Man, are you kidding me?! I don't even know what the hell to think about this. On the one hand, I think that Obi has been one of the best posters in the Star Wars forum for the past several months, whatever you think of the current state of that forum. But I always enjoy reading his posts, and I think many of you were totally out of line for giving him such a hard time in the Pearl Harbor thread. Guy expresses a viewpoint and people act like a bunch of idiots (and not in the fun and happy way that I'm used to). But I really don't want to see him leave.

On the other hand, I really wish he hadn't made this "YAGE" thread. Not only does it draw more ridicule, I really don't agree with it. It seems an uncharacteristic move for him, and I think that it's completely sad to throw away several months of community just because of one bad experience in a thread.

EDIT: And Shim. If I recall, Sean posted a similar thread recently, and I would definitely consider him one from the "good ol' days."

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Seconded.

Seriously, if Obi Jeewhyen is leaving (or "YAGEing", as he seems to prefer) because he finds the community here to be overly tolerant of name-calling and insults, how does he expect that to improve matters at all? Obviously the loss is not that great for him that he would stay. So why the "YAGE" thread? I honestly think that if such behaviour is sufficient to have him walk away then he might be happier not coming here any more. But I think it's sad he can't just brush it off and move on. It's Stinky Dinkins and Rob, for crying out loud! Laugh along or ignore it but don't, for goodness' sake, take it personally! That's like a red rag to a bull, man!
Don't you call me a mindless philosopher...!

gaffer ol buddy you misinterpret me. i was refering to the fact that people on this forum are driving away people, good people, and for what a few jokes. that never happened in the good old days. espeically people like Obi who seems like a good poster.

p.s. the good old days were way way back when i was still around 2000 posts. before ep3 came out, pretty much. so like 2003, 2004 that was before seans time too i beleive. i am refering to the times when it was me, bossk, dayv, gundark, luke, rebel, (warbler may have been around) trooper, and so on.

The funny thing about it is that the insults came from Rob and Stinky, our two trolls-in-residence here at OT.com. They are both fond of making fun of comments they disagree with, just shrug it off and move on. It is best to liken them with guard dogs, they bark at strangers, but if you earn their respect they can be fun to have around. Not trying to justify their actions, just saying that most of us have come to expect that from them and have learned to live with it. They are the type that you should just shrug off their comments and continue with life. Theses two flame you and you act like the whole community has pissed on your grandmother grave.

Also it is a bit childish to say that you are not name calling via the arguement "I did not call you retarded, I said you are acting like a retarded person." which is what you did with the whole "remember Rob, I never actually called you gay..." thing.

As for WESHALLPRESERVE, he is awfully fond of bringing up the fact that he is 14, so for the sake of argument lets just a assume he is fourteen. You claim to be forty, in that case who should be the bigger man? Expect fourteen year olds to act immaturely. If you don't, you're going to be disappointed.

I must say this for the FE.com guys, at least they (for the most part) left their farewell thread the hell alone after posting it.

It's a very uncharacteristic move for me, which is why this is my first (and hopefully only) YAGE. But I don't feel like I'm throwing away several months of community. It is, in fact, that I can't participate in this forum as a community that I am withdrawing.

Once I get comfortable at a message board, I feel like participating more in the general community - and not simply in the main topic (in this case, Star Wars). I like there to be a sense of actual community and comraderie. I don't like hostility. And while I don't expect individual members to rise to my maidenhood defense when I am unjustly attacked, I expect moderators to be around once in a while to see to that task. Because if a message board community is unmoderated, it WILL attract trolls and creeps.

So ... to me, an unmoderated message board community is no community at all. It's not that Rob or stinky dinkens are dickheads; it's that they are allowed to be so continuously. (And I did give 14-year-old WeShallPreserve a pass - - - note that I quoted nothing of him in my initial YAGE post, and my advice directed to him in this thread has been civil and respectful).

I'm sorry to be leaving ... but I can't continue here just posting about Star Wars alone. It gets old. With no more Star Wars on the horizon, it gets old fast. And, as I've posted before, I figured Star Wars talk to die completely once the upcoming 40th anniversary is over.

And so, I really had a desire to branch out into the larger community of general discussion. As a staunch liberal progressive, I am perfectly willing to exchange viewpoints and ideas with the majority conservative members. And perhaps if Rob and Stinky were trolls who did not post every two minutes to viciously and personally attack me after every single post I make, this would not have been that big a deal to me. I had fun dissing them back for 24 hours, but that's it. I don't want to be part of a community where I must deal with such immature hostility on a constant basis, if I want to discuss anything besides Star Wars.

And while I did have qualms about quid-pro-quo-ing by claiming Rob was gay, I personally am not responsible for him considering that an insult. I don't think there's anything wrong with being gay, and I did not call him a fag or a queer or anything of the sort. But, in my experience, anyone that homophobic is classically closet gay. I used a descriptive term and not an insult. The fact that Rob might take it as an insult is merely a part of his neurosis. But his personal problems do not make "gay" an insult. It's simply not.

Obi,
I was not insulted by the fact that you called me gay, I'm as queer as a three dollar bill. By the way you are not a staunch liberal exchanging viewpoints with conservatives. You are a crazy retard exchanging viewpoints with sane people who exhibit common sense reasoning and logic. Your atom bomb stuff is not only foolish, it's outright illogical. If your going to be such an over the top hippy jack ass, you must expect sane people (liberal or conservative) to call you a retard.

I just want to say, Obi, that while I understand your sentiments, I prefer boards that aren't moderated heavily. Insults are things that I believe people should be able to ignore and not respond to. If people can't do that, then so be it, but that's how I see things.

Hehehe, the only place I'm at is in my own YAGE thread. No one forces you to click on it. However, I understand the impetus behind 'leave already' and 'drama queen,' etc. That's the entire POINT of a YAGE thread, and why they are so disfavored.

I don't like nazi-moderated forums either. Like most things in life, something of a balance is usually best. Zero moderation is just as unappealing to me as over-moderation. Perhaps because I moderate with a very light touch on other message boards, the complete lack of moderation here is unacceptable to me.

I would have spent a lot of time deciding whether or not Go-Mer is a troll. He would have had quite a few Private Messages from me to get more information, and let him know what line could not be crossed.
Needless to say, Rob and Stinky would have gotten some messages, too. Personal attacks is one of the common taboos on message boards, and it's really not over-moderating to discourage them.

Perhaps it is a silly veil to allow "your crazy views are retarded" but disallow "you are a crazy retard" ... yet it's a distinction I feel very important in order to encourage a community that is not hostile. By now, Rob and Stinky would have received warnings and a short suspension. Stinky's Drama Queen post above would have had me laughing (as it does), with no moderator action taken. And Rob's calling someone a "crazy retard" after warnings and suspensions would have had him permanently banned.

If that's over-moderating, then you are all welcome to the wild-west community you seem to have. It's a testament to - well, something - that it hasn't degenerated to all-out nastiness and feuding around here. But "crazy" as my viewpoints may be (OMG, anti-nuclear weapons!!! What total freakishness!!!), I don't like being personally insulted for every post I make expressing those views.

And since there's no moderation on this board, I'll post in this YAGE thread as long as I please.

Don't worry, though ... just as I got bored sparring with Rob and Stinky, I'll soon get completely bored with YAGEing. Neither trading insults nor YAGEing are my style. I'll tire of the YAGE soon enough.

Okay, seriously, Rob and Stinky just crack jokes at people they either don't like or find stupid, and some people, like you or Shimmy, fall for their bait and take them seriously, which just makes you look like more of a tight-ass. Personally, I think I have yet to read a post by Stinky that didn't make me laugh.

Oh, and by the way, Stinky was coming up with a lot of really good point, and your little holier-than-thou "I'm not going to respond to you unless you play nice" routine just made his argument look better because you weren't able to refute his claims. Basically, it looked like you couldn't come up with a reply, and just gave up, giving a stupid excuse for doing so.

So either quit being such a tight-ass, or just leave already. I never had a problem with you (in fact, I thought you were one of the better posters here), but you started to get somewhat annoying in the Pearl Harbor and just outright annoying in this thread.

Nanner, the entire point of a YAGE thread is to be annoying. It is the nature of the beast. There's nothing I can do about it. Just leaving is just leaving, and YAGEing is YAGEing.

You bring up a good point, though. You feel I look bad for refusing to participate in a discussion where I'm called "fucking moron" and such for whatever my actual views may be ... but I didn't get the impression Stinky was looking bad to anyone for calling me a "fucking moron" and the like. It's that perceived standard here that I find disquieting.

I'll laugh my head off at things like the Drama Queen photo. But being called a Fucking Moron is no less insulting and potentially inciteful of violence on the net than it is in real life. In fact, the safety of no punch in the face potential is what makes internet insults all the more pathetic.

You're missing my point. You're refusing to read Stinky's thread just because he calls you some mean names, and it basically is conceding defeat. He presents a strong argument, but because he tacks on something like "fucking moron" at the end, you immediately refuse to reply and instead resort to "Oh! You called me a mean name! I'm telling the mods on you!" It's just as childish as Stinky's posts, quite frankly, if not more so. The reason Stinky doesn't look as bad is that he presents his case, and then he argues his point (very vehemently, I might add), while you dance around the question and say "I'm not going to answer you until you play nice."

If you're seriously forty, then there is no way that this is the first time you've been called a "fucking moron" in your lifetime. Get over it.

Obi, the more you post, the less sorry I feel that you are leaving. It is funny you wine about the "lack of moderation" when recently it seems everyone complains about the local moderators being too active.

You and your yage are a perfect example of the increasing number of overly sensitive Americans this country seems to be producing. I imagine that you are entirely unaware of the fact that a decent amount of our "community" (appearantly by your definition, we aren't a community at all) are not Americans, but from numerous location around the globe. I guess people of other nationalities are not as sensitive, you seem to take offense at every tiny little thing. Honestly! Grow up! This is why so many Americans are so sue happy. Oh my gosh! I just spilt my McDonald's McCoffee! I better sue the pants of McDonald's! Bloody hell. Grow up!

Also I think it is funny you mentioned that after the 40th (perhaps you meant 30th) anniversary of Star Wars nobody will have any interest in talking about it anymore. I guess you have never met a real live SW nerd before. I think your problem is that you are a 40 year old woman going to a message board full of mostly guy under the age of 30.

I am not appreciating how you keep pissing on our community. If you don't like it get the hell out. We do have commeraderie here, and right now you keep saying how we are not a community at all, and how pathetic we are here. Two trolls insult you and and you respond immaturely with your over sensitive bitching and it is really getting rediculous. It is not fair to crap on our whole community just because you got your fragile little feeling hurt. I loved your whole lecture on how a board is to be moderated. I hope Jay reads it, I am sure he hasn't a clue of all the things he has been doing so wrong all these years.

man i just dont know how this happened, the site went trolless for 2 years, what did jay do differently in the past year, is beyond me.

Obi the truth is that having lots of moderation and tons of rules in place, will not make a very good online community. With too many rules and strict enforcing them, people dont feel at home. they feel like they are always being watched. with this site, it takes ALOT to get banned, or at least it did. i beleive jimbo was the first person to be banned and he reached like 3000 posts, and was around for about 6 months of complaining before he was booted. so i donno how you can say OT isnt a community, its more of a community then probably 90% of other forums out there.

p.s. i dont take nanner seriously, if i did then i would be sending pm's to the mods, but to date i havent.

What's not to take seriously? I presented my case clearly without any name-calling. I'm not sure how I could make myself any clearer on this.

But at the same time, what's to contact the mods about? I'm glad that, even though you say this is such a great community, I've been here nearly two years and yet you still consider me a simple troll.
