that fades into the close-up of Tom's face impersonating the lion.

-The Chuck Jones episodes have a different, less detailed animation style.

-The Chuck Jones episodes are just flat-out not as funny.
