Are they available separately, or only in the box sets? I don't want to buy an expensive set that contains several films I don't care for ... but I'd sure like to have the Bonds I like on DVD. I currently have only 2 on DVD. I'd certainly like to upgrade all the laserdiscs I have, and maybe add a couple more for the first time.

But the truth is, even as a Bond fan, I think a good many of the movies are pure crap.

Circumstances have kept me from seeing this so far, but it is still my plan to do so.

Meanwhile, CNN is apologizing to Daniel Craig ... it's an interesting world when two industry titans admit mistakes in the same news cycle (the other being that Superman DVD mess).

The first time I saw this one was in a class I took at USC: "James Bond Film". It was an elective for me (I was a biology major), but an upper level core course for my film major friend. Guest lecturers included Michael G. Wilson and Roger Moore. But I digress...

One thing I liked is that I had no familiarity with George Lazenby*, so I didn't see him as GL playing Bond as I do with the others (yep, there's Sean Connery playing James Bond. And now Roger Moore is playing Bond...). No, it was just, "hey that's James Bond." I'm not sure if that makes sense. So it didn't bother me that his ears were so big, or that he didn't seem as polished as the others. I just went along for the ride. And an action-packed one it is. I'm still not too sure about Telly Savalas as Blofeld, though. Anyhow, I like the film and thought it showed a side of Bond only hinted at a few other times.

I tend to like all of the different actors for what they bring to the part. So if I were recommending Bond films to the uninitiated (which I'm not considering you, Gaf), the short list in viewing order would be this:
From Russia With Love
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Spy Who Loved Me
The Living Daylights
(GoldenEye is the only PB Bond I've seen, so I've no opinion on his best.)

*It wasn't until later that I saw him playing John Stamos' father in some strange movie I watched on TV that featured Gene Simmons as a bad guy!

I hated Lazenby as Bond. He was too doofy.

That said, it's a fine 60's Bond film, with one of the better scores by John Barry (so good, it was used for the main credits ... the last Bond film not to feature an actual song over the credits). Terry Savalis is the best Blofeld of the series, and - of course - OHMSS is the one where Bond falls so in love that he actually gets married!

George Lazenby was the shortfall in this film (imo). Too bad. With Connery in the role, it might have been one of the very best. That Connery came back for the one after this is a lamentable irony.

Yeah, I read that Leonard Maltin said that if Connery had been in the role, it might have been the very best Bond film. Still, I plan to rent the movie and form my own opinion.

It was always my least favourite Bond film growing up because it didnt have Connery or Moore in it and found less appealing than the other Bond films, but nowadays I appreciate it alot more and like it alot more than I do some of the siller Bond films especially a few in the Moore era.

It is a good Bond film has a decent enough plot but to me it suffers from having no Connery in it, even though it has a good Blofeld in Tele Savalas and a good Bond girl in Diana Rigg he is definatly missed IMO.

I still dont think Lazenby was a great Bond but he was an OK one but would have liked to have seen him have another go at being Bond just to see what he would have been like in a second film..

As far as I know they're only available via the new box sets.... and the films in the box sets aren't in chronological order (release date wise) either, so they make you buy the shit ones if you want to buy all of the good/decent ones.

Maybe after Christmas they'll get individual releases.... after all the hardcore fans (or their families) have been forced to buy the expensive sets in ridiculous quantities as Christmas presents.

Hmmmm, interesting.

I thought Timothy Dalton improved greatly as Bond for his second go. Perhaps Lazenby would have, too. (But something still would have to be done about those ears.)

So, Stinky. If they're not put in chronological order (why?!), what order are they in?

the new U.E. releases are available in single film releases in pal land, but not the u.s. in ntsc.

Germany, australia, and the u.k. I can confirm have them seperately.

I have seen some people breaking up the sets and selling them on ebay that way in the u.s.

apparently some people are selling the one's they don't like.

If I had to guess I'd say they're put into the order that the publisher thought would maximize sales, that's the only "order" to the title selections included in these box sets.

The mediocre titles are sprinkled evenly over the decent and great ones. If you want all of the ones you're interested in chances are you'll have to buy ALL the sets (until the date when they begin selling them individually, that is.) During Christmas time when DVD sales spike dramatically there will be many Bond fans that'll be strong armed into doing just that just to get what they want (or to give as gifts to family or friends.)

If the box sets had some sensible order fucking shit loads would have bought only certain titles/volumes and left the less popular ones ignored and unpurchased.

Just out of curiosity, do the sets attempt to give each set a relatively even sprinkling of each Bond actor (as hard as that would be considering the uneveness of the amount of time spent in the role by each actor)?

No more Martini.

Grrrrrrrrr.

Well I sure am glad that it's George Lazenby spearheading this cause, because we all know what a fan favorite he has always been.  *snicker*

But on a more serious note, I don't like this product placement decision at all.

Why can't he have two drinks in the story line, and they could work the beer into the story in some way as not to damage the developed and well loved cultured integrity of this iconic character?

this is ridiculous.  BOND DOES NOT DRINK HEINKENS!!   He drinks Vodka Martinis shaken not stirred, Dom Perignon,  Bollinger, and rarely Taittinger!   We need to send Oddjob and Jaws after the morons that made this decision.  This is worse than having Bond say "do I look like I a give crap", when asked whether he wanted his Martini shaken or stirred.    Serious,  are they intentionally trying to piss the old time Bond fans?

^Agreed.

I've had mixed feelings about Craig's Bond ever since his debut in Casino Royale, but this is really a bridge too far. Why not just make James Bond a blond American FBI agent while they're at it?

How about they tie Bond and his woman together and keep dunking them in a huge keg of Heinken? On second thought, it's a bit too Batman.

Think back to Tomorrow Never Dies, Heineken had a big product placement deal with the film, and all it led to was promo tie ins and a bunch of broken cans in the motorcycle chase (Ala the Perrier cans in Goldeneye's tank chase). It's not really a big thing, and if you look at it-very few Bond films actually feature the martini or Bond ordering one. And it's not like they're doing traditions any longer.

That trailer is damn depressing. Because it looks and feels completely awful.

If they'd just admit that he's 005 I'd be perfectly fine. This new character is really some ex-SAS thug who gets promoted to being one of the other two 00 agents.

Didn't the 1967 Casino Royale put forth the idea that many people have assumed the mantle of Bond over the decades? He's the Dread Pirate Roberts of the spy world. ;)
