ZigFried's Archival Saga (* unfinished project *)

 (Edited)

I want to contribute something to this community so I’m not a total loser. But Paint Wars was too hard. So…

I’m downloading AVI files of the six Star Wars films in their original DVD form. Once they’re finished, I’ll make MY OWN DVD SET, WITH MY OWN MENUS, CHAPTERS, AND CRAP. No bonus features, no crappy sidescreens. Just the movies, plain and simple. The Archival Editions. And I’ll do the same for the Editdroid OOT versions too.

P.S. I now like all Star Wars, plain and simple. I no longer care about this OOT SE Prequel crap. I like all of them for what they are. Star Wars (all 6 of them) is my favorite movie. I don’t care what you whine about, yada yada, slap slap, bye bye, END OF STORY!@!

P.S.S. Gauntlet Dark Legacy is my favorite game.

P.P.S. This is my favorite thread . . .
. . . until tomorrow when you change your mind and begin yet another new project.

What ever happened with the WMV -> SWF conversions ?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh no. I'm downloading those files as we speak.

And the SWF thing was cancelled because the program I used sucked and there were no freeware converters.

I'll be following this thread with great interest.

Also, I cannot see how what you are proposing will in any way contribute to this community.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Well here's the deal:

I like to watch any version of Star Wars. And I want to make sure the official versions I have are kept safe too. So I'm making this Archival Set to make sure that's certain.

So... why not just make backups of the discs you want to watch, watch those, and put the originals away? Why lose quality by converting the video to AVI and then re-burning to DVD?

(edited for correction of bold tags)

All right, I'll give that a try first. But if that doesn't work, conversion time...

Doesn't it all make perfect sense now? He wants to contribute something (albeit something that seems completely useless) to make himself feel like part of the community.

Why not make up some covers or offer to seed torrents or get involved in a PiF chain? Any of those would probably be more useful to the community than this.

If you really want to do this, you should get the DVDs (not the AVIs), strip the existing menus, and create your own. It still seems like a waste of effort (creating new covers would probably take just as much work and would probably be more rewarding).

No. If you have a DVD burner and the ability to use Google, you have no fucking excuse to convert a DVD to AVI and then back to DVD. Sorry to be so blunt, but come on. If you have a DVD burner, there is no concievable reason to have to convert the DVDs to other file formats.

Except for one problem: The DVDs are COPY PROTECTED. I use Nero, and it CANNOT COPY , say, Episode III. Unless you know of ANOTHER copier, then I might give it a try.

::sigh::

Use Google and find DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

Never mind. I found DVD X Copy. That should work. If not, I'll use the two you mentioned.

DVD X COPY is one of most worse things you can put on your computer....good luck.

Failed. I'm downloading the other two things right now...

They work. Am decrypting and shrinking now.

Of course they work. Good. Now you don't have to keep posting about how you're making backup copies of your DVDs for yourself.

Yes it did work. Now if any of you would like copies of these DVDs, you'll have to PM me about it.

I'm sorry, but...

What happened to the "ZigFried" Menus?

So all you've done is make copies of the retail DVD's?
I think offering copies of the retail DVD's isn't allowed here....

This has got to have been your most ambishous attempt to contribute to the community yet ZigFried. I really liked your idea about converting the DVDs to avi, then converting them back to DVD. Fantastic way to get past the copy protection really. Also, you would have found the quality to be ideal for archiving. Too bad the other members talked you out of this method. Well, good luck on your preservation attempt. I shall be looking forward to seeing how this one ends.

Is this a joke? I really hope so since the quality would be worse than the original and he's not even doing any editing. He's taking straight copies of DVDs that are available at retail and offering them up to anyone that wants them. Hello? Can we say piracy much?

Of course that wasn't a joke! Are you kidding? This project sound awesome! I have never been so excited about a preservation attempt than this one. I must admit I was a little disappointed when he decided to use DVD quality rather than divx, because divx is so much more detailed. You honestly can never match divx quality. It blows old DVD out of the water any day of the week, or the month for that matter. You don't have to explain to me what he is doing. He explains it himself quite clearly. I really hope he goes ahead with his menus. But it sounds like he might have to do away with them inorder that he is able to finish this project. I for one cannot wait. With or without the menus, this is perhaps the finest and most ambishous attempt at film preservation I have ever witnessed!
