First, the book is really nothing like the movie. The book follows the same basic plot structure of Star Wars, which is to say, the story reaches a few key points, kind of like connect the dots. The author hits the dots, but everything on the way to the dots is his own, and its original and fun. Plus, lots and lots of stories have followed the same structure of Star Wars, long before Star Wars. Star Wars was great, but it wasn't exactly "new" in its plot structure.

Don't judge a book by its movie. The movie resembles Star Wars even closer. Although it hits the same dots, it leaves out all the great original and compelling stuff that made the book. I really wish people would stop flaming the book because the movie sucked. (You can read my review of the film in the off topic forum Eragon Thread.)
