I'm curious, Ric, how far are you sitting/standing from the console when you're playing? I've read at IGN that the sensor bar only has a range of roughly nine-feet, so you might want to start using candles or something instead. If you're losing sync with the console entirely... I'm not sure what to tell you.

Luke: only played Zelda and WiiSports so far, so Zelda is it. Gonna pick WarioWare Smooth Moves as soon as it's released here (January).

Chaltab: I've set my Wii at my living room, with the sensor bar right below the TV screen. The TV is set at almost my own height. The console is on the floor to the left (no chance of it falling down).

JediSage: Gah! Someone was quicker then... Well think about it this way: what if the website didn't check for the stock before concluding the order, and they contacted you AFTER you paid to tell you there were no products in stock? Also, is the Wii absolutely sold out in the US?

Yes, I thought about it along this line as well. Buy it then "We will ship it to you when we get more". Not good either way.

No word on a total U.S. sell out. I've talked face-to-face with many local retailers and they all feel they'll get more prior to the Christmas holiday but they don't know when. Very frustrating.

There was a sign at our local Wal-Mart that claimed they 'thought' they would get a few in before the 20th, but they don't know how many or when. Kind of funny in a way, I thought.

I think Nintendo is going to take back a huge piece of market share this time around. Seems like all the buzz is about Wii now. I have a friend who's an avid pc-gamer, hasn't owned a console since the NES who's actually trying to get one. If it can bring back people like that then they are in good shape.

I've been thinking it over these past couple of days and decided to trade in my PS2 in hopes to get Wii in the new year. I've got an old 32" 4:3 and the PS2's graphics cut off significantly at the sides giving it a pincushion look that drive me absolutely nuts. I tried a Gamecube on the same TV with not such effect. Plus, there's no point getting a PS3 or 360 as they're best for HDTV's and I don't see myself getting one within the next couple of years. I think Nintendo's approach this generation's of consoles is experimentation in the way the game is played. I think they'll be the first to come out with the next console after this current generation because they probably designed and priced the system with that in mind that most households aren't going HD in the foreseeable future. Sorry, I'm going all over the place with my opinion here. I'm just hoping I'm choosing a console that'll give me an enjoyable gaming experience.

I find it interesting that Wii Sports is ahead of Twilight Princess, especially when they didn't even choose to package it with the Japanese version of the console.

Also reminding that the Wii numbers are only accounting for 2 days of the whole week.

And here's a curious picture from the XBOX360 release in Japan... Sure reminds me of the Wii release...

This week there was the release in Japan of Blue Dragon, a highly antecipated RPG made by the major people responsible for the Final Fantasy series who recently left Square, and it is being released bundled with the console. It got some good sales numbers, and quite some people on the line to get one...

That's right. I forgot that Sakaguchi deserted Square-Enix and started his own company. That's why I'd been wary about getting FFXII because it just didn't seem like a Final Fantasy without Sakaguchi in charge.

Don't trade in your PS2, you'll never get back out what you put into it, and the trade in amount will probably barely make a dent in the price of the wii. I have done this a couple of times, and always felt sorry for it later. I did this with my Gamegear, I traded it in for a Gameboy. Gamegears suck, but later when I though about how much I had spent on my Gamegear and all my games, and then thought of how little the Gameboy had actually cost and that I now only had two games for it and that the GG trade in price didn't even cover it all it. It would have been worth it just to keep my Gamegear and spent a bit extra on the Gameboy. I also lost my SNES in this way in order to help pay for my N64. That is the one I really regret. Especially with how much SNES and games sell for now.

And...

I finally got to play a Wii tonight!

It was fun. All I got to play was Excite Truck, though... and only single player. It was okay... I really don't like racing games all that much, and the control is a bit too loose for my tastes. Still, from what I've played I'd give the game a solid 7/10. Might go up if I got a chance to try multiplayer.

You've got to try some WiiSports before really judging the controller... As for graphics, all the games from this inital line up were either last-generation ports or rushed into production. Starting from Mario Galaxy we'll start seeing what the Wii really can do...

This usually happens with new systems, the first few games are mostly quickly done ports to get something out to sell by release date. That, and with new systems, the programmers don't quite know how what the system can do and how to make it do things, so the games aren't all they could of been. Its the games that come out after initial release that start to really show off the system.

Oh, I'm not concerned about the graphics the Wii will put out in the long run--Metroid Prime 3 looks amazing in motion, and I'm obviously not playing for graphics if I'm getting the Wii.

I think I heard a Sony fanboy cry somewhere in the distance...

I think Sony is in trouble this time...until they can get a good knock-off of the Wii controller. Then I'm sure they'll work on a library of all their games, downloadable to the console. They're not copying Nintendo, though.

Was watching X-Play last week, and they were covering the PS3 launch, and I think it was Grand Tourismo PS3 Morgan Webb was saying that to unlock everything that's "unlockable" in it that it would take like another $400. Unbelievable.

Sony is the #1 technological disapointement of 2006:

#1 Sony

Sony had a real bad year, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the company appears in this ranking in one way or another. In fact, there was so much wrong with Sony products this year that we chose to list the company instead of a single product.

Starting with the rootkit disaster that spilled over from 2005 into 2006, Sony had an unusually consistent run of bad luck in the past twelve months:

- First (Sony) Blu-ray player arrives with a six-month delay

- Nintendo DS outsells Playstation Portable by about 30%

- Roadmap for professional Blu-ray format PDD canceled

- Mylo handheld communicator launched with flaws

- U.S. Movie studios eliminate UMD offerings

- 9.6 million notebook batteries recalled

- Playstation 3 launch allocation reduced by 75%

The Playstation 3 and Blu-ray were the most visible developments and roll-outs for Sony in 2006. And both somewhat stumbled into the market, while competing technologies conquered new grounds. In terms of Blu-ray, the format was announced on June 25 and introduced with just one player, the Samsung BD-P1000. The device was the only available Blu-ray player for several months, was twice as expensive as the HD DVD competition, but had the unique feature of supporting 1080p high-def video. Sony delayed its own Blu-ray player multiple times and started selling the device not until early December.

While its is still to early to make the call which of the two high-definition formats will win, HD DVD has won the first round and, at least at this time, is the more attractive high-definition format of the two.

It is ironic that Sony wanted to use the Playstation 3 game console as the product that drives Blu-ray quickly into the consumer market. However, production problems with blue-laser diodes forced Sony to reduce the launch volume of the delayed PS3 from 2 million to an estimated 300,000 units. And even the reduced volume was apparently enough to dry up the supply of blue laser diodes, which apparently made it impossible for Sony to launch its own family room Blu-ray player.

The launch of the PS3 was a huge disappointment in itself. The fact that we now know that some older Playstation games are not supported by the PS3, the fact that the console needs a firmware update right out of the box are just two indications that the device was rushed out. From the consumer's view, that is simply unacceptable.

The same goes for the launch allocation cut. Sony spent quite some time to hype the console and create a huge demand, only to tell its customers that only one fourth of the originally planned launch volume would be made available at launch (actually it was much less than that on launch day.) While the U.S. received an estimated 200,000 consoles, Taiwan, for example got a total of 500.

You can't tell me that Sony wasn't aware of the dramatic discrepancy between supply and demand. Whatever reason may have convinced the company to launch an unfinished product that was not available in sufficient numbers, the customer's needs were irrelevant. But then, Sony has a history of forgetting, or, at least, not understanding the costumer: At the 2006 CES, chief executive officer Sir Howard Stringer compared the relationship between Sony and its customers with a marriage: "Sometimes we misunderstand each other, but that's a concept of marriage."

Stringer promised that Sony is "learning" and 2006 showed that the company has still a lot of work to do.

No, no, they'll say I'll 'change my mind' when the Wii falls into third place or whatever they think will happen.

I understand full well the Wii is nowhere near as powerful as the PS3, and I don't care. I played a PS3 at Wal-Mart and well, it was a PS2 game with better graphics. (Some NBA or NCAA Basketball game)

Graphics aren't what made me want a GC--Super Smash Bros Melee was. And online Smash Bros Brawl is ultimately what sold me on the Wii. (It's my email address for crying out loud.)

DS? Mario Kart and Castlevania. GBA? Super Mario World. X-Box? Knights of the Old Republic. PS2? Devil May Cry. 360? Gears of War and Dead Rising. Nothing made me want the PSP--I just recieved one for Christmas last year. The only game I even plan to buy for it in the forseable future is Rachet and Clank: Size Matters, because Rachet and Clank own my soul.

I plan to get a PS3 eventually, mostly for the Rachet and Clank game announced for it.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not done with this generation yet. I still have three Collosi to kill in Shadow fo the Collossus and haven't even got around to Killer 7, Paper Mario 2, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, God of War, Guitar Hero I or II, Bully, or Final Fantasy XII.

Does anyone know the name of the song that's being used in the Gears of War commercial? It's very nice, and I think it's called Endless Sorrow or No Tomorrow.

I'm not sure what I want from my gaming these days. I'm definitely much more of a pc gamer vs console, and have been for years. I play Halo on pc whenever I can, and I'm also playing Guild Wars and GTA: Vice City (old, but I'm enjoying playing it again). The problem is that the pc as a gaming platform is dying. There are many games only available in console that I can't get on pc, like God of War and Bully, and it irks me. However, I'd rather spend the $$ on the Wii than on one of the other consoles, so I'm stuck with the same problem.

That's part of the problem with an open hard-ware system. Nothing stops the developers from constantly jacking up the requirements to play their games. People can always toss in more RAM or a new video card. Whereas with the consoles they have a fixed limit on what they can do.
