Adywan, did you apply any overall brightness increase? I ask because I'm toying with the idea for my edit, but I don't want to ramp up the noisy dark areas and create posterisation.

i have increased the brightness & gamma but not an overall setting. I had to do it shot for shot with the colour correction because when i tried applying an overall correction some scenes showed too many artifacts. The brightness/contrast/gamma is all over the place with the DVDs. For instance, if you look at the scene where R2 is sucked into the sandcrawler, the levels in the dark areas change and using the same brightness settings throughout only enhances this problem, so i had to actually drop the black levels for a few of the shots to bring them in line with the rest. You could apply a global setting but you would have to check through it and fix the problem shots after, and believe me there are quite a few.lol

Would you consider re-editing the Death Star chasm scene so that it appears Luke throws the grappling hook twice, missing the first time?

this was something that i was thinking of adding into the movie when everything was just in the initial planning stages but was scrapped before i started any work on it. So this won't be appearing in the final edit.

Adywan,

Thanks for admitting that. It makes me feel slightly less like a complete ass.

(Man, you guys came down hard on me for that one.)

I am so excited about this edit! You've done some amazing work here, Adywan -- and you deserve some tremedous congratulations.

One thing, though, that hasn't really been mentioned about the preview clip you put up: lightsabers. Overall, they're all right, but there's something about them -- particularly the clip of Obi-Wan in the Cantina -- that is bothering me. Now, it may be the compression -- you've mentioned that that has distorted some other things, as well, and that once we see them at full DVD resolution, we'll be satisfied. However, I was noticing that the glows seemed a little grainy/painted on, as opposed to really glow-y. I ended up taking a frame that I thought showed what I meant (here) and brought it into Photoshop to see what I could do. Turns out that it's a little harder than I thought to get this frame to look right (I ended up not doing as good a job as I would have liked, especially since I'm a little out of practice, it turns out. You can see what I tried here though -- yours is left untouched in the middle, and the ones on the right and left are mine, each attempting a different look with color, glow size, etc.) -- and I'm thinking that a big part of it had to do with the compression. Once I was examining the frame up-close, the minute problems I had seen appeared to be pixelizations and other artifacts that I'm guessing came from the compression.

Anyhoo, the main reason that I'm bringing this up is because I just want to ensure that the things I'm seeing are indeed from the compression, and not because of the way you are re-doing the lightsaber glows. Would it be possible to post some full-resolution frames (I'm guessing that others might want some of those, from some of the other sections of the film that have been already discussed) to check, or at least an assurance from you? The thing is, if it is your rotoscoping method, then it's something that can be tweaked before the release (either by you, or by someone else doing it -- I might be able to give it a shot, for example, if you wanted me to). But if it's just the compression, then there's nothing to worry about.

As I said, I've loved the things you've been doing with this film. And as lightsabers are something from the films that are close to my heart, I want to make sure they're as perfect as possible (unlike the 2004 DVDs, unfortunately -- some frames were beautiful, and the rest . . . well, you guys know all about that already, I'm sure).

What do you all think?

Take care,
Sojourn

P.S. For example, that shot (of Obi-Wan in the cantina) in the 2004 DVDs was all right, lightsaber-wise. They went for a more Episode III-ish glow, but it wasn't washed out like some of the others in the 2004 set. But do you see how -- in the frame of Luke practicing with the remote, from your first post in this thread -- the blue doesn't look as much like a glow as it looks like it was painted on?
P.P.S. Again, just some thoughts. Please don't take this as an attack in any way, Adywan -- as I said, I'm absolutely loving what you're doing here. Your work is really to be commended. All the best!

I don't remember seeing this mentioned and I thot I'd ask, are you removing the incestual bits of the movie?

i don't understand why people are so freaked by the "incestual" parts of the ot. it's not like they knew they were bro and sis. i mean come on, she's hot and why would he even begin to think that maybe she was his sister. i think it's a funny part of the ot.

Just grabbed the xvid preview off of the SW newsgroup. Must say ADYWAN that your work is just.... I really don't know what to say besides this has potential to be the greatest single fanedit EVER. My jaw dropped so many times during the preview.

I saw mentions of donations and what not.... can I still donate money or anything towards this project?

Looking forward to seeing whatelse is planned on this. Great stuff ADYWAN.

What is there in SW that is incestuous? Leia giving Luck a quick peck "for luck"? No. Big. Deal. Now, maybe one could take issue with the kiss in TESB. But this never bothered me, perhaps because I know the actors aren't related so it isn't truly "gross". I dunno.

To adywan: I checked over a few of your lists of changes and didn't anything about this: When Obi-Wan raises his saber to concede to Vader, the long shot lacks his face peaking out from his hood, which it what it was doing in the close-up. Will this be fixed? I must say my greatest disappointment upon first seeing the SE was that this shot still looked bad to me.

Pardon the double post but something else came to mind....

Adywan, in the disco-themed preview clip you omitted the shot of Ponda Baba's severed arm. I believe this was done intentially to avoid showing the bloody arm which contradicts the cauterization that is typical of a lightsaber wound throughout the saga. Would it be possible to simply show the arm without panning over to see the bloody end of it? That way Luke's visual reaction (his look downward) has a tangible object.

Ya I thot you were fixing the arm, is it not done yet?

And after seeing the other movies, I look back and twinge at every googley-eyed look he gives her, the kiss for luck, and when he gets pissed at Han for liking her, but it was just a question about his edit, it's not gonna kill anybody either way.

The shots in my first post were just prototype examples and were not what the finished shots will look like.

I left out that shot on purpose because this shot isn't finished yet. I'm building a new hand to add into the shot and i have removed the blood and cauterized the wound. I'm going to finish this shot afte Christmas when i have a bit more space and time to build the hand.

This has never bothered me in ANH because it can be seen as though he is just being a protective brother. And don't forget that there have been many cases in real life that a brother and sister feel attracted to each other when they first meet without realising that they are related, so i think George pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one. I may be toning down the kiss in ESB a bit though.

Yes i am still taking donations so i can get the second hard drive needed.

Ok, a quick update on how things are going. Colour correction is now fully completed & I have just over an hour of finished footage, with all the new effects, completed. I've toned down the cantina aliens in a few shots, theres a new docking bay 94 that now looks less like the half built Falcon is against a wall, all effect shots of the escape from Tatooine have been redone including giving the falcon cockpit the missing middle strut.

i'm having a few days break from effects shots and have been playing about with the sound, mainly Vaders. i've been tweaking it to try and get it to sound closer to the rest of the trilogy than it does now. Heres a quick clip:

edit: REMOVED LINK BECAUSE I POSTED THE WRONG CLIP.

The first section is how is sounds on the 2004 DVDs and the second is the new voice. This is only a rough version without all the ambient effects and i still have more filtering and levels to sort out yet (Vaders a little too quiet), but it should give you some idea of how Vader will sound in my version.

Well thats about it from me for now, i would just like to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas and hope you all have a great New Year.

Thanks so much for posting those, Adywan -- the glows look great at full resolution. Wonderful job!

. . . one thing, though -- the glow on Luke's, in the top one, looks just the teensiest bit off, as though it had been tilted slightly to the right. It's a bit difficult to see, but it looks like it might be better placed if it was rotated slightly to the left. Either way, though, it still looks great -- I just figured that if you were going for an "every frame must be perfect" mentality, you might want to change that direction slightly.

Again, I hope you know I'm only doing this because I love what you're doing so much! I'm really really excited for this edit -- this is very likely going to become my definitive version of ANH!

Take care,

About Vader's voice, I was very pleased when they enhanced it in the DVDs to finally match the other films. Honestly I think the '04 version is great. and much better sounding than yours. I just don't see the need to change it from the '04 version. This is pretty much the only decision in the entire project I disagree with you on, though.

I have to agree with CC. Vader's voice sounds good on the '04 DVD.

Yeh i have fixed this one by replacing obi-wan so it doesn't look like a dummy anymore.

oh, and please ignore the vader voice clip. i've posted the wrong clip. . i added the partially renderd backing track for vader instead of the full version and uploaded that version instead. trust me, Vader will sound nothing like that when completed. the reason i'm tweaking it is because i feel that it lacks the depth that his voice has in the rest of the trilogy. it still just doesn't sound right in ANH to me.

Is that the new "final" Vader voice that you used in your "ANH Test" clip posted back in the beginnig of November? (That was the one with the awesome Death Star intro and the Imperial Conference.) If so, I really liked Vader's voice in that! It was nice and bassy.

Hi Adywan, I hadn't really been keeping up with your progress, but I downloaded your sample file and I was amazed by the cantina sequence, why couldn't the guys at Lucasfilm do that rather than the pointless CG additions? you really made those aliens come alive, I will definitely be getting a copy of your final release.

I had a read through the entire thread and the only other comment I had is:

Originally posted by: adywan

Could this possibly be changed to "There'll be no escape for the Captain this time", this is how the line appearded in earlier scripts and the novelization (and maybe the radio play), obviously this refers to Captain Antillies the droids master, it just makes much more sense and will probably be less jarring to hear than your abreviated version (not that I've heard it).

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more progress.

Ok, i know i said i wouldn't be posting anymore clips but, because its Christmas, i though "what the hell". Here is the escape from Tatooine sequence. 2 shots won't be in the finished release, the falcon maneuvers and the unfixed shot of the figure behind Han, but the rest is how it will be in the final one. As usual the audio track is just a temp one.

enjoy and MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
