You know what really "wow" is? Learn to speak 3 different languages like myself. Oh wait, you don´t have to. You are probably American, and will most probably never set foot on another continent besides your own. And if you do, the first thing you will do is heading to the next McDonald´s, avoiding exposure to too much foreign culture mixing up your precious little brain.

I´m sorry if I offend anyone, but ignorant posts like this drive me nuts.Asshole!
Whoa nelly!

I agree that he probably shouldn't have corrected your spelling, but in turn you decide to insult my country?

I have no problem if someone corrects my spelling, but he didn´t do that. He simply suggested that I am dumb or something because I used the wrong spelling, and yesterday, I was really upset by this, because I was in a very bad mood. I hope at least you notice that I wrote Asshole, not Assholes .

Concerning insulting countries, well, I´m sorry if you felt that I have insulted you as a person. I didn´t. My whole anger was mainly directed towards him, as I already said, I´m sorry if I offend anyone. Nevertheless, there is at least small truth in everything.

Americans tend to be ignorant of the world around them, and I can partly understand that, because it is a very big and wealthy country. You don´t have to understand the rest of the world. You don´t have to acknoledge international laws. You can anonymously torture people, and no oher nation has the guts to stand up against this. You don´t have to acknowledge international agreements to decrease pollution and stop earth warming. You still have the barbaric death penalty. Power corrupts, and leads to decay. And the frustrating thing is, if you go down, you are going to take us all with you.

I know that by saying "you", I mainly refer to your administration. But then again, who voted for them to be elected TWICE?

Germans for instance, tend to be very downbeating and they like to pity themselves although they live in a rich country, too, and since we are Europeans, we share the same kind of arrogance with other european countries. And yes, we have our own black past. A reason more to consider our opinion on certain things...

You can´t deny that there are cultural differences between nations. We should both celebrate what we share AND what makes us different. If you think pointing out cultural differences are insults, well, I only can say: nobody likes when someone holds a mirror in front of you.

I'm an American (I have no idea if canofhumdingers is or not- he may be Canadian, he may be British or Australian....) but I was one of the Americans on this board who came to your defense and still you decide to assume that the one person who offended you is American while none of your defenders are?

Umm, unless I got something serious wrong, Canadians also live on the American continent. Technically, you are a citizen of the USA. Yes, people mainly call you Americans, but technically, I could also call a Canadian an American. As you can call me an European.

....and if you'll notice, even though I'm an ignorant American, I managed to write this post without insulting your homeland.

No, you are not an ignorant American. You are a non-ignorant American. See the difference? I never said that all Americans are ignorant. But many of you guys take a lot of things for granted. You are not used to be critized by others. You can´t handle it, because you don´t have to... ...yet.

Again, I´m sorry if I offend anyone personally. Perhaps I´m kind of ignorant, too now. Maybe, there is perhaps more in common than I thought. At least, I am somewhat able to reflect on this.

Well, telling a fat lady that she is, in fact, fat, is an insult, correct. A honest one, though.

I guess in Vigo's mind, we're all fat, lazy and ignorant.

Statistically, you are in fact the "fattest" nation on the planet. Everything concerning food coming from your culture is "fat fat fat". Does this say that all of you are fat? Did I say that all Americans are ignorant? Now YOU are being ignorant. An ignorant American. See what I mean?

We're sorry for gracing you with our presence, Vigo.

*sigh* Now the drama queens are coming on board, too.

I'm very well aware of what the nazis did Vigo and I don't take the term lightly. I used a common internet term to illustrate a point. I personally can't stand it when someone goes out of their way to correct spelling and grammar when they know what the intent is behind the message. I've seen enough "nazis" in my lifetime on the net to know that those people are very annoying. Most people either let themselves be corrected or they go out of their way to make spelling/grammar mistakes so the other person will just give up.

Anyway, it looks like I touched a nerve and I'm sorry for that. My intent was to point out that you assumed a "lazy american" didn't know anything. Well, this "lazy American" has been beyond his country's borders (Japan and Mexico, I don't usually count Mexico). And no, I didn't look for a McDonald's when I got to Japan. This "lazy American" enjoyed your post, but I didn't enjoy your generalized attack on my nationality.

Now that I've read all the messages, I can see that you're not the only one with an axe to grind. I'll put my comments about Germany's dark past on hold. Maybe you should educate yourself on some of the "international treaties" that we're "violating" and not just watch the nightly news in your country.

This is 4 years old (I'm looking for current statistics right now), but it's still interesting http://www.pbs.org/now/science/fit.html

For the record, the original reply was simply "wow". Obi Jeewhyen is the one that provided a correction along with an explanation of his correction. He also provided a polite request for correction if he was indeed wrong. No attack was necessary on anyones part. Now that this thread has been completely derailed, it should be locked.

Point out where I did you call you a "lazy American". And I am happy that you seem to be someone who knows other places aswell and are not afraid of other cultures.

No, feel free to tell me everything you want. I am not afraid to talk about our dark past. In fact, we Germans know best about our past than most other countries. We extensively learn it in school. Our television is full of in-depth historic reports of all our cruelties we did. Don´t think you can tell US anything which we already do not know.

On the other hand, most Americans will gladly point out that Hitler was the most famous German...

Maybe you should educate yourself on some of the "international treaties" that we're "violating" and not just watch the nightly news in your country.

Whoa, I didn't mean to touch off a firestorm.

Vigo, your command of the English language is so proficient, I assumed you were merely making a spelling error ... and not posting in a second (or in your case, third) language. Furthermore, if it's the proper spelling in Germany, a simple statement to that effect (as I requested) would have been sufficient.

In any case, as a German, you are likely to be upset a bit by common internet terms such as "spelling nazi" and "grammer nazi." I think you will just have to develop a thicker skin about it. The term has been co-opted for any kind of extreme, since it is the epitome of extremism. (Similarly, in the States, every politcal scandal is the something-gate, referring (in perpetuity it seems) to an ultimate example of political scandal). No one meant offense by using the term "spelling nazi" ... and I meant no offense by being one.

Likewise, I took no offense at your comment about my countrymen. Many are fat and lazy and stupid and I guess a majority of them elected George Bush. Nuff said. But I don't fit the description of the ugly American, and so I looked past your generalization. Please do the same about the 'nazi' phrase, and please accept my apologies about your spelling in a non-native tongue.

Perhaps yes. But yesterday, I was in such a bad mood, I reacted very strongly to this. I´m sorry.

You are getting me wrong. If you say Nazi, I don´t identify myself with it. I never harmed a single person in my life, and although I may give a different impression in this thread, I´m neither a rascist, nor do I judge people before I know them. The problem is, I came off totally wrong. I did not say that all Americans are like that. I was merely pointing out that no one is perfect, and that Americans have a tendency to think they are. If you are insulted by that, I´m sorry. Every nation has its typical "bad traits". You think the French people are arrogant. French people think Americans are arrogant. We Germans are the former "evildoers" of the world. Dutch people are smoking pot and watching porn all day...

No, the only thing bothering me, and Nazi is not the only word, is that by using it too much, in every context, the world loses its important meaning. I mean, if you call everyone a Nazi as a generic insult, the crimes of the past also become somewhat "generic".

Likewise, I took no offense at your comment about my countrymen.

I also took no offense. I was just pointing out that we all can easily make ourselves look ignorant.

Many are fat and lazy and stupid and I guess a majority of them elected George Bush. Nuff said. But I don't fit the description of the ugly American, and so I looked past your generalization.

Yes, good reaction. If anyone would write "All Germans are Nazis", my rection to this would be "Why do you think so?" and listen to it.

YOu are right, I came off as generalizing people. I want to apologize for that.

Please do the same about the 'nazi' phrase, and please accept my apologies about your spelling in a non-native tongue..

I took no offense at your remark. I´m sorry. I reacted wrong and I made a mistake, ok?

You generalized about all Americans right here. You even felt it necessary to lump Canada in with it in a later post, simply because it's on the same continent. By that reasoning, anyone in either North or South America is fat, lazy, and stupid.

Now that I've read all the messages, I can see that you're not the only one with an axe to grind. I'll put my comments about Germany's dark past on hold.

That may be so. Albert Einstein was pretty famous too though. Of course, I'd bet most Americans don't know he invented the atom bomb and had to escape Germany as well. But there's really no reason to bring up any of this. I'm sure every country in the world has some sort of dark past. Most countries learn from their mistakes and try to get along with everyone else.

Maybe you should educate yourself on some of the "international treaties" that we're "violating" and not just watch the nightly news in your country.

Ok, perhaps I should be more confident in what political leaders are saying, right? Or listen to what YOUR, of course totally objective, media is reporting, right?

No. Look it up for yourself. A majority of Americans get their news from the evening news. I get mine from the internet, talk radio, and other sources. Just don't take everything you hear or read from the BBC (or wherever you get your news) at face value. No matter how bad the news sometimes looks, there's always either a reason or the story has been twisted beyond belief.

You're probably right that most Americans are fat, lazy, slobs (statistically it's not true though). Generalizing about all of us though is just as bad as using the terms the way we do ("grammar nazi" and all that). All we can do is educate ourselves and the people we come in contact with. As Obi Jeewhyen said, he asked for a correction, not a smackdown. Since we can only control ourselves and not those around us, I suggest that we simply learn from this and try to take things a bit easier next time.

This entire thread blew up because two people didn't know that the word was spelled differently in your country and one person felt the need to point out a different spelling. I even looked it up on Google and dictionary.com to see if there was a different British spelling (didn't know you were German). Having not found it, I simply assumed you meant restoration. Now that all this has come up though, I'm better for it since I know you said what you meant and that it is spelled differently in your country. You seem to be extremely upset about some other things as well, but I don't think we need to get into that here.

If you wish to discuss any of this in private, feel free to PM me or email me at jedimcg at gmail dot com. BTW, this message was hellishly difficult to edit, so I'm sorry if the quoting is a bit off.

Now can we please get back on topic?

Heheh, I think the topic of nationalistic stereotypes and how to combat them is far more interesting.

Forget some countries having a dark past hard to live down, mine (the U.S.) has a dark present we'll be lucky enough to live down in a century!

Maybe we could merge the topics by discussing whether the rapid expansion of technology is serving to connect the world in ways that might eliminate nationalism and its stupid conflicts? This here internet thing is a good start.

I (being another U.S. citizen) only partially agree with this.

Well, I for one am not convinced that nationalism is a bad thing. However, that doesn't mean I think everyone that's not an American is stupid. Technology has brought us all closer together. 15 years ago, this exchange would've taken place on a local BBS and the spelling would have been changed, perhaps unnecessarily. Today, none of us really knows where the original poster is posting from until they tell us. Now, instead of attacking each other, we can learn from each other. Except the French of course, they'll just surrender (it's a joke people ).

In case anyone hasn't noticed, the Google ads have changed pretty significantly from all the talk about Germany and Nazis (I'm sure that didn't help).

Sorry Vigo, but you don't get to say things like "You are probably American, and will most probably never set foot on another continent besides your own. And if you do, the first thing you will do is heading to the next McDonald´s, avoiding exposure to too much foreign culture mixing up your precious little brain." and then try to avoid responsibility for what you've said by saying something lame like "sorry if I offended anyone".

You made a gross generalization about Americans, and my response to you was way more polite than it should have been, and yet instead of apologizing, you went on to hurl some more insults at Americans?

I don't assume that all Germans are Nazis, (and I've been to Germany, BTW, and my Grandfather was of German extraction- although he still fought in WWII to defend Europe against the Nazis), and I find it as offensive for you to call Americans "ignorant" as I'm sure you do for someone to refer to Germans as "Nazis".

(Also, yes, you got something "serious wrong". Canadians are NOT referred to as "Americans" they are "Canadians". Mexicans also live in North America, and are referred to as "Mexicans"). Maybe if you had ever set foot in Canada or Mexico you would know that.

It's too damn bad if you don't like George W. Bush - what he has to do with someone correcting your spelling I guess makes sense only in your own brain.

Um, not that Vigo can't defend himself ... but if we are going to communicate over the internet with people all over the world, we'd better get used to the fact that Americans have developed a very, very bad repuation over the past couple of centuries. Recent history isn't helping.

While it's dumb to make vast generalizations, it's also absurd to expect that Americans be held in high regard as a nationality.

wow, my apologies. Didn't bother reading all the posts b/c it sort of exploded.

However, Vigo, I didn't intend to offend you & i apologize. I really just thought the spelling was kind of funny & was more pointing out something funny than trying to insult anyone. Obviously that fell flat, My bad.

I AM american, however i have a tremendous respect for other cultures & have a few that i'm actually quite fascinated by. (I love Godzilla and Kendo & Iaido... you can figure it out). While i haven't used it in years & have probably forgotten almost all of it, I was once mildly fluent in spanish (as in, i could hold a conversation with someone who spoke nothing but spanish, & not resort back to any english) so i do realize how hard it is to learn multiple languages & commend anyone who does so.

As for setting foot in any other countries, I'm a pilot & my career goal is to fly internationally for a major airline. While i'm still a ways from that goal, i have every belief that i will get there & once i do, i'll be fortunate enough to see more of the world than most people ever dream of.

Oh, & i don't care for McDonalds, I'm not fat, & i LOVE learning about foreign cultures (I'd love to live in Japan for a few years, or Italy...).

So, we've both made ignorant remarks, we've both apologized, lets get back to star wars!

Just think of how when we got a DVD player you could finally skip to any scene in the movie, how you didn't have to rewind the movie, how you didn't have to worry about the tape breaking? Now that is all normal, so now we naturally want better quality as we eventually delved into HD-DVD as they eventually becomes mainstream.

The scale of critique keeps going up as technology advances. That's only to be expected, though. As technology advances, LucasArts will undoubtedly keep up with it. So it's not that LucasArts isn't capable of restoring the originals (they are,) but moreso that they chose to wait. The easy and probably best route was to go for the Laser Disc-quality DVD's, which they decided to do.

You have to realize that it would take a considerable amount of time to clean the negatives, and then start restoring them. That takes a *lot* of time.

So the fans didn't have to wait forever, they went ahead with the Laser Discs. It is sort of like being very hungry before dinner, and eating something small to hold yourself over. That is why I believe the original negatives are being restored as we speak. The eventual results will be the actual dinner, and these Laser Disc-quality ones we have right now are just to hold us over.

That's all fine and dandy, but think about it this way: pre-dinner snacks (or appetizers) are generally much less expensive than dinner (or the main course). So why should we have been expected to pay full price for something that was just to tide us over for the real thing?

I sure hope so, I for one am passing on having anything to do with the current "Limited Edition" set that is out right now. Hopefully, the OOT will be HD or Blue Ray when the time comes, if it does.

I REALLY wouldn't count on OOT being released in an all 6 movie set. Thus why I picked the 2006 set up. Knowing Luca$ he'll do with that format as he done with this, wait untill it's about to die, then continue again and again.

That's all fine and dandy, but think about it this way: pre-dinner snacks (or appetizers) are generally much less expensive than dinner (or the main course). So why should we have been expected to pay full price for something that was just to tide us over for the real thing?

I never said LucasFilm was full of altruistic saints. It is only natural that they cash in whenever they can. All corporations do that. Does any fan really expect Lucas to pull back the prices like Wal-Mart? People follow a pattern of behavior, and Lucas' pattern is to take advantage of the market. He is only human.

They started going back to do the SE around 1996, possibly very late 1995. That is my guess. If anyone can correct me on this, that is fine.

Following my theory of what LucasFilm is doing, let's be safe and say that if the original negatives were brought out again sometime early this year of 2006. That is a solid 9+ years that the o-negative has been dormant somewhere. During nine years, many things can happen. More grime can stick itself to the film, (nothing is perfect, even the most safest things get damaged,) and the restored scenes they did for the SE could've been lost inside of the computers. Why not go back and start fresh? That has to be what the plan is.

Lucas mentions the work being done for the SE in at least one of the Leonard Maltin interviews from the '95 Faces set.

Good God, I hope so.
