Eventually. I'm probably going to have to lay out the 2nd gen and re-align the soundtrack to the 1st gen according to that. I'll also have to splice in a few bits from that where there's tape dropouts. I think I can grab a few bits from the Calvert WIP since there's a few war machine shots that look less compressed and blocky than the 1st gen AVI. I'd also like to try to clean it up as much as possible, like removing splices and freezing storyboards.
Although, ocp, did you already do a re-synch of the 1st gen for DVD-R?

i am not going to take my collection to china, but will leave it in perth, if anyone is there, they can copy it and send it to you, but i dont want to loose anything from it. and i will only go to my dads house one time during my stay there, i am only there one week. from dec1-9th. i can leave it with my friend who lives there if u can organise someone to copy it. keep me updated. i have animation from babbit and ken harris, as well as dicks old stuff on paper, a lot of drawings, color models of most characters, model sheets galore, a large scrap book that holds alot of stuff. layouts and some cells. plus other things i forgot already. u can get a copy of it, but i cant do it for u, as i am not there long enough. talk soon.

EDIT: Yes, you did say that, back in March:
He saved a VHS copy of the workprint direct from the U-matic, but he did so three months before the studio closed - which means it's the normal workprint that we all have. I had hoped that he had managed to get the fabled "second and final workprint," which no one seems to have bootlegged.
His copy would presumably be in PAL and high quality, and thus very desirable...

Even though there isn't going to be a Mark III, I think a complete, first-gen PAL copy of the workprint would be a great thing to have. It'd certainly be a big help to Patrick (Og) and *his* projects (Google Video version of the workprint, and his "enhanced" workprint edit)...and I, for one, would love to see a better, non-AVI version of the workprint, period.
And who knows, maybe it's a copy without that nasty long audio dropout in the middle...

First of all, well done to Garret and all those who helped. Brilliant job on the recobbled cut. Sounds amazing. Haven't seen it yet, but am busy downloading (at about 50% already). I came across this thread beginning of the week, and have been glued to it, reading all 81 pages in 4 days. I feel like quite the expert on the subject now. Amazing, the amount of things that has come your way, because of this thread and your excellent work. Anyway, reason I'm chiming in is just to give you a little piece of trivia. I keep reading how Calvert's first cut was named 'The Princess and the Cobbler' and only released in Australia and South Africa. Ok, first of all, I don't recall a theatrical release here in S.A. But, the vhs copy at my video store is definately not called 'The Princess and the Cobbler'. It's called 'The Thief and the Cobbler'. Look, it's definately the 'princess' cut, as far as i can tell from your discriptions of it : witch scene, war machine sequence, silent thief, etc. But the box definately says 'Thief', not 'Princess'. Weird, ha?

Which you know, having read the entire thread! Wow, that's a lot of reading. It's been quite a ride here.
The VHS and DVD copies of the cut known as Arabian Knight, here in the states, have also been retitled The Thief and the Cobbler, so that seems to just be the accepted title now (despite what IMDB thinks!) ...
I'm back here in Los Angeles, living right down the street from where I was living before. Sadly the $1000 or more I spent unsuccessfully trying to move to Connecticut is money I'll never be able to get back.

Phido's original name from Nasruddin, "Brutay", is identical in pronounciation to "Et tu, Brutè?", the last words spoken by Julius Caesar when he saw his long-time friend Brutus in the crowd that was about to kill him. Not only would this name fit Phido's role in the story VERY well (ZigZag even says those very last words at the end), but it now also makes sense why ZigZag keeps saying "eh, Phido?", which is one of the only things he says in the film that doesn't rhyme (frankly, it's quite jarring). Originally, of course, this would've been "eh, Brutay?".
It's brilliant. So brilliant, I really, REALLY wonder why the name wasn't kept.

Because then it would have been obvious that the bird was going to kill ZigZag.

The Mark II is of course available at Demonoid.com. Not sure if it's at mininova.org.
And, of course, for many of the special features, check out Ogg's postings at Google Video for Richard Williams ....
I thought the name "Brutay" was a bit too obvious, but hey, sometimes obvious is good. Worth noting that Iago, the equivalent in Aladdin, is named for another backstabber in a Shakespeare play.

Is anything worked out for the Jerry Verschoor thing? Is one of our Aussie members going to be making the trip to get that stuff?
Don't forget the 1st-gen PAL workprint copy...

And I know, it does sound rather unsettling. Even so, the Weinsteins may only have certain rights to the film. If Disney had relinquished ALL rights to the Weinsteins, Don Hahn would have said so at Comic Con, and would have said that a Disney restoration was thus impossible, rather than saying it was a "someday" project...
It'd be a shame to see an official restoration tied up in legal wranglings, what with Disney holding the film materials and the Weinsteins holding (some kind of) ownership rights.

I take it that you meant an official Disney restoration when you said "Mark III"? I know we shouldn't expect anything better from Miramax!

I meant that OCP wont be around, because...well, you know.

Well, I'm sure others, as well as myself, will keep this thread going. Personally, I feel that a Mark III would be justified only if a fully progressive source can be found for the workprint in high quality, as well as a better print of the released version(s).
Once we're past that stuff, there's only new 35mm transferring, which is something Disney would only be able to afford and accomplish. Even if someone could get to an archive with a print (like the Library of Congress, which holds a reference 35mm print of Arabian Knight), they're not allowed to perform a video transfer without the permission of the copyright holder.

I know that OCP can do restorations without this board (but I don't know why you feel the need to come here and say "hey look OCP won't be here anymore !". It's pretty childish).

As a person who has gotten DVD's from him, I believe that without the support of the community, especially one like this, and the state he's in right now, it might be difficult for him to get the time to pull together another massive project. And don't you ever call me childish. I'm being rational.
