Question about Outtake/Unused Star Wars Music...

Whilst I was playing some Lego Star Wars II on the "Escape From Echo Base" level there was this really interesting piece of music that I thought actually worked really well. I didn't really recognize the track from anywhere in the film, however it obviously had the Star Wars feel and the similar themes running throughout the track. I actually began listening to the "Empire" soundtrack to find it but with no luck I decided it probably was an outtake.

I have the 1993 Star Wars Original Soundtrack Anthology Box Set so I popped in the "Outtakes/Previously Unreleased" disc and found that the song in question is called "Drawing The Battle Lines/Leia's Instructions". Anyways my question is, has Lucas bothered to re-release this material to the public? Is the 1993 Anthology Set the only way to get ahold of some of these extra tracks? Has some of it worked it's way into "newer" editions of the Original Trilogy soundtracks? Just curious to see if anyone knows. Thanks again! Alot of these "extra" songs have been used in other Star Wars games over time.

The 2-disc editions of the soundtracks (released by RCA in 1997 and then by Sony a few years later) have most of the music from the anthology (except for the music that was deleted from the SEs- like Lapti Nek and the Ewok Song) plus some music that wasn't included in the anthology.

BTW- your signature pic is WAAAAAAAY too big- it stretches out the page horizonally making it difficult to read your post.

It was probably included in a bigger piece of music. I've got a PDF document that lists the stuff on the 1993 set that's not on the 2004 set and it's not listed.

I'm pretty sure its on the 1997 SE 2-disk set. ESB had a lot of really good music cues that were wisely taken out of the film by Irvin Kershner after being scored because he felt that the dramatic tension worked best without them. The probe droids entrance at the opening had a more bombastic cue, there was music during the imperial walkers first being spotted, music during Luke and Vaders final duel and music during some of the dagobah scenes. I am guessing it is from one of these cues. The music is actually very well done, and the scenes still play well with the music in them, just in a different way from what Kershner got in the final film with a silent background.

Building Empire inserted some of the missing cues... very interesting to check out if you get the chance.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

The original German dub of Star Wars uses addtional music in the trash compactor sequence.

That's a great track. Certainly one of my favourite off that 4th disc in the Anthology set. However, from what I remember (off the top of my head), it is a previously unreleased track, rather than and unsed track.

Yeah, do checkout 'Building Empire', I had fun trying to sync those unused tracks. At best I think they give a great impression of the impact that music (or the lack of it) can have on a scene.

Some of the unused music (such as the expanded Trash Compactor cue and the expanded Jawa introduction cue) were actually on the original Star Wars soundtrack LP released in 1977.

I always find the unused music to be facinating. I just love the alternate piece of music that was done for the twin sunset scene- has anyone (for fun) ever substituted that music for the music used in the film?

I think Invader Jenny has said she's done that. I keep on meaning to, but I haven't done it yet.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

LOL! I keep meaning to as well (I've wanted to do that since I first got the CDs). It would be easy enough to just cue up the DVD and the CD, and turn down the sound from the DVD, to just get a sense of how the scene would play with the alternate music.

Unfortunately, I don't have the correct gear to make my own DVD dub with the alternate music added.

Jenny even gave me the timer information to sync the two up exactly, but where that thread is, I honestly don't remember, and I could slap myself for not keeping track of it.
