Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released) — Page 58

I think TM has things on the right track. Right now he wants to make it as perfect as possible to start with. Fair enough. Nobody other than Lucasfilm wants to release rushed unfinished products. Hold your horses, it will be coming soon enough. After the initial release TM will heed whatever feedback he gets and fix any technical errors before the DL release. Right now I am sure he just wants to be done with it more than any of us want to see it.

The problem with releasing an unfinished product is people ( not refering to the members of this site) will hear about the edit and download the rough cut and not like the flaws. So in turn they will not download the updated version, thinking it not worth the time, and then they will post bad reviews about it on websites like TF.N. I say take your time and do it right TM.

Thank you to all who commented on the voice- I'm trying out some new techniques/filters, so what you heard is definitely not final yet. Bespinsec, who's an actual audio engineer, very kindly PMd me with advice on this. We want to bring that warm, "analogue" quality to these modern digital recordings, and still keep the low end of Anakin's voice (so it isn't shrill or tinny). Otherwise it's not going to work too well.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. After all this time and work, I really don't want people criticizing something that isn't even finished- it would really make me sad. Especially when the end is just a couple months away. The new voices and the believability of the new ADR will make or break this film, and I've GOT to get it right before people see it. Every person that saw an unfinished cut of this would not get the effect of seeing this film the way I want them to see it for the first time- their initial impression would be incorrect.

Bingo I'll take my break in between single-layer and dual-layer releases. Not that I didn't really enjoy editing this movie and brainstorming ideas, but right now, I just want to finish it and pick up life where I left off...

Computer's been down, so I haven't been able to comment.

I agree with the others: take as much time as you need to. I still prefer the argument over the garage scene, although, I think part of it is the mouth thing. It's looking great!

I have an idea:

I know how disappointed all you guys are that this will be done next year in a couple months. instead of this year like I had promised. To make up and to prepare you for what is to come, I think this month of December I'm going to show you an exciting sequence from the movie in its complete form, so that you can see all the changes in context. If you want to be surprised, of course... don't watch It seems to me that this would be even better than a trailer, because you'll really get a feel for what this movie's about. To make up for not releasing the movie this year, you get to watch a scene in its entirety.

Here's a list of choices (there are certain scenes I don't want to give you, like the arena or the clone war. I also don't really want to give you a scene heavy on the Anakin voice because the sound of that is still being worked on. I'm trying to get a plugin that gives the digital recordings that warm, "analogue" sound that retains the low register of my recordings, which is probably the whole key to this puzzle).

-The Nightclub (new colors, new background music by Mancini, and Blade Runner footage! I heartily recommend this one for getting the overall style of the thing. This does NOT feel like a recent movie in any way).
-Lama-Su's Brave New World (hear a complete scene with Lama-Su performed by Tim. Hear the Kotor march when the clones are revealed, and hear the new backstory about the clones and the Fett family)
-Asteroid Field (very prominent new music, some different sound effects)
-Jango vs. Obi-Wan (new sound mix, impact flashes, and very familiar music!)
-The Droid Factory (no C3PO antics, R2 saves the day without flying, different music, dark, mood setting colors, and an very good Jason Windgreen impression by Weezer)

You must choose one. But choose wisely. For as the truly outstanding clip will bring you great entertainment, the false one will...

I'll stop now

Night clube scene, or perhaps the Lama Su scene. Also don't sweat it TM, I don't think any of us are too sorry to wait another couple of months. We are all very appreciative about all the hard work and countless hours you have poured into this thing.

I'm a'pickin' the night club scene. Gimme gimme!

So TM, does it come across too obvious that Lama Su's voice was done by a 17 year old?

I say either the Outlander's Club or the droid factory scene.

Post what you want, I'n not going to watch it anyway!!@!

Actually, I'm still following the threads, I just want to be surprised when the real thing rolls around. No more spoilers for me!!

Sadly, this also goes for DE's and Adywan's projects as well.

I'm very interested in seeing how you managed to salvage the horrible droid factory scene.

But I suspect the nightclub scene will give a better idea of the flavor of this project. So I'll vote for that.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I think it's safe to say that pretty much everyone wants the Nightclub scene. Let's see it, TM!

Yay!!

Just start the clip right before the Fox logo comes up and let it run a little extra so we can see that cool Ratings Card in context at the end of the clip-- you know, to privide context for the diner scene. Right?

Seriously, Thanks in advance for the sneak peek!

108 minutes

I just did all of the math today and discovered the running time as of this time. 108. Wow! I could’ve sworn that it was longer than that- that’s over half an hour shorter than the original cut and 16 minutes shorter than the original Star Wars. Raiders of the Lost Ark is 7 minutes longer. And I salvaged so many bad scenes and turned them into good ones. But then I took inventory and realized just how much I really did throw out (not including reworkings and medium to small cuts- these are the huge ones):

AXED:

Part of opening scene (after explosion)
*Elevator scene
Both Jango/Zam scenes
Part of Obi-Wan/Anakin fight
*Part of Coruscant chase
Part of Jedi Council meeting
*Long scene in Padme’s bedroom (Anakin whines and establishes himself as stalker)
*Mace/Obi-Wan/Yoda scene (irretrievable)
Part of Coruscant departure scene (all the m’lady stuff)
*Dex’s Diner scene
Much of the Yoda/Younglings scene
Some of the en route scene
*Queen Jamilla scene
Much of the balcony scene
*Aggressive negotiations scene
Much of the fireplace rejection scene
A lot of the droid factory
Most of the Yoda/Dooku fight

So taking this into consideration and thinking about all the other cuts that were made on top of this, I guess I can see how I lost half an hour of footage, even with the 3 or 4 new scenes I’ve included.

------------------
Anyway, things are really coming along now. The video should be locked, encoded, and burned onto a hard copy by the end of the year, hopefully giving me all of the remaining time to focus on audio.

As a side-note, I’m looking at the very end of the movie now, and I’m really appalled- I think this wins 1st place for the most stupid looking kiss scene ever put to film (or pixels, actually). Absolutely pathetic, lifeless, and laughable.

Any suggestions? This is the last thing the audience sees, and I really wish I could do something about it…

-TM

I've repositioned the Naboo kissing scene from earlier in the film to the end of the film in my edit. Ie, a kissing scene replaces the wedding scene (I too disliked the ending and am taking steps to hopefully improve it).

Depending if you've kept the first kissing scene (after they get off that little gondola and Padme tells her lame, "lying on the sand, guess the name of the f***ing birds" story) you could place it at the end instead. There's enough footage there.

I sort of like this as an alternative ending because it isn't as IN YOUR FACE as the wedding ending. Its much more subtle and effective (I think anyway) to have the audience piece it together, ie they get married offscreen, sometime between AOTC and the Clone Wars/ROTS.

The only emotional difference with doing this however, is you lose the dramatic emphasis of them locking lips as the sun sets. The Naboo kissing scene is during the day.

I guess with alot of re-editing decisions, its a toss up. You may lose the emotional impact along with the cringe factor.
