Idea: The 1976 crawl

 (Edited)

One of my pet projects has been to put together a rendered version of the 1976 rough cut crawl. The text comes from the revised 4th draft and Marvel’s Star Wars #1. It was fully filmed and attached to the film when Lucas showed a rough cut to some of his friends as well as Fox execs and Marvel Comics artist Roy Thomas. John Williams score still was in production, so this would not have had the famous music attached to it, although I don’t know if there was a temporary bit of music (like Holst) attached to it or not.

Anyway, here’s my files if anyone wants to take a crack at it. Click here. I’m 90 percent comfortable with the design of the Star Wars logo and 99 percent comfortable with the placement of the text. I had some pals offer to to render the thing, but we get busy on this site, so… I’m tossing it out to anyone who wants to take a crack at it.

HI Sluggo

I just tried to download the file through both IE & firefox and when trying to unpack it it says the file is corrupt. Not sure if this is something my end or a problem with the file itself.

Edit. Just tried it again and it looks like each time it is downloading a bit more so it may be that the file hasn't fully uploaded yet.

Let me take a look under the hood...

Slam!

Well, I can't open it either as I'm at work and my work compy won't allow me to install a winrar or anything that will open it. So if no one has any luck, I'll upload all of it tonight when I get home.

Downloading and unpacking worked fine.

It looks really nice =)

Thanks! I'd really like to see this incorporated into a fan edit.

Yup, that's hopefully the plan. Or just an easter egg.

How about putting it into that "virtual lost cut" that was talked about here some time ago? This is the one that would show off someone's creativity by creating or better yet removing special effects from shots, etc. I think it was also suggested to rough up the film in all black & white to make it look like the lost cut.

Yes I know we can't re-create a true lost cut. But this would be just for fun.

I edited a bunch of deleted scenes back onto Star Wars and also took the original edits of certain scenes from Deleted Magic to re-create the "lost cut" to a certain extent. I held off on releasing it because Sluggo was working on this, and I was going to put it at the front. If anyone renders this as an actual video crawl, I'll put it into my edit and I can send it to folks.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

It would be interesting to see a recreated lost cut. We all know it wouldn't be 100% accurate as that isn't possible - but it would be fun. The '76 Star Wars logo is something I'd never seen before. Very interesting.

When I downloaded the file to take a look however... the first thing I thought was: Jambe Davdar presents The Star Wars. Okay he'd probably have a much cooler name, but I guess it would just be cool to see that crawl in a docu-film like Building Empire. I have Deleted Magic of course and love it but only more is to be gained if Jambe decides to one day do a Star Wars one.

I'd like to see Jambe tackle this one as well. I'd also like to see a version edited to closely match the novelization and/or the shooting script. But that's a topic for another time...

Looks good. Where did you get the closeup photo of the original-original crawl? I've never seen that one before!

Where were you in '77?

Two of them were on the Official Site, the other was scanned out of an ILM book.

Ell, have you actually read this thread?

YouSendIt tells me "file not found" -- I'd like to see the elements if they can be posted again. I don't think I can "rebuild" the crawl-- but I'd like to see.

Thank you!

I downloaded it two times, but I hate to report that my computer says the files are corrupt when I try to decompress them.

Is this possible, or is it a problem on my end?

Thank you Throwaway! Very kind-- and happy New Year to you, and Sluggo too!

This is a great idea-- I didn't know these elements existed. I wish I could be the guy to do it, but it's just too big for me. I'll see if I can dig someone up.

This would be the perfect way to open a "rough-cut" fan edit --which is another great idea.
