I am very interested in seeing the ESB Super 8mm transfers!

I would be grateful if you could contact me when you have completed the project.

I have just finished watching the ESB Super 8mm reels.

There are lots of differences in the dialogue! There is even an additional line for C-3P0!

Wow... How many reels is it?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Could you list some of the changes?

Is it just different audio takes or actually different audio? How did you see them?

Some of the supposed differences between the 70mm and the 35mm (which is more or less the LaserDisc/VHS release) are listed here.

Does the 8mm resemble either of these versions??

Ok folks, there are two reels of 'Selected Scenes'. Basically its just a condensed version of ESB. I purchased a Super 8mm sound projector to watch them on.

Here are some of the differences, off the top of my head:

- Luke - "I don't pick up any life readings" - Different take
- Han - "I'm going back" - Different take
- More rebel calls of 'retreat' when Walkers attack
- Leia "They're getting closer [star destroyers] - Different take - she stutters it twice
- Cloud Car pilots - Different line - will confirm with actual line asap.
- Leia "I know where Luke is" is replaced by "we must go back" or something similar
- C3P0 - new line just before "I thought that hairy beast would be the end of me" - It's something like "I'm glad we are back together"
- The frigate at the end looks decidedly different - i will have to check this.

So there is certainly another sound mix out there!

I just wish I could get this transferred onto DVD and integrate my findings into my 'Building Empire' project.

I may be able to record the sound actually. I am sure there is a way!

I'm sure you can hijack the sound output somewhere. And if nothing else, for the different footage, point a video camera at it...

Though it would be really nice if we could come up with the $300 to get these telecined.

There doesn't seem to be any different footage as such. And having looked at the frigate scene again it seems that the lights in the frigate model just register more blue (could be the age of the Super 8 film). I will have to take a closer look again.

I am going to try to get the audio from the external jack. But.. the baby is asleep and this projector really makes a racket!

It would be great to get the money together wouldn't it!

Huh. That list was compiled by myself and Neil S. Bulk and was taken word for word from this thread. I wonder how it got to wikipedia.

This is intriguing. I don't think I've ever watched one of those 8mm digest reels. Are you absolutely certain about those differences? Did you actually compare it with a DVD or VHS tape, or are you just going by memory? I would be very interested in an audio capture if you can get one.
Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

I purchased the two reels spliced together on ebay.

The differences are from memory but given that I have watched ESB backwards and forwards many many times whilst doing my project I am 99% sure on all of these changes.

***UPDATE***

Ok I have managed to run a simple line out of the projector and am currently recording the audio. I will post the relevant bits as soon as I can.

- Luke - "I don't pick up any life readings" - Different take
- Han - "I'm going back" - Different take
- More rebels calls of 'retreat' when Walkers attack
- Leia "They're getting closer [star destroyers] - Different take - she stutters it twice
- Cloud Car pilots - Different line - will confirm with actual line asap.
- Leia "I know where Luke is" is replaced by "we must go back" or something similar
- C3P0 - new line just before "I thought that hairy beast would be the end of me" - It's something like "I'm glad we are back together"
- The frigate at the end looks decidedly different - i will have to check this.
Cloud City Security - "Any aggressive move will not be tollerated!"
Cloud Cit Security - "Permission granted to land on platform 3-2-7. Any deviattion will" - Han cuts of comms.
Leia - "Lando, hurry up, we've got company!" (as Lando is rescuing Luke from the weathervane)
C3P0- "Get away from there, you don't know how to fix the hyperdrive!

-------

Now note this portion of the 4th Draft Script which ties in with one of these findings.

348. INT COCKPIT - MILLENNIUM FALCON - CLOUDS - BESPIN

Flak bursts outside the cockpit window and rattles the ship's interior. Leia looks worried.

INTERCOM (O.S. Voice)
Standing by... any aggressive move will bring about your destruction.

THREEPIO
Rather touchy, aren't they.

....

INTERCOM (O.S.)
Permission granted to land on platform 327... any deviation of flight pattern will bring about your...

Han snaps off intercom. He is angry. The giant Wookiee turns to Han and grunts. Han turns to the worried Princess and her droid.

This is INTERESTING stuff!!

The Puggo Project of this is almost done. See the link below. All that's left to do is make the menu. Jambe's description of the audio differences matches the copy I transfered. There's a BIG surprise (at least it was to me) in the Star Wars crawl. Note this is not of the entire movie, just the condensed home versions of SW and ESB. They are still really cool.

Watch the Puggo thread (and the Puggo webpage) over the next couple of days. Although there is still plenty of room for tweaking, I'm pretty proud of how it came out.

Well, it may not be a "surprise" to those of you who've been around longer than me. In the Super-8 home edition filmreels, there is no crawl. Instead, the words in the crawl are narrated as the ships come into view. I don't recognize the voice.

As far as a.b.starwars... I don't know how to do that. I suspect Boba Feta will be making it available. I'll do some limited trading of it after he gets a chance to take a look at it. The whole thing (SW and ESB) fit on one DVD. Last week I finished some cleanup on the video, spruced up the menu a bit, and sent it off to him. I think it's very cool.

I'm glad to see that these are finished. Are they also going to make their way to torrents? I'd love to get a copy of these.

When it's ready to go I'll set up a PiF framework and torrent base.
