Do you have a gun?

Author
Time
I'm from Holland and it's pretty difficult to (legally) own a gun here, it's all very restricted. But I just love guns Not to shoot animals (or any other breathing organism) but just targets.
When you saw the name of the thread and the name of the creator you probably thought I was going to criticize the US. Not gonna happen.

So if you have a gun (or guns), I'm interested in the technical details (and a picture would be nice).

Dudes! He's a cop! Don't tell him anything!

Just kidding.

Yes, I have a number of guns. I am not a hunter and have no real interest in hunting, but like you, I really enjoy shooting. I think it is important to know how to properly handle and use guns. I think there would be a lot less gun casualties if people were not so gun-phobic. And it is stupid to say that guns are a big contributer to violence, if people want to harm people there are plenty of ways to do it. If we get guns banned world wide, what do we do next, ban kitchen knifes? I do not think guns should be unbelievable difficult to get, but I definately don't think they should be super easy to get either. No matter what laws they make, people are still going to be able to get fire arms on the black market with relative ease.

I own a couple. I've hunted in the past but also a lot of target shooting. Miss those days...

I've gone target shooting before, and I've been told I'm a natural gunfighter from everyone who has seen me shoot.

At least there is ONE thing I'm good at.

My dad's got three guns: a shotgun, a .22 rifle, and a model of Colt .45 that was discontinued in 1982.

One of the very few pictures of me shooting. This was during a holiday in Norway in 2002. The gun is a Beretta (but I have no idea what type). I was shooting at clay discs.

Lost my taste for it, I guess. I'm not against hunting as long as the animals are killed humanely, but it's just not for me any more.

I am going to assume that is a shot-gun since you were shooting at clay discs, looks like it might be something around a 16 - 20 gage. Am I wrong?

Being a WWII reenactor, I currently own an M1 Garand, which IMO is one of the best rifles on the market as far as durability, shooting power, etc go. Very good one rifle all around. Here's a picture of it (and me as well):

I've heard that about the Gerand.

I do not own a gun, however since Ohio passed a law allowing conceal/carry, I have thought about taking the classes and taking the tests necessary in getting a permit to participate. If I bought one, I think I'd go with a Glock 17 or the Walther PPK (I believe its still in production).

The only "real" weapons I have are from a recent halloween costume I put together. 1. A wooden bokken roughly 3-4 feet long and 2. 3 steel bo-shuriken. The shuriken could imflict some major damage to a person thrown properly, but the bokken would just hurt to get hit with.

It's a shotgun but I don't know what gage (it's not my gun, I don't own any).

Bad_karma, the M1 Garand, is that the rifle that throws out the clip when the last round is fired?

No, and, if I owned a gun I would most probably shoot myself than anyone else...

See, that is exactly why we should teach people how to use guns rather than just wishing they would blink out of existence. Plenty of people accidentally injure themselves or others because of their ignorance about guns and how to operate them. Although I am not so sure that is what you are talking about.

Nope. The only person I would shoot at would be me. Holding the gun on my mouth and pulling the trigger. That's what I meant.

My father served in Korea after most of the fighting was over, but he still carried an M-1. He is of the opinion it's the greatest weapon ever made for individual soldiers, and scorns the M-16 as a plastic toy. Myself, I'd like to get a Mauser.

You wouldnt happen to know of any place to get them do you?

The gauge is the diameter of a shotgun barrel. Oddly enough, the calibar increases inversely to the gauge (i.e., a 12-gauge is higher calibar than a 20-gauge).

Yes, the M1 carries an 8-round clip that shoots itself off with a distinctive "ping" when the last round is fired. Probably the only disadvantage of the rifle...

I haven't seen very many gun stores that carry them. Are you in the states? If you are, you could try www.auctionarms.com, which is basically like eBay for guns, or you could get one through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (www.odcmp.com). They can get pricey though. I bought mine for $500, as did a friend of mine, but nowadays they're about $1000 or so...

On this topic, I do not own any firearms (age 14...Yes..) but I have shot 40.Cal, 9mm, and .22 cal on various occasions. I look foward to getting a 9mm, (Preferable a SigSaur, if anyone is thinking about getting a pistol, they are suprior weapons, made in Europe and many police agencys are phasing out the old 9mm Beretta (plauged with jams, problems, etc.) with the models P226, and P229 which are also avaliable in Civilian models).

I'm gonna make a copy of the HTML for this thread. Call this cultural shock or whatever, but the mere fact that people here are discussing weapons as they were videogames is so absolutely bizarre and extremely shocking I've GOT to show at my friends and colleagues at work.

Well, Ric, it probably is cultural.
The US's relative freedom regarding private ownership of weapons means its just another part of some people's lives, where as in other, more restrictive countries, its not. It could also be media-related. I have more knowledge of weapons because of shows on the History Channel...and I took a military history class in high school.

May not be the best example, but imagine going to Africa and trying to talk to a tribesman about the Internet. They'd have no more clue about it than if they tried to tell you about bringing down a Wildebeest with a spear or bow-and-arrow.

Why is it so bizarre? It has nothing to do with agression or violence. I hate all the war and violence that's going on in the world but I love weapons. But just for recreational (is that a correct word?) use.
